Amanjiwo suits a few days of Javanese culture, with an anthropologist’s talks and temple excursions; the lowest seller on Google showed nights for 2 from IDR 23,824,384 in November. For a city break centred on Yogyakarta, I would stay in the city instead.

Like a regular

A stupa of Borobudur at dawn above the mist of the Kedu valley
  1. A pool of your own

For a private swim, I would ask for the Borobudur Pool Pavilion: its 6-metre pool sits beside a thatched balé and daybed, with a walled garden for time outdoors.

  2. November at its lowest

The 3–5 November 2026 run showed IDR 23,824,384 a night on 13 October 2026. The dearest night shown was 4 August 2027, at IDR 44,431,360; I would start with November if dates are flexible.

  3. Tax on restaurant bills

At the Restaurant & Bar, menu prices carry 21% government tax and service charge. I would budget for that addition to lunch and dinner, while keeping the included daily breakfast separate.

  4. Reserve the village shuttle

Book the complimentary shuttle ahead for trips around Borobudur: it runs from 7am to 5pm and provides drop-off and pick-up only. For an earlier outing, I would arrange the journey separately.

What Amanjiwo is

Amanjiwo, «peaceful soul», opened in 1997 to a design by the late Ed Tuttle (Travel Curator), and it borrows Borobudur’s stone, domes and terraces: a rotunda at the top of the hill, 2 crescents of pavilions below it, the pool at the bottom (Aman). On 1 October 2026 the MICHELIN Guide listed it with 3 Keys, «an extraordinary stay» in its words, and a guest score of 19.5 out of 20.

Every pavilion measures 243 m², with a 4-pillar king bed on a terrazzo platform, a walled garden with a thatched balé and a sunken bath outdoors; the choice is between the view, Borobudur and the valley or the Menoreh Hills, and a private 6-metre pool. Aman’s fact sheet of January 2025 counts 33 suites, 32 pavilions and the Dalem Jiwo villa of 1,200 m²; the current site adds 2 Menoreh categories the fact sheet does not have, and the celebrations page speaks of 31 pavilions for a buyout. The 36 suites some booking sites give are wrong.

The rate includes the car from Yogyakarta International Airport and back, breakfast for 2, afternoon tea, yoga on alternate days, the shuttle around Borobudur and the anthropologist’s lectures (accommodation); lunch, dinner, treatments and excursions are extra, with 21% tax and service on the menus. On Google Hotels, on 1 October 2026, the cheapest night was IDR 23,911,424 (19 October) and the dearest IDR 61,706,240 (11 August 2027).

We read the 500 most recent Google reviews with text, written between February 2020 and 1 October 2026, out of the 1,559 on the listing. Borobudur comes up in 80 of them, averaging 4.9 stars. Those who stayed write about the view down the valley, the pavilions with their walled garden and outdoor bath, and a staff who remember names and habits.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

  • True quiet

    The first of the guide

Here: each pavilion sits inside its own walled garden, on a slope above the rice fields of Central Java; the country around is rural and silent.

195 of the 198 guests who write about the quiet are pleased. 14 hotels of 335 hold it.

  4. Breakfast

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast, included in the rate for 2, is served from 7am on the restaurant terrace, with Borobudur at the end of the valley.

  5. Price

5 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. Guests who are happy with it write that it was worth the money; the rate covers the car from Yogyakarta airport, breakfast for 2 and afternoon tea.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 6 February 2020 to 1 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay near Borobudur: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 1 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

How much is a night at Amanjiwo?

On Google Hotels, read on 1 October 2026 for 2 adults, the cheapest night was IDR 23,911,424 (19 October and 2 November 2026, 1 March 2027), about €1,177 at the ECB rate of 30 September, and the dearest IDR 61,706,240 on 11 August 2027. Other nights: IDR 41,302,016 on 30 October, IDR 35,866,624 on 16 November, IDR 32,607,232 on 24 December and IDR 30,433,280 on 31 December 2026, IDR 36,954,112 on 1 January 2027, IDR 44,384,256 on 4 May 2027.

