San Ysidro Ranch suits couples, with or without a dog, who want a few slow days in a garden cottage with every meal included, from $3,095 for one night taken alone, before tax, from December 2026: the lowest price any seller showed on Google. Anyone who wants the sea outside the door will be happier elsewhere, since Miramar Beach is 8 minutes away by car.

Like a regular

The ranch gardens with rose arches, a cart filled with flowers and the Santa Ynez Mountains behind.
  1. The cottage to request

I would ask for Tangerine: 125 m² above the gardens and citrus grove, with Pacific Ocean and Channel Island views, a private gated terrace, a stone fireplace and a patio with a sunken hot tub.

  2. The dates that cost less

Read on 13 October 2026, one night taken alone cost $3,095 on 15–17 December and 4–6 January 2027. Booked as 7 nights together from 16 November, the lowest seller asked $4,530 a night; the same nights taken alone, $3,095 to $3,295.

  3. What comes on top

Parking and resort fees are in the room rate, and taxes are the only item added. A dog adds a one-time pet fee of $250 per stay, and every cottage takes pets.

  4. The trails and the bikes

The Ranch has its own 17 miles of hiking trails and rents bicycles for exploring it at your own pace; for anything beyond the trails, a car is needed.

What San Ysidro Ranch is

San Ysidro Ranch covers 550 acres, about 220 hectares, in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains above Montecito, with the Pacific and the Channel Islands below. Franciscan monks named the land in the late 1700s; the Old Adobe dates from 1825, the sandstone packing house of the citrus ranch from 1889, and the first guests arrived in 1893. The Kennedys spent their honeymoon here in 1953. The hotel signs itself «A Ty Warner Property».

You come for the cottage and the garden round it. There are 38, from 72 to 557 m², all with a fireplace, a canopy bed, an outdoor shower and a patio; the car is parked beside the gate. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at Stonehouse, or brought to the cottage, are part of every rate, and so is the evening at the Speakeasy apart from what you drink. The World’s 50 Best Hotels placed the Ranch 22nd in the world and first in the United States in 2026, and the MICHELIN Guide gives it one Key.

It is among the most expensive stays in California. Google Hotels showed $3,095 to $9,995 a night for 2 before taxes, which added about 16% on the night we could check. The rate buys the cottage, its garden and the table. There is one outdoor pool, the spa’s pages show no sauna, and anyone who wants the sea outside the door will be happier elsewhere, since Miramar Beach is 8 minutes away by car. Weddings are held in the gardens, for up to 100 guests.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

San Ysidro Ranch has been a hotel since 1893: 38 garden cottages in the Montecito foothills, each with a fireplace and an outdoor tub, with the restaurants included in the rate.

How we choose the hotels

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

In the hills above Montecito, 25 minutes from Santa Barbara airport and 8 from the nearest beach by car; a car is needed for everything but the trails.

  2. Character

A citrus ranch that has taken guests since 1893: the adobe of 1825, the Kennedys’ honeymoon cottage, gardens in flower all year.

  3. Rooms

38 cottages of 72 to 557 m², each with a fireplace, a patio and an outdoor shower; no 2 are furnished alike.

  4. Food and social life

3 meals a day included, at a restaurant with Wine Spectator’s Grand Award and a 16,000-bottle cellar; alcohol is extra.

  5. Wellness

One outdoor pool heated to 28°C, a gym open round the clock and a spa with massages from $275; no sauna or steam room is published.

  6. The stay as a whole

Google Hotels: $3,095 to $9,995 a night for 2 before taxes, October 2026 to January 2027, with meals included.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do San Ysidro Ranch’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the immaculate gardens, the quiet, the ocean view from the restaurant terrace and the trails that start at the entrance.

  2. Room

7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the fireplace, the outdoor shower, the hot tub on the patio and a garden to themselves.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests come back to the kindness of the waiters at the Stonehouse and of the front desk, and to the care with which the gardens are kept.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is part of the rate: the Stonehouse serves it from 7am to 9.30am, or it is brought to the cottage patio.

  5. Price

5 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Stonehouse, or served in the cottage, are part of every rate, and that is what guests who find the bill fair point to.

The scores come from 271 Google reviews with text, left from 19 October 2013 to 24 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay around Montecito, Santa Barbara and Ojai: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 8 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against around Montecito, Santa Barbara and Ojai:

  • Rosewood Miramar Beach
  • El Encanto
  • The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara
  • Hotel Californian
  • Ojai Valley Inn

Price: for two on the night of 15 December 2026, from $3,095 (seen on Google Hotels on 13 October 2026).

