You reach Bürgenstock Hotel the old way: by boat across Lake Lucerne, then on the funicular that has climbed here since 1888. At the top waits an infinity pool at 35°C, with the lake far below its edge.
Bürgenstock suits a stay built around the Alpine Spa, with 10,000 m² of wellness spaces and rooms in 2 wings. For an intimate chalet stay, I would choose a smaller house.
Co-founder & CEOMarco Di CesareHe spent weeks comparing hotels and kept finding that the detail deciding the trip was missing from the hotel website. 10 years in marketing technology, 2 of them building with AI.About MarcoHow we write the guideLinkedIn
At the Bürgenstock the lake does the first stretch of the journey. You step off the boat at Kehrsiten, board a funicular that has climbed the ridge since 1888, and up top the water you have just crossed reappears 500 metres below the warm pool. For the night, choose between the old Palace, now The Heritage, and the Contemporary wing of glass and stone: 2 very different houses facing the same view.
Everything here turns on the Alpine Spa: 10,000 m², 5 pools, 4 saunas, a hammam, 13 treatment rooms and a gym that never closes, day or night. The outdoor infinity pool is held at 35 °C and lines up the lake, Pilatus and the Rigi in front of you; in summer the Hollywood Pool opens in the garden too. For meals there are 12 restaurants, lounges and bars: Spices, pan-Asian with 16 Gault&Millau points and glass walls over the lake, which also does breakfast; the Oak Grill, cooking over wood; Parisa, which is Persian; and the Lakeview Bar for afternoon tea.
Guests give it 9.5 out of 10 on Booking.com and 4.5 out of 5 on Tripadvisor, and the MICHELIN Guide gives it 3 Keys. 2 things are worth knowing before you book. The Contemporary’s windows do not open, while the Heritage has balconies and costs less. And the spa is no secret: day visitors buy timed tickets, and weekend crowds and tour groups keep turning up in the reviews.
Before writing a line about the Bürgenstock, we went to YouTube: of the 32 videos our search turned up, 26 are really about this resort, and 6 clips by 4 makers made it onto this page. We read 45 pages of the official site and the scores on 3 travel sites, then collected the 120 reviews left on the Alpine Spa’s Google listing, 79 of them with text. There the surprise was waiting: 7 give the same name, a spa attendant’s, and always to praise him, from November 2022 to March 2026, in English and in French.
One Lume
Lumina Guide 2027
Gives more than the other hotels of its place and price range.
You reach Bürgenstock Hotel by boat and on the funicular that has climbed here since 1888; at the top are the 10,000 m² of the Alpine Spa and an infinity pool at 35°C, with Lake Lucerne beyond its edge.
We found 2 houses facing one view, the old Palace with its balconies and a glass wing with double-sided fireplaces, and 12 restaurants and bars: Spices holds 16 Gault&Millau points, the Oak Grill cooks over wood.
Our reading, point by point
What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.
Location
A car-free ridge above the lake: Lucerne is 25 minutes away by boat, plus the funicular, and you walk everywhere in the resort.
Character
A resort from 1873, with its 1888 funicular and a lift clinging to the rock, rebuilt with a glass wing beside the old Palace.
Rooms
211 rooms in 2 wings, from the 33 m² Heritage Alpine Deluxe to the 308 m² Royal Suite; in the Contemporary the windows do not open.
Food and social life
12 restaurants and bars, 3 of them rated by Gault&Millau: Spices 16 points, the Oak Grill 14, Parisa 13.
Wellness
A 10,000 m² spa: 5 pools, the 35 °C infinity pool over the lake among them, 4 saunas and 13 treatment rooms.
The stay as a whole
For 2 or 3 days of spa above a lake it is the most complete choice; in the packages read on 27 September 2026 a room starts at CHF 974 a night, and at weekends the spa fills up.
What makes it rare
A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.
What do Bürgenstock’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
Location
Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Arriving by boat and funicular, you look out over the lake, and the view never palls; unless fog wipes it out.
Room
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Of the rooms, guests describe the view over the lake, from the bath as well, and in the Contemporary the fireplace lit in the evening.
Staff and service
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The spa perched above the lake is what guests write about most: the infinity pool and the saunas looking out over the water; at table the name that recurs most is Spices, with its open kitchen.
Breakfast
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is at Spices, with its windows on the lake and its terrace: guests praise the buffet, the dishes ordered from the menu and the waiters, often thanked by name.
Price
Those with no regrets about the spend credit the view over the lake. When money comes up, 3 things recur: parking, coffee, the funicular.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 29 December 2024 to 30 September 2026. These are the reviews on the Google listing of the whole Bürgenstock Resort, which also includes the other hotels on the ridge. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay on Lake Lucerne: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against on Lake Lucerne:
Park Hotel Vitznau
Hotel Villa Honegg
Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern
Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern
Hotel Vitznauerhof
Price: for two on the night of 5 December 2026, from €812 (seen on Google Hotels on 28 September 2026).