From October to June the typical night is about IDR 27.1 to 27.2 million; July and August 2027 are the dearest months, with a typical night of IDR 35.7 million. Prices for September and October 2027 were not yet shown.

The calendar shows the cheapest category free that night. For 14 to 17 October 2026 the hotel’s own offer priced the Garden Pavilion at IDR 30,118,946 a night and the Dalem Jiwo villa at IDR 117,572,760. Aman’s own rate list, read on 11 October 2026, prints its dollar prices as including taxes and fees; Tripadvisor showed USD 2,037 for 11 October, taxes not included.

What does the rate include?

Every stay includes the car from Yogyakarta International Airport and back, breakfast for 2 guests per suite, afternoon tea with Indonesian cakes, yoga on alternate mornings, in-room refreshments and soft drinks, the shuttle around the Borobudur area (booked ahead, 7am to 5pm, drop-off and pick-up only) and the resident anthropologist’s lectures (accommodation). The fact sheet adds the gym, the tennis court and bicycles. The villa adds a meet-and-greet at the airport, a butler and a car of its own (Dalem Jiwo).

Lunch, dinner, treatments and excursions appear on none of these lists. Aman’s menus, wedding prices and extra-adult fee add 21% government tax and service; no resort fee was found.

Is there half board or an all-inclusive plan?

No: breakfast is included, and lunch and dinner are paid at menu prices, plus 21%. Meals come only in some offers, such as the train journey from Jakarta, with every meal on board (offers).

How do you get there from Yogyakarta airport, and is the transfer included?

Yes, it is included both ways for every stay, in a car with Wi-Fi and drinks; a VIP transfer can be arranged on request (getting here). Aman puts the drive at 90 minutes; OpenStreetMap routing gives 61 km and 59 minutes without traffic, MICHELIN 75 minutes, and a guest in January 2026 took about an hour and a half. YIA has direct flights from Jakarta, Bali, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Solo airport is 2 to 2.5 hours away; Adisutjipto, Yogyakarta’s old airport, about 50 km.

How far is Borobudur, and can you watch the sunrise from the temple?

Borobudur is 3.5 km by road, 9 minutes by car and 20 by bicycle on OpenStreetMap, 2.65 km as the crow flies; Aman speaks of a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute ride, and the Google listing’s «4 km» rounds it up. The resort’s shuttle drops you in the area for free between 7am and 5pm.

The sunrise visit arranged by Amanjiwo includes the transfers, sunrise access, an entrance with a shorter walk and a certified guide. MICHELIN and an older Tablet text say only hotel guests can be there at dawn: that is no longer true, as the operator also sells a public sunrise ticket with breakfast, limited to 100 people a day (InJourney).

Can you still climb Borobudur, and what are the rules?

Yes, with limits. On 23 September 2026 Kompas, quoting the heritage office, reported that the main stupa is under restoration: ordinary and pilgrim visits reach level 8, sunrise and sunset visits level 9, and the north courtyard is closed; access may change. Climbing needs a ticket, a guide and Upanat sandals, according to a tour operator.

The 1,200 climbers a day still quoted by some blogs was a 2024 rule: the quota rose in 2025, to 4,000 a day reported in November (VOI), with 400 to 450 per time slot over the 2025-26 holidays. The foreign ticket price of IDR 455,000 and the Monday closure on an unofficial site are not confirmed by the operator or by any news report we read.

Which pavilions have a private pool?

The Garden Pool, Borobudur Pool and Menoreh Pool pavilions, all 243 m², each with a 6-metre pool; the Garden, Borobudur and Menoreh pavilions have the sunken outdoor bath but no pool (accommodation). The Dalem Jiwo villa has a 15-metre Javanese stone pool. The 2025 fact sheet counted 14 pool pavilions, 7 Garden Pool and 7 Borobudur Pool; how the Menoreh pavilions split them is not published.