What a night costs, season by season

Google priced one night taken alone, for 2 adults, before tax, at $3,295 to $3,895 in the last weeks of October 2026, then from $3,095 to $4,295 until 26 May 2027 and from $3,095 to $4,095 until 8 September, leaving 102 nights without a price. For a weekend I would book Friday and Saturday together: on 8 October 2026 the booking engine sold Saturday 7 November only within a Friday-to-Sunday stay; for one night taken alone, Google and the engine agreed on $3,095 for the Daisy cottage on 10 November 2026.

The lowest price any seller showed on Google Hotels for one night searched alone, for 2 adults, before tax, read 13 October 2026; no cottage is named and meals are included. The calendar stops on 8 September 2027; 17 October 2026 alone showed $6,795. Booked as 7 nights from 16 November 2026, the lowest seller Google listed that day asked $4,530 a night; the hotel’s own listing, $4,530.

Questions before you book

What travellers ask before choosing San Ysidro Ranch, answered from the sources read on 8 October 2026.

What kind of hotel is San Ysidro Ranch?

A hotel of 38 cottages on a 550-acre estate in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains, in business since 1893 and signed «A Ty Warner Property». The official history tells of Franciscan monks who named the land after Saint Isidore, a citrus ranch that picked 300,000 oranges a year, and guests from Winston Churchill in 1912 to John and Jacqueline Kennedy on honeymoon.

Its post is addressed to Santa Barbara, CA 93108, and Google places it in Montecito, the unincorporated town east of the city. The awards page lists 22nd place in the World’s 50 Best Hotels of 2026 and first in the United States, a MICHELIN Key and Forbes’ 5 stars in 2022; Google Hotels files it as a 4-star hotel and prints 500 acres.

What are the cottages like, and how big are they?

The cottages page lists 38, each with its own name and page: 15 studios, 18 with one bedroom and 5 with 2. They run from Daisy, 775 square feet or 72 m², to Warner, 6,000 square feet or 557 m²; the one-bedroom cottages measure 125 to 204 m². Each has a private entrance, a fireplace, a king canopy bed, heated bathroom floors, a patio, an outdoor rain shower and air conditioning.

For the night of 10 November 2026 the official booking engine asked $3,095 for Daisy, $3,295 for 5 other studios, $4,495 for Creek, $5,195 for Oak and $9,995 for Kennedy, before taxes. Sycamore and Terrace are the 2 accessible cottages. Google Hotels gives the Kennedy cottage 2,000 square feet; its official page says 2,700.

Where is it, and how quiet?

At 900 San Ysidro Lane, at the top of San Ysidro Road in Montecito, east of Santa Barbara. From the hotel, the Montecito Village shops are 1.2 miles by road, 5 minutes; the county courthouse in downtown Santa Barbara 6.2 miles and 15 minutes; Stearns Wharf 5.9 miles, all calculated on OpenStreetMap’s roads.

The property is gated, with a guardhouse that admits hotel guests and people with a table at the restaurant, says the official FAQ. Guests describe it as very quiet; weddings are held in the gardens, for up to 100 guests. A car is needed for everything except the trails that start at the entrance.

How do you get there, and when can you check in?

By car. The directions page sends drivers off US Highway 101 at San Ysidro Road, then about a mile uphill and right into San Ysidro Lane. Santa Barbara airport is 15.5 miles away, 25 minutes; Los Angeles airport 94.6 miles, about 2 hours with clear roads.

The hotel has no shuttle and arranges transport when asked. Check-in is at 4pm and check-out at noon; an early arrival is noted on the booking and cannot be guaranteed. Expedia gives a minimum check-in age of 21, the official FAQ 18.

Is there parking?

Yes, and it is free. Every cottage has a private space beside it with a charger for electric cars, and restaurant and Speakeasy guests are parked by valet at no charge, according to the official FAQ.

Expedia lists the valet with a surcharge; the hotel’s own page says parking costs nothing «for both valet and in-house guests». Chargers for restaurant guests are few.

Is there a beach?

The Ranch has no beach or beach club. It stands in the hills, and what the hotel offers is the view of the Pacific and the Channel Islands from the higher cottages and from the Stonehouse terrace.

The hotel’s FAQ puts the beach 5 minutes away by car. Measured on OpenStreetMap, Miramar Beach is 2.3 miles and 8 minutes from the gate, Butterfly Beach 3.3 miles and 10 minutes. Boat charters are among the experiences the hotel arranges.

