For a few days between forest and mountains, I would head up to AlpenGold on the slope above Lake Davos. If you want to walk from place to place in town every evening, I would stay closer to the centre.

Is it for you?

For 2, I like the Alpine Suite, with separate bedroom, dressing room and living room for an evening in.

I’d ask for
The Couple Harmony treatment in a Spa Suite: 160 minutes per couple, CHF 560.
Worth knowing
The treatment includes one hour in the Spa Suite; an additional hour costs CHF 120.
The Alpine Suite bedroom with its bed, lamps and purple armchairs

Like a regular

The golden roof and curved windows in front of the lake
  1. Hire skis in the lobby

For skis, I would start at Angerer on the lobby level. Snowboards and cross-country equipment can be hired here too, before heading out to the slopes.

  2. Before the hotel

Behind this building lies the history of the Basel Sanatorium, which occupied the site before the hotel. The old high-altitude clinic was demolished in 2007.

  3. A late workout

If you prefer to exercise after everyone else has finished for the day, the gym is accessible 24 hours a day. Equipment is reserved for ages 16 and above.

What AlpenGold is

AlpenGold is a 216-room-and-suite hotel, opened in December 2013. It was called InterContinental Davos until spring 2021; Michel Reybier Hospitality has managed it since that May. Its oval form resembles a pine cone, while the façade comprises 791 different wave-shaped elements. Inside, timber and natural stone accompany furniture with simple lines.1

Lumina Guide 2027

We choose the hotels of this guide ourselves, one at a time: no one pays to be in it.

How we choose the hotels

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do AlpenGold Hotel’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest appreciates being close to Lake Davos. Another finds the hotel a little outside town and awkward for spontaneous walks into the centre, despite the shuttle.

  2. Room

6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest remembers a spacious room and a very large bathroom. Another is comfortable inside but would like a more inviting balcony than its iron table and chairs.

  3. Staff and service

One guest finds the staff attentive and friendly. Another reports marks on the bedroom floor and says they remain after housekeeping has visited.

  4. Breakfast

7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest remembers waffles, muesli and cheeses. Another finds plenty of choice but is less impressed by breakfast than expected.

  5. Price

One guest considers the stay good value for a luxury resort. Another finds the price high and the extra breakfast charge unconvincing.

143 guests said so on Google, from 30 November 2024 to 10 October 2026. Includes meals and other visits without overnight stays, as well as booking experiences. The other hotels are assessed on the same 5 themes. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Davos:

  • Grandhotel Belvédère, Davos
  • Hotel Flüela Davos - The Unbound Collection by Hyatt

Price: for 2, the night of 22 August 2027, from 262 CHF on Google Hotels on 3 November 2026.

What a night costs, period by period

For Davos in summer, I would look at late June: the starting price is lower than over Christmas and New Year.

Where to linger

The green atelier VERT dining room, with glass lamps and laid tables

A vegetarian dinner

I would go to atelier VERT for its menu of Alpine and regional produce, among green walls and glass lamps. The kitchen works with Graubünden producers; in winter, dinner runs Thursday–Saturday, 6pm–10pm, with last orders at 8.30pm.1

The indoor pool in front of loungers and windows

Inside Nescens

The spa covers 1,200 m² and has 14 treatment rooms. Separate men’s and women’s wellness areas each have a sauna and steam room, alongside a shared sauna and sanarium. Between stops, I would settle on a lounger beside the windows.1

Getting here

AddressBaslerstrasse 9, 7260 Davos Dorf

By train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the journey takes around 2 hours 15 minutes with a change at Landquart. Davos Dorf is the nearest station: give the concierge your arrival time to arrange a transfer. The estimated drive from Zurich Airport is around 110 minutes.1 A guest writing on 6 July 2026 describes the hotel’s location as quiet, saying the windows could be left open at night.2

A day at AlpenGold

In the morning

Choosing a massage

Among the Nescens massages, I would book De-stressing, combining pressure and stretching: 50 minutes cost CHF 180, or 80 minutes CHF 250. I would arrive at the spa 15 minutes before the appointment.

At lunch

The Nuts & Co burger

At Nuts & Co, I would order the AlpenGold burger with its house-made sauces.

In the afternoon

Visiting the sauna

The sauna is used without swimwear, sitting on a towel. It is the only textile-free area of the spa.

At dinner

Sapori’s open kitchen

For an Italian dinner, I would stop at Sapori, with its open kitchen and homemade tagliatelle. During the winter season it opens every evening, 6pm–10pm, with last orders at 9.30pm.

After dinner

An evening at Le Fumoir

For cigar smokers, Le Fumoir offers Cuban labels, including some rare Cohibas, alongside other Latin American origins. Spirits and brandies are available to accompany a cigar.

An early departure

A guest leaves one day early after cleaning problems and a shower that still drains badly. At check-out, a staff member listens and removes the dinner drinks from the bill, a gesture appreciated even though the guest would not return.