What kind of hotel is it, and how many suites does it have?

An Aman resort, opened in 1997 and designed by the late Ed Tuttle (Travel Curator), on a hillside at Majaksingi facing Borobudur. The January 2025 fact sheet counts 33 suites: 8 Garden, 7 Garden Pool, 10 Borobudur and 7 Borobudur Pool pavilions, plus the Dalem Jiwo villa; the site now lists 2 Menoreh categories as well, and the celebrations page counts 31 pavilions for a buyout. Private Upgrades and other sites give 36 suites: that figure appears in no official source.

Aman publishes no star rating: Google shows 4 stars, Agoda 5, Tripadvisor 4. The MICHELIN Guide gives it 3 Keys. 4 privately owned villas on the hill are sold as Aman Residences. No renovation date is published.

What are the restaurants like?

The Restaurant & Bar, under the rotunda and on its terrace facing Borobudur, serves Indonesian and international cooking from 7am to 11pm for hotel guests (11am to 9pm for outside visitors), with Makan Malam, a tasting dinner that changes every day, and the gamelan from 7pm to 10pm. The Pool Terrace, guests only, serves light lunches, smoothie bowls and snacks from 7am to 5pm. The Joglo Sawah holds cooking classes and a 7-course Chef’s Table for 8.

Outside the restaurants there is a Ramayana dance dinner, a wayang shadow-puppet dinner, sunset martinis in the rice fields, a picnic by the Progo river and dinner in a village house beside Pawon temple (dining). Dish prices are in thousands of rupiah, plus 21%. In the reviews guests write of the cooking, Indonesian and international dishes alike, and of breakfast.

What is the spa like?

A small treatment spa: one spa suite with a double room, an outdoor relaxation balé, a gym suite, private yoga and the 40-metre pool (wellness). The facilities list no sauna, steam room or hydrotherapy. Treatments use Aman’s natural skincare and local ingredients: the Javanese Royal Ritual (150 minutes), Mandi Lulur and Lulur Hitam (120 minutes each), Aman’s Grounding, Purifying and Nourishing massages of 60 or 90 minutes, traditional Javanese massage and the Aman Advanced Facial. There is also archery, Jemparingan, the seated Javanese style.

Is the spa included, and can outside guests book it?

Treatments are paid one by one, with local tax and service on top according to the spa menu, whose text does not carry the prices; the standard rate includes no spa credit, only the gym and yoga on alternate days. No day pass and no spa access for non-residents is published: only the restaurants are open to outside visitors. Spa and gym are for guests aged 12 and over.

What are the spa and gym hours?

The spa is open every day from 9am to 9pm, the last treatment at 7:30pm, and the gym round the clock (spa menu). Booking ahead is advised; a treatment booked after hours costs 50% more, and cancelling later than 4 hours before, or 24 hours for wellness activities, costs 50%. In April 2026 one guest noted that the gym is a private suite booked by the hour.

What is the pool like, and is it heated?

An outdoor freshwater pool 40 metres long and 2 metres deep, lined in green natural stone, with an infinity edge towards the rice paddies and banyan trees (fact sheet); the Pool Terrace beside it is for guests only. No source gives its temperature or says whether it is heated; Java’s climate keeps it in use all year, and a 2023 article says it is open 24 hours. The pool pavilions have their own 6-metre pools, the villa one of 15 metres.

When is the best time to go? Is it open all year?

No closing season is published: Google had prices for 302 of 383 nights from October 2026 to August 2027, and the offers run to March 2028. The dry season runs from about May to October; the rains, from November to April, are heaviest from December to February and often come as afternoon storms, so the sunrise visit still works. Magelang averages 21.1 rainy days in January and 4.1 in August (WeatherSpark). July and August 2027 are the dearest months on Google. Check-in is at 2pm, check-out at noon.

Is it good for children?

