The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, New York stands on Fifth Avenue at East 61st Street, facing Central Park, and its 1930 tower still has a lift operator in white gloves.
A week here, month by monthFor a few days of classic New York with the park below your window: a Park View room between the 34th and 39th floors, breakfast at Perrine, jazz at Two E. For a spa, a pool or recently refitted rooms, another Fifth Avenue hotel suits better: the renovation in The Pierre’s own history dates from 2009.
Official siteDoes it suit you?
5 pairs of hotels, and the guide tells you whether this one suits you.
A 1930 grand hotel on the corner of the park, with its rituals intact
You arrive on East 61st Street, under the grey canopy, and go up with a lift operator who presses the button for you. The tower dates from 1930, a city landmark since 1981, run by Taj since 2005, and the building also holds a co-op’s private apartments. The rooms worth the trip are the Park View rooms between the 34th and 39th floors: 30 m² and Central Park through the window.
Inside, 3 rooms are worth knowing. In the Rotunda, dinner is served beneath the trompe-l’œil murals Edward Melcarth painted in 1967 and a ceiling painted as a blue sky. Perrine cooks French dishes and an Indian menu in memory of the Café Pierre of the 1950s; breakfast puts uttapam and aloo paratha beside the eggs Benedict. Two E, once the Gentleman’s Library, opens at 5pm and has live music from Tuesday to Saturday until 11pm.
Service is what guests praise most: they name the lift operators and the doormen, and a few the hotel’s car, which drops guests in town when it is free. The same reviews describe rooms and corridors showing their years and noisy air conditioning: anyone who wants new will find other Fifth Avenue addresses in the guide.

What do The Pierre’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Central Park is across Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman a short walk away; guests who write about the corner note it sits out of the crowds at Grand Army Plaza.
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests praise the size, the beds and the quiet of the high floors with the park outside; others write of tired furnishings and carpets and noisy air conditioning.
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The lift operators, the doormen and a concierge who finds a table or a car recur; others write of the front desk, rooms not ready on arrival and weak Wi-Fi.
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Those who mention it remember breakfast at Perrine before a walk in the park; others write of long waits and high prices for a plate of eggs.
Most find the price high and set it against rooms and corridors due a refit; those who find it fair are paying for the address and the service.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 1 June 2019 to 2 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay on Fifth Avenue, at the corner of Central Park: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 15 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

In July 2026 a guest writes of a third stay, the first with children, describes how the children were welcomed and suggests booking a suite connected to a king room, closing the outer doors to make a 2-bedroom suite.
