It suits a couple who want 3 or 4 nights in the forest, with dinner cooked over fire, rituals at the river temple and a Culturist planning each day. It suits less anyone who struggles with stairs or travels with children under 6: the camp steps down the valley, and the hotel itself says so.

Our verdict

A black-roofed tent at the edge of a green rice field, with the palms of Keliki behind it.

A camp on a slope of forest above the Wos River, where the day runs on rituals: tea at 3pm, a blessing at dusk, dinner round a fire.

Capella Ubud opened in 2018 in the village of Keliki, in the district of Tegallalang, and turned 8 in July 2026. Bill Bensley designed it as the camp of European settlers of the 1800s; the hotel’s own page says not one tree was cut and the tents were moved around them. There are 23 keys: 22 one-bedroom tents of 173 m² and a Two Bedroom Lodge of 217 m², counted in the fact sheet. The MICHELIN Guide gives it Two Keys, and Travel + Leisure named it the best resort in Indonesia in 2026, as the fact sheet records.

Each tent has a theme and a name of its own: guests write of the Carpenter’s Tent, the Archivist and the Panther, with antiques, a hammered-copper bath and a deck over the trees. The day has a shape. Breakfast is at Mads Lange; afternoon tea and the evening cocktail are served free in the Officers’ Tent, a lounge kept for guests; Api Jiwa cooks one dinner a night on fire made of rice straw from the paddies; the Campfire shows silent films of 19th-century Bali with hot chocolate and marshmallows.

The price of the setting is the slope. The camp runs down to the Wos River on steps: one guest counted about 120 between tent and reception, another the equivalent of 6 flights of stairs. The accommodation page advises against it for children under 6 and for anyone with mobility problems; the Forest Tents sit close to the camp’s facilities and are reached by buggy, and the Lodge is near the restaurants and spa. Ubud is about 10 km away by road, with a free shuttle 3 times a day.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Capella Ubud’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of the quiet of the Keliki forest and its sounds at night; the less happy mention the steps between the tents and the rest of the camp, and one guest, in September 2026, finds the hotel a little far from the airport.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of large tents, each with a theme and a name, the copper bath and the private pool; the less happy describe the toilet behind a curtain and the stairs to reach the tent.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of staff who call them by name and remember each day’s plans, of the Culturist who looks after them from arrival and of tea and a snack left in the tent at turndown; one guest, in July 2026, describes the courtesy room given for a shower before a late flight.

  4. Breakfast

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests write of breakfast at Mads Lange served at the table, with plenty of choice and the valley in front; one guest, in April 2026, remembers the table looking over the pool and the palms.

  5. Price

6 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. Those who are happy write that dinner at Api Jiwa and the service are worth the price; those who are not find the massages dear next to the rest of Ubud, and one guest, in November 2023, found lower rates through travel agents.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 11 July 2020 to 9 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Ubud: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 16 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Ubud:

  • Amandari
  • Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan
  • COMO Shambhala Estate

Good to know before you book

  • The camp is a slope of steps. The accommodation page says some tents sit high on steep ground and advises against the camp for guests with mobility problems; in May 2026 a guest wrote of about 120 steep steps between tent and reception, and in April 2026 another of the equivalent of 6 flights of stairs. The Forest Tents are reached by buggy and the Lodge sits by the restaurants and spa.

  • The hotel advises against the camp for children under 6, because of the terrain, on its accommodation page. Booking.com accepts all ages; Api Jiwa takes children from 8 and the spa guests from 18.

  • Only some private pools are heated: the infinity pools of the 6 Keliki Tents and the 19 m² pool of the Lodge. In the Valley, Forest and Terrace Tents the water is at natural temperature, as each tent’s page says; in May 2026 a guest wrote that the pool of a Valley Tent was very cold, deep in the valley under the canopy. The shared Cistern is heated.

  • The bathroom is open to the room. In April 2026 a guest wrote that no door separates it from the bedroom; in September 2025 another, that the toilet sits behind a curtain. Each tent has a copper bath with indoor and outdoor showers.