What to expect
From the pool above the lake to the Kids Club: a 10,000 m² spa, 12 restaurants and bars, and a story that begins in 1873.
The Alpine Spa
5 pools, from balmy to bracing: the 35 °C outdoor infinity pool, the indoor pool with glass walls over the lake, the Hollywood Pool in summer, a saline pool for floating and an eco pool of lake water at 10–14 °C for the brave. Then 4 saunas and a hammam.
Spices and the other restaurants
At Spices, pan-Asian with 16 Gault&Millau points, the kitchen is open to the room, and breakfast is served here too. The Oak Grill cooks over a wood fire, Parisa brings Persia to the ridge, and Verbena, at the Waldhotel, opened on 20 March 2026.
Since 1873
The resort was born in 1873 and the funicular from the lake followed in 1888. The Hammetschwand Lift, open to the air on the rock face, still climbs 153 metres in a minute, with the lake beneath your feet.
The Kids Club
For ages 3 to 12, every day from 10am to 7pm, with a pink-battlemented play castle and toy cows. In the spa, under-16s may use the pools from 9am to noon and from 5pm to 7pm.
Good to know before you book
The 2 wings differ: in the Contemporary the glass runs floor to ceiling but the windows do not open; the Heritage, the old Palace, has balconies and costs less. Source: burgenstockresort.com
The Alpine Spa also sells timed tickets to day visitors, from CHF 220, and weekend slots sell out fast: for a quieter spa, choose a weekday. Source: burgenstockresort.com
The wing you choose shapes the stay. In the Contemporary the glass runs floor to ceiling and the fireplace is double-sided, but the windows do not open: the lake air stays outside. The Heritage, the old Palace, has balconies and costs less.
The Alpine Spa is included only for guests of the Bürgenstock Hotel; at the Waldhotel you use the Waldhotel’s own spa. And on third-party sites the spa can drop out of the price: Hotels.com sells a room «with Spa Access» separately, a sign that some rates leave it out.
From 9am to noon and from 5pm to 7pm the spa belongs to families and phone cameras; the rest of the day it falls quiet. The saunas, steam baths and gym are for ages 16 and over.
Dogs are welcome only in some room categories, for CHF 60 a night, to be agreed with the resort when you book. They may not enter Spices or RitzCoffier.
The finest way up is boat and funicular; there are the train and the car too, with driving times measured on the roads without traffic.
From Lucerne
The resort’s boat leaves the Bahnhofquai, 5 minutes from the station, every hour at 7 minutes past: 25 minutes on the lake to Kehrsiten, then the funicular; 41 minutes in all from the station, on the timetable for Tuesday 13 October 2026. For hotel guests the boat and the funicular are free, and the booking confirmation is the ticket; for everyone else CHF 90 return. By car it is 17.7 km, 28 minutes without traffic.
From Zurich
From the main station 1 hour 34 minutes, by train to Lucerne and then the boat and the funicular; from the airport 1 hour 52 minutes or 2 hours 2 minutes, on the Swiss timetable. By car from the airport it is 84 km, 1 hour 14 minutes without traffic; the resort says 60 minutes by limousine.
By train and bus
Without the boat: the train from Lucerne to Stansstad and bus 321 up to the resort, about 43 minutes.
By car
The resort has an underground garage with EV charging and valet parking. The overnight price is not published: the resort says it depends on the booking, the MICHELIN Guide lists CHF 40 a day at the Waldhotel, while Google and Booking.com show it as free.
Driving and walking times measured on 28 September 2026 with OSRM and Valhalla on OpenStreetMap roads, without traffic; train and boat times for Tuesday 13 October 2026; every source read on 27 and 28 September 2026.
Beyond the hotel
On the ridge, a path cut into the rock and Europe’s highest outdoor lift; Pilatus straight ahead, Lucerne across the water, and the funicular dropping down to Kehrsiten.
Reached along the Felsenweg, the path cut into the rock, 23 minutes on foot from the hotel; then 153 metres in a minute, up to 1,132 metres. It runs daily from 9.30am to 6pm, weather permitting.
The Kapellbrücke and the old town lie across the water: the resort’s boat crosses in 25 minutes, leaving the Bahnhofquai, 5 minutes from the station, at 7 minutes past every hour.
The mountain facing you from the infinity pool. At the summit, Pilatus Kulm, there is a hotel and the top station of the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad.
Since 1888 it has carried people 500 metres up from the Kehrsiten pier to the resort. For hotel guests the boat and funicular are included; everyone else pays CHF 90 return.

Bürgenstock Hotel reviews
Platform scores, the MICHELIN Guide’s 3 Keys and the spa as told by the people who have used it.
A wonderful stay, attentive staff and a magnificent setting. The one flaw: the birthday flowers had been forgotten, and she had to ring 3 times for the chocolates.
One star, and only for the staff: the hotel is overrun, with coaches at the door, the lobby feels like an airport lounge and the pools are smaller than in the pictures.
The spa looks over Lake Lucerne, there are towels everywhere and everything is spotless; among the restaurants is the grill, where you can eat in your bathrobe.
As a day visitor: CHF 210 for 4 hours is a lot, and in the relaxation area, looking closely, the ceiling was dripping. At these prices he expected more.
What to know before you board the funicular, read across every source on 27 and 28 September 2026.

There are 12 restaurants, lounges and bars in all: Spices, pan-Asian, 16 Gault&Millau points, lunch and dinner every day; the Oak Grill & Pool Patio, 14 points; Parisa, Persian, 13 points, dinner Thursday to Monday; Verbena at the Waldhotel, opened on 20 March 2026; the Restaurant Taverne, Swiss; and the Lakeview Bar, open until midnight. The resort asks guests to book. The MICHELIN Guide describes Verbena as international cooking from the Middle East to France: that was the previous concept.
Are dogs allowed?

On 25 September the resort published on Issuu the menus for 31 December 2026 at the Oak Grill, Verbena, Parisa and Spices, with a vegetarian menu too at the Oak Grill, Verbena and Spices, and fondue chinoise at the Restaurant Taverne; the resort’s own New Year’s Eve page, on 27 September 2026, still said «To Be Confirmed». No prices are printed. In 2025 there was a party in the Lakeview Ballroom from 10pm to 3am, free for guests with a dinner booking and CHF 150 for outside guests.
