El Quijote
Spanish since 1930, with a Basque kitchen: the seafood paella costs $58; 5 to 11pm, midnight at weekends.
Hotel Chelsea, at 222 West 23rd Street in Chelsea, New York, is the 1884 building where Dylan Thomas, Leonard Cohen and Patti Smith lived: reopened in 2022 after 11 years of works, it has wrought-iron balconies over the street and paintings on every landing.

For quiet I would ask for a tenth-floor Chelsea Loft: approximately 56–65 m², with high ceilings, a sitting area and a deep soaking tub. It has no balcony.
For 4–10 January 2027, the calendar read on 13 October 2026 shows $429–442 a night for 2 adults before tax; its dearest nights are 18 and 19 December 2026, at $2,195 each.
With a voucher from the front desk, hotel guests pay $50 for 24 hours at Icon Parking, 51 West 22nd Street. Spa treatments carry an automatic 20% service charge at checkout.
The penthouse spa admits hotel guests without a treatment booking, subject to capacity, between 9am and 8pm. Any accompanying guests must be registered on the hotel reservation.
The building went up in 1884 as a housing cooperative, designed by Philip Hubert, and has been a hotel with residents since 1905. Here Arthur C. Clarke wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin all lived here. It closed in 2011; new owners bought it in 2016 for $250 million and reopened it in 2022 after a $100 million restoration, El Quijote in February and the rooms in March.
Rooms run from the 19 m² Petite Chelsea to the 158 m² Two Bedroom Suite, with parquet, marble-and-brass bathrooms and, in many, the iron balcony over the street. On the ground floor are El Quijote, Spanish since 1930, the Lobby Bar, open to all from 11am to 2am, and Café Chelsea; in the basement the Japanese Teruko. At the top, the spa with its cedar sauna and terrace, free for guests.
Guests praise the staff, the bar and the art in the corridors. On Google the hotel scores 4.8 out of 5 from 1,040 reviews, on Tripadvisor 4.9 from 452, and the MICHELIN Guide gives it one Key. 23rd Street can be heard in the street-facing rooms; the smallest room, the Petite Chelsea, measures 19 m²; and 14.75% tax and $3.50 a night come on top of the rate.
We read the 475 most recent Google reviews with text and counted who talks about what: 93% of those who write about the location are happy, 84% of those who mention the service, 77% of those who mention the rooms. Guests who say the Chelsea is worth the price write about its history and character, retained through the restoration; others return to the size of the smaller rooms.

The scores come from 475 Google reviews with text, left from 18 October 2022 to 4 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Chelsea and around: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 4 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

Begin at Café Chelsea, where the all-day menu draws on French bistro cooking.
Walk west to the 23rd Street entrance of the High Line, 10 minutes from the hotel.
Back at the hotel, the gym occupies the rooftop steeple, once a residence and artist’s loft.
At El Quijote, the bar welcomes walk-ins and serves the full dinner menu.
The Lobby Bar stays open until 2am, leaving time to return after an evening out.
Platform scores and what guests say: the room, the rooftop spa and gym, the art in the corridors, a weekend as residents.
Scores read on 4 October 2026
From the hotel’s Google listing, in 2026: a room with a deep tub, the rooftop spa and gym, art on every floor and a weekend as residents.
On the fifth floor, facing south: a large bathroom with a deep tub and a rain shower, a walk-through dressing area, a king bed that was a joy to sleep in.
The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that there is no pool; otherwise, prompt service, and the rooftop spa and gym are very well done.
Every floor is lined with artworks; the concierge will show you round the collection if you ask. The one gripe is the toiletries, below the standard of everything else.
It felt like renting an apartment in Chelsea for the weekend: the balcony with a table and chairs in February, a huge tub, and the High Line, the Village and the Flatiron on foot.
Beautiful, like stepping back in time; but in late December the shower turned icy after a minute, and the next day it never ran hot. The advice: try it on arrival and call maintenance.
