NIHI Sumba is a resort of 31 villas on Nihiwatu beach in Wanokaka, on the west of the island of Sumba, facing the wave at Occy’s Left: 3 meals a day, soft drinks and the airport transfer are in the rate.
NIHI Sumba is for travellers who want their days outdoors, on horseback at dawn, on the wave at Occy’s Left or walking to the Nihioka spa, with a pool villa to come back to. For a few days of swimming alone, another island suits better: on this coast the currents are strong.

I would ask for a Marangga, a single-level villa on the ocean: its balé above the shore can be set for dinner, a massage or a night under netting. A guest who stayed in one, writing in October 2025, praises above all its view.
Week together, night alone
Read on Google on 16 October 2026, a night of the 7 booked together from 16 November 2026 cost IDR 27,948,764 with the lowest of 9 sellers. Read the same day, one night taken alone on 27 October 2026 cost IDR 41,099,264.
Tax, service and transfer
Rates exclude 21% government tax and service charge, and the October 2026 activity price list adds the same 21%. The shared safari-car transfer to and from the airport is in the rate; a private car costs US$666 for up to 4 passengers.
The Spa Safari on foot
To reach the Nihioka spa, the Spa Safari offers a 120-minute coastal trek, a 90-minute ride or cycle, or a 15-minute drive. 3 guests, writing between July 2025 and October 2026, praise the trek they made; the resort’s packing list includes sturdy walking shoes.
What NIHI Sumba is
The first camp on Nihiwatu beach went up in 1988, pitched by surfers looking for the perfect wave. Today there are 31 villas over 270 hectares and 93% of the staff come from Sumba, according to the 2026 factsheet; the Sumba Foundation, set up alongside the resort, brings clean water and schooling to the villages, and a tour of its projects is included.
The villas come in 24 types: 10 with one bedroom, 10 with 2, the Treehouse and 2 others with 3, and the Marangga Family Estate with 4. All have a pool except Kasambi Suite, and the site gives no floor areas. The Marangga villas sit on the ocean, Hillrise and the Puncak villas on top of the hill, and Villa Rahasia alone at Nihioka, above the spa.
The rate covers breakfast, lunch and dinner from the menu, soft drinks, a minibar restocked daily, laundry and Happiest Hour at the Boathouse, 5:30 to 6:30pm, with Indonesian beer and house wine. Other drinks, the Kaboku omakase, the spa, surfing and excursions are extra, each with 11% tax and 10% service on top (rates and inclusions).
Days turn on the stables’ Sandalwood horses, on the wave at Occy’s Left, open to 15 registered surfers a day, and on Nihioka, the spa valley 15 minutes away by road, which you can also reach on foot in 2 hours along the coast and through the villages.

Location
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Nihiwatu beach, the horses on the sand, the wave at Occy’s Left and the sunsets return in review after review; the long journey comes up too, from the flight out of Bali to the drive from Tambolaka, mostly as worth making.
Room
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of secluded villas with a pool and the ocean in front, and of the sea as the only sound; in 2024, 2 of them found the interiors a little dated.
Staff and service
9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The Guest Kaptens, the personal butlers who come with every villa, come up again and again, with a welcome that starts at Bali airport, bags checked in and boarding pass in hand.
Breakfast
Breakfast is ordered à la carte at Ombak, from 6:30 to 11am, and is included like every meal; those who mention it praise the choice and the cooking.
Price
6 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. The price divides guests: those who are happy write that the journey and the cost are worth what they find; those who are not set the bill against other luxury resorts.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 28 February 2017 to 16 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay on Sumba: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 16 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

NIHI Sumba reviews
On Google the Guest Kaptens, the horses, the Spa Safari and the food keep coming back; when the long journey comes up, it is mostly as worth making.
Scores read on 16 October 2026 on Google; Tripadvisor’s as Google Hotels shows it.
A couple on honeymoon, in a review from October 2026, describe 3 nights in a Marangga villa: 2 sun decks, the outdoor shower, the villa made up 2 times a day and no sound but the sea. Then the Spa Safari on foot and a ride at sunset.
A couple, in a review from October 2026, describe a welcome that began in Bali, with a member of the resort’s staff seeing them through to the gate, then the drive across the island in an open car. They spent an afternoon speaking English with local children and write that seeing it all takes at least 5 nights.
A father, in May 2026, writes that the resort’s nannies looked after his small son while he and his wife went on excursions. His advice: walk to the Spa Safari, 2 hours on foot, and skip the drive.
A guest who stayed a week, in July 2025, describes surfing Occy’s Left as a beginner on a 7-foot-6 board one of the surf team found for him, and writes that the 4 flights it took to get there were worth it.
A guest in September 2026 found the sea calm enough to swim or snorkel only rarely; they recommend the kids’ club, the Spa Safari on foot and the hike to 2 waterfalls, but found the excursions dear, that hike priced at almost 10 times what other hotels on the island charge.
Google Hotels, read on 16 October 2026 for 2 adults, showed IDR 41,099,264 a night for 27 and 29 October 2026, IDR 31,013,888 for 8 December 2026, IDR 26,048,512 for 9 February 2027 and IDR 24,852,480 for 13 April 2027, each night booked on its own. For 7 nights from 16 to 23 November 2026 the cheapest seller asked IDR 27,948,764 a night; for 3 nights from 12 to 15 January 2027, IDR 25,565,866 a night.
The year’s calendar gave only one other price, IDR 146,735,104 for 20 June 2027, without naming the villa. In the Booking.com links on the Google Hotels card the figures already include tax; the resort’s own rates, by contrast, are quoted before 21% tax and service and include 3 meals, soft drinks, the shared transfer from Tambolaka, laundry and Happiest Hour (rates).

The resort publishes nothing on accessibility. Many villas stand on the hill, and 2 guests, in June 2022 and June 2024, write of the many stairs between one place and the next, steep ones in the 2024 review; Google’s card lists an accessible pool and accessible parking without details.
What else is there to do?
Snorkelling and paddleboarding, included when the sea allows; boat trips and fishing, waterfall treks, the villages and the Sumba Foundation’s projects, cooking classes, padel, pickleball, tennis, the gym and yoga. The October 2026 price list gives the price of each paid one.
Can you bring pets?
Neither the site, nor the FAQ, nor the 2026 factsheet mentions pets.
What are the check-in and check-out times, and until when can you cancel?
Check-in is from 2pm, check-out by 11am (rates); Google lists a 24-hour front desk and luggage storage. On the site’s rate the 25% deposit is not refunded, and from 90, 60 or 30 days before arrival, depending on the season, nothing is.
Wi-Fi, cash and power: what should you know?
Satellite Wi-Fi covers the whole resort, villas included, and a repeater carries the mobile signal. There is a cash machine, and credit cards are taken at check-out, with no cash advances. Power comes from generators at 220 volts, with sockets for 2 round pins and an adaptor in every villa (FAQ).