  • The airport transfer is free only from 4 nights. The accommodation page includes the return trip with a Camp Navigator for stays of 4 nights or more; the hotel puts Ngurah Rai at 1 hour 45 minutes by car.

  • Menus and treatments are quoted before 21% tax and service, as the bar’s menu and the spa menu say. The nightly prices Google Hotels shows in Indonesia already include it: the hotel’s own listing for 17 October 2026 read IDR 22,401,466, tax included, on Google Hotels.

  • No pets: Booking.com says pets are not allowed, and so does Google Hotels. The camp also forbids drones, says the accommodation page.

  • The Officers’ Tent is kept for guests, says the hotel’s page. Visitors book dinner at Api Jiwa or Mads Lange or a treatment at Auriga; 2 visitors who called in to look round, in August 2025 and May 2022, were not allowed to.

Questions before you book

What kind of hotel is Capella Ubud, Bali?

A 5-star tented camp of 23 keys in the forest of Keliki, in the Tegallalang district north of Ubud, opened in 2018 and designed by Bill Bensley as a camp of 19th-century European settlers. The fact sheet counts 22 one-bedroom tents of 173 m² and a Two Bedroom Lodge of 217 m², each with a private pool.

The MICHELIN Guide gives it Two Keys; in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2026 it is the first resort in Indonesia and the fifth hotel in the world, as the fact sheet records. It celebrated 8 years in July 2026.

What are the tents like?

5 categories, all listed on the accommodation page: 6 Keliki Tents on the valley’s edge with a heated infinity pool; 7 Valley Tents deep in the forest; 6 Forest Tents near the camp’s facilities, reached by buggy; 3 Terrace Tents on the outer edge, one over rice fields. All are 173 m², for 2 adults, with a king bed.

Every tent has a hammered-copper bath, indoor and outdoor showers, a deck with daybeds, an Illy coffee machine and a trunk of free drinks, including Bintang and infused spirits, replenished daily. Air conditioning is manual, without a thermostat, says the compendium; a television comes only on request.

Which tents have a heated pool?

Every tent and the Lodge has its own pool. The 6 Keliki Tents have a heated infinity pool and the Lodge a heated pool of 19 m²; in the Valley, Forest and Terrace Tents the plunge pool is at natural temperature. The Cistern, the shared pool, is heated.

What is the Two Bedroom Lodge?

The only key with 2 bedrooms: 217 m² with a living room open onto a heated pool of 19 m², a king bedroom and a twin bedroom, each with its own bathroom, near the restaurants and spa, says its page. It takes 4 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children; the Jungle Family Escape sells it for 3 nights with a family blessing at the Wos River Temple.

What is the shared pool like?

The Cistern is a 20-metre outdoor heated pool at the centre of the camp, open from 7am to 8pm, with towels and lockers, says the compendium; the fact sheet gives it 120 m². The Mortar & Pestle Bar beside it serves snacks and cocktails from 10am to 8pm.

The Mortar & Pestle Bar by the pool opens from 10am to 8pm and the Campfire from 6 to 11pm; in-tent dining, served in stacked tiffin boxes, runs 24 hours. Menus add 21% tax and service: a Bintang at the bar costs IDR 90,000, a nasi goreng in the tent IDR 320,000, on the bar’s menu and the in-tent menu.

What is Api Jiwa, and how much does dinner cost?

Ngurah Rai is about 46 km by road; the hotel puts it at 1 hour 45 minutes by car. The return transfer with a Camp Navigator is free for stays of 4 nights or more, says the accommodation page; for shorter stays the hotel’s car is paid, at a price not published.

What are check-in and check-out times?

Check-in from 3pm and check-out by noon, say the tent pages; a later departure is asked of the Culturist, says the compendium. A guest writing in July 2026 describes the hospitality room given for a shower after check-out, before a late flight.

Are pets allowed?

No. Booking.com says pets are not allowed, and Google Hotels lists them as not allowed.

Is Capella Ubud good for children?

Children are accepted, but the hotel advises against the camp for children under 6, because of the steep terrain, on its accommodation page. Api Jiwa takes them from 8 and Auriga from 18. The Little Stars programme is free at 11 on most mornings, crafts, a walk in the rice fields with a farmer, planting a wishing tree; Keliki painting costs IDR 500,000 plus 21% for a child.