What is the pool like?

There is one outdoor pool, with loungers, parasols and a pool bar, listed among the resort amenities. The site publishes neither its size nor a separate pool for children.

Each cottage has a sunken spa on its patio, and Warner, the largest, a private pool 33 feet long, about 10 metres. Pets are kept out of the pool area.

Is the pool heated, and is it open all year?

Yes: the official FAQ says the outdoor pool is heated to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, about 28°C. No seasonal closure is published, and the pool’s hours are not on the site.

The private pool of the Warner cottage is heated too, its page says.

Where do you eat, and at what times?

At Stonehouse, in the old citrus packing house: breakfast from 7 to 9.30am, lunch from 11am to 2pm Monday to Saturday, dinner from 5 to 9pm, and a Champagne Brunch on Sundays from 10am to 2pm. The Speakeasy opens at 5pm, with live music from 7 to 10.30pm; the Veranda serves afternoon tea and private dinners by the fire.

Expedia still names a restaurant called Plow and Angel, which the hotel’s dining pages no longer list.

What does the rate include to eat and drink?

Every stay includes dining. The official site calls it «complimentary dining included with every stay», in the restaurants or in the cottage, and the booking engine labels each rate «Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Included».

Alcohol is excluded, as the cottages page states, and the minibar’s snacks are free. On the menus the caviar and the seafood tower are marked as additional. Google Hotels and Expedia both describe a free continental breakfast, which understates what the hotel now sells.

What is the spa like?

The Salon & Spa has treatment rooms with fireplaces, a room for 2 called «Love Birds» with a chromotherapy soaking tub and a steam shower, a patio where juices are served, a hair salon and nail treatments. The site publishes no floor area.

No sauna, steam room or spa pool is described on the official page. Expedia counts 4 treatment rooms and a hot tub. Products are Yon-Ka and Natura Bissé for the skin and Shu Uemura for hair; the gym is separate and open 24 hours.

Is the spa included, and can outside guests use it?

Treatments are charged: nothing on the spa page or in the rate’s inclusions makes them part of the stay. The pool, the gym and the gardens come with the cottage.

No day pass is published. The spa page offers a booking button and a telephone number without saying who may book, while the guardhouse, by the hotel’s FAQ, lets in hotel guests and restaurant guests. Spa services are for guests aged 18 and over.

When is the spa open, and do you need to book?

The spa page gives no opening hours; Expedia says only that the spa is open daily. Booking ahead is «strongly recommended», on 805 565 1730.

Is it suitable for children?

There is no kids’ club, as the Condé Nast Traveler review points out, and spa treatments start at 18. Expedia lists babysitting at a charge. The hotel’s own description speaks of a property «catering primarily to couples».

Can you bring a dog?

Yes: all 38 cottages are pet-friendly, says the official FAQ, for a fee of $250 per stay, not refundable. The Pampered Pets Program adds a bed, a water bowl, a welcome treat and a menu for in-room dining.

Pets stay on a lead, are not left alone and may not enter the restaurants, bars, spa, gym or pool area; the cottages’ gardens are not fenced. Expedia gives another figure, $100 per accommodation per stay, and dogs only.

Are there offers or packages?

The site has no offers page. The one package on it is the American Icon Experience, made for the 250th anniversary of the United States: 2 nights in the Kennedy cottage with a private dinner for 2, booked by telephone, with no price shown.

The site links the Leaders Club of The Leading Hotels of the World, of which the hotel is a member according to Expedia. Gift cards are sold online.

Can you get married at San Ysidro Ranch?

No prices are published. Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were married here, the hotel recalls. Condé Nast Traveler writes that the number of weddings is limited.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

The official pages read on 8 October 2026 announce no New Year’s Eve gala, menu or price. Stonehouse serves dinner every day from 5 to 9pm and the Speakeasy has live music every night, so both are open on 31 December by the published hours.

For staying guests dinner is in the rate. On the booking engine a stay of 2 nights from 31 December was not for sale; 3 nights from 30 December to 2 January started at $3,995 a night in the Honeysuckle cottage, $11,985 in all before taxes.

How much does a night cost?

What is added to the price?

Taxes, and nothing else: the official FAQ says parking and resort fees are in the room rate and «taxes are the only additional item». The booking engine prints «Before taxes, including all fees».

As a measure, for the night of 9 October 2026 the hotel’s link on Google Hotels added $1,140.18 of taxes to $6,995, a total of $8,135.19, or 16.3%. Alcohol, spa treatments, the pet fee, laundry and an extra guest are charged apart.