Aman publishes no children’s policy on its site. Tablet Hotels gives a maximum of 3 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children, per suite; up to 2 children of 11 or under stay free in their parents’ suite, from 12 they count as adults, and an extra adult costs USD 180 plus tax (USD 217.80). Spa and gym start at 12. The festive programme has afternoon activities for children from 5 to 12, Tripadvisor lists babysitting, and a family in April 2026 praised a children’s room. Pavilions, restaurant and pool are linked by staircases, which are hard work with a pushchair.

Can you get married at Amanjiwo?

Yes. According to the celebrations page, the Dalem Jiwo villa takes weddings of up to 40 guests, the Pool Terrace seats 200 for dinner and holds 300 standing, the restaurant seats 90; a buyout of the 31 pavilions sleeps up to 130 and is not available in July or August. The site prints no prices.

The hotel’s own Bridestory listings for 2025-2026 show a 2-night buyout from IDR 1.5 billion plus 21% (30 or 33 suites, IDR 350 million of food and drink, up to 250 guests) and an intimate package for 30 in the villa from IDR 620 million, now marked unavailable. A wedding directory quotes IDR 783 million for up to 200 guests; the 250 and 200 do not match the official 130.

What happens on New Year’s Eve?

In 2026 the evening moves to Borobudur. According to the festive brochure, guests leave by andong, the horse-drawn carriage, at 7:15pm for a cocktail reception, a lighting ritual and a feast of Javanese dishes with performances, then letters of wishes, a water blessing and monks’ chants before the gong at midnight; on 1 January at 8:30am a ruwatan purification follows on the riverbank. There is a Christmas Eve dinner and a daily programme from 22 December to 3 January. No price is published.

What offers are there?

6, none with a published price (exclusive offers): Cultural Trails in Java, 3 nights with breakfast, transfers and 3 activities, until 31 March 2028; Extend Your Stay, a fourth night free when you book 3, non-refundable and not changeable, until 31 March 2028; the Grounding Spiritual Journey, 3 nights of daily treatments and Javanese rituals, until 31 December 2026; Journey through Java by Train, 3 nights on select dates until 21 December 2026; Temple and Reef, 6 nights with Amanwana on Moyo, until 31 March 2027; and Discover Indonesia, 6 nights or more with Amandari and Amankila on Bali, until 31 March 2028.

What else is there to do at the resort?

A floodlit hard tennis court with a hitting partner on request, free bicycles (no e-bikes), lessons in Jemparingan archery, yoga, a library with board games including Javanese congklak, a boutique, and lectures by the resident anthropologist (fact sheet, wellness). Away from the hill, the hotel organises temple visits with its guides, Kotagede’s silversmiths and the Kraton in Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta). There is no golf course and no golf package.

Is the Wi-Fi free? Do you need cash, and should you tip?

Wi-Fi is free in every suite and in the public areas, and in the hotel’s cars. The Google listing says the hotel takes credit cards and cash; the currency is the rupiah. With 21% service already on the bills, a further tip is optional, and outside Bali tipping is not expected (Hootling); Aman publishes no tipping guidance.

Is there parking?

Google lists parking among the hotel’s amenities and Tripadvisor free parking; a Trivago page adds accessible spaces. Aman’s pages do not mention it, because almost everyone arrives in the hotel’s car from the airport.

Can you bring a dog?

No: the Google listing marks pets as not allowed, and Trivago says the same. We found no statement from Aman.

Is there a beach or the sea nearby?

No: Amanjiwo is inland, on the Kedu plain below the Menoreh Hills, with no sea or lake. For the sea, Aman’s Temple and Reef offer adds Amanwana, on Moyo island, reached by air (offers).

Where exactly is it, and is it quiet?

At Ds. Majaksingi, Borobudur, Magelang, Central Java 56553, on a hillside above the rice fields (contact); Yogyakarta is under an hour by car, Aman says. The area is rural and quiet. A 2023 article notes the call to prayer from a nearby mosque every few hours. Mount Merapi stands on the horizon, about 29 km away as the crow flies.