The Two Bedroom Lodge is the family key, and the compendium recommends asking for babysitting 24 hours ahead. A guest in November 2025 recommends the camp to families with older children, because of the steps.

Is the camp accessible?

Hardly: the hotel itself says it is not suited to guests with mobility problems, on a steep forest slope; the Keliki and Valley Tents are reached by steps. The Forest Tents are reached by buggy and the Lodge sits near the restaurants and spa. One guest counted about 120 steep steps to reception, another the equivalent of 6 flights of stairs; a guest writing in September 2025 says a walking stick is given when needed.

What is it like to sleep in a tent?

The canvas lets the forest in all night, which the hotel counts as part of the stay; guests who mentioned the noise, writing in September 2026, found earplugs left at turndown. The air conditioning is manual. Insects come with the forest: the welcome bag holds repellent and a rain poncho, and the hotel recommends non-slip shoes for the wet season.

The bathroom is open: several guests write that the toilet sits behind a curtain, one that no door separates bathroom and bedroom. Each tent has its own theme and name, after a tradesman, a soldier or an artist, as a guest put it in January 2026.

What activities does the camp run?

Free, on the weekly schedule: Surya yoga in the morning and Chandra yoga in the late afternoon, a botanical walk, eco-printing, Balinese dance and calligraphy, HIIT, the farming club, a group walk in the rice fields on Fridays and, at 6pm, the Sandikala ritual at the camp temple.

Paid: the one-hour Keliki rice-paddy trek on the spa menu (IDR 600,000 plus 21%) and the days out: a Melukat at the springs of Sebatu at IDR 2,500,000 for 2, Mount Batur by vintage jeep at IDR 5,100,000 for 2 or a 1970s VW through the villages. The hotel’s pages offer no golf.

What do guests say about Capella Ubud?

On 16 October 2026 Google showed 4.8/5 from 822 reviews, Tripadvisor 4.9/5 from 658 and Booking.com 9.6/10 from 35. Guests name the staff who learn their names, the tents and Api Jiwa; what they warn about is the steps and the toilet behind a curtain, and those who find the bill high point at the massages next to the rest of Ubud.

Can you get married at Capella Ubud?

Yes, on a small scale. The 2025 packages linked from the weddings page start at IDR 41,000,000 for a ceremony for the couple, with 2 nights in a Keliki Tent required; IDR 63,750,000 buys a ceremony for up to 16 guests at the Lodge, and a buy-out of the whole camp starts at IDR 1,185,000,000 for 50 guests, all plus 21%. Venues run from the Wos River deck for 6 to the Campfire lawn for 45, with a buy-out of the camp. Smaller occasions, a proposal or a candlelit dinner, are arranged by the hotel’s Wedding Whisperer, says the weddings page.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

The 2026 programme was not on the site on 16 October 2026. For 2025 the festive page listed a 7-course dinner at Api Jiwa at IDR 2,500,000 a person with a glass of Champagne and a menu at Mads Lange at IDR 1,480,000, plus 21%. The A Season of Giving offer asks for 3 nights for stays from 20 December 2026 to 10 January 2027.

Is the hotel open, and is anything closed?

It is open; its pages on 16 October 2026 announce no closure and sell stays into 2027. The camp celebrated 8 years in July 2026, says the Keliki, Our Home page.

Who designed Capella Ubud?

Bill Bensley, as a tribute to the European settlers of the 1800s, says the home page; the dining room takes its name from Mads Lange, the Danish spice trader called the White King of Bali. Not one tree was cut, the hotel’s page says: the tents were moved to keep the valley’s contours.

Can you hold a meeting or an event?

Small ones: the fact sheet lists the Wos River deck and a tent’s deck for 6, the Lodge’s deck for 14, the Cistern’s deck for 40 and the Campfire lawn for 45, the last 2 with a buy-out of the camp. Groups of more than 20 count as a buy-out, quoted separately; the 2025 wedding packages price a 3-course dinner at Mads Lange at IDR 750,000 a person, plus 21%. Wi-Fi is free in every tent and across the camp.
