The Astors’ palace on Fifth Avenue, with a butler behind the door
John Jacob Astor IV opened the hotel in 1904 on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street; it has been a city landmark since 1988. You arrive through the door on 55th Street, and the butler is on hand from the start: coffee or tea brought up on arrival, the suitcase unpacked, 2 garments a person pressed, and an e-mail address that answers at any hour.
The 171 rooms and 67 suites were redesigned by Champalimaud Design and unveiled in the summer of 2026: violet velvet, brass, marble and onyx beneath the old mouldings and crystal chandeliers. The Superior starts at 39 m², generous for Manhattan; the Dior Suite, designed with the fashion house, and the Bentley Suite, inspired by the carmaker, run to 153 m² and look over Central Park.
In the evening you go down to the King Cole Bar, under the mural Maxfield Parrish painted in 1906 for another Astor hotel, here since 1932, and order a Red Snapper: the Bloody Mary under the name the bar gave it in 1934. There is no spa and no pool; the hotel has a gym open round the clock, free for guests.

What do The St. Regis New York’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Fifth Avenue is at the door: Central Park, MoMA and the Midtown shops are all on foot, and guests put it among the first things they mention.
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The rooms are large by New York standards and every one comes with a butler; since July 2026, with the redesign finished, guests who praise them call them spacious and well kept, while 3 guests in August and September describe faults in the bathroom, the wardrobe and the air conditioning.
6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests remember butlers, King Cole Bar bartenders and front-desk staff by name; others describe waits for the room and a cool welcome at check-in.
5 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast is at La Maisonette: guests who like it remember the welcome and the morning coffee, those who do not the slow service and the bill.
Guests weigh the bill against the upkeep of the rooms and the charges that come on top, from the destination fee to coffee in the room.
| What | Score out of 10 | Guests who mention it | Happy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location | 8.0 | 108 | 88% |
| Room | 6.7 | 152 | 69% |
| Staff and service | 6.5 | 371 | 62% |
| Breakfast | 5.3 | 53 | 47% |
| Price | – | 104 | 16% |
The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 1 March 2020 to 2 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in New York: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 15 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in New York:
