At RoyAlp I would choose March: the train to the slopes leaves from outside the hotel, and from 21 to 24 March 2027 a night for 2 starts at CHF 391. If you are thinking of Christmas, note that RoyAlp’s offers do not apply from 14 December to 10 January.

Like a regular

The entrance under its timber canopy
  1. The terrace on the peaks

I would ask for the mountain-view Executive: 40 m² and a private terrace looking at the snowy peaks. For more space, the mountain-view Junior Suite reaches 55 m² with the same outlook.

  2. The week before Christmas

From 14 to 20 December 2026 a night for 2 runs from CHF 354 to CHF 389, each taken alone. I would start with that week, before the calendar climbs for the holidays.

  3. Parking, dog and tax

Parking costs CHF 15 a day outdoors and CHF 30 in the garage, and a dog CHF 40 a night. Tourist tax adds just under CHF 4 per adult per night, and just under CHF 2 between the ages of 6 and 15.

  4. Aperitif at BeAr’s

At BeAr’s Bar the aperitif comes with live music, and caviar can be ordered with the house cocktails; on Fridays and Saturdays the bar stays open until midnight.

What RoyAlp is

Guests write most about the spacious rooms and the train to the slopes outside the hotel; they are cooler about the bill, so I would start with the offers. 48h Winter Mountain Dream combines 2 nights in a mountain-view Executive, breakfast and CHF 200 to spend at the spa.12

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Chalet RoyAlp’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests write about the train to the slopes outside the hotel, the mountain view and the village a few steps away.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests like the spacious rooms, the warm wood and the comfortable beds; some find them a little dated.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Staff come across as welcoming and attentive, at the spa as at reception; some guests describe waits for room service and in the restaurant.

  4. Breakfast

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Breakfast wins guests over with its choice and produce; some expected more for the category.

  5. Price

Those who mention the bill find it high for the service and the restaurants; those who praise it cite the spa and the rooms.

326 guests said so on Google, from 27 October 2019 to 28 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Villars-sur-Ollon and Gstaad: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 20 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Villars-sur-Ollon and Gstaad:

Price: for 2, the night of 13 December 2026, from 339 CHF on Google Hotels on 20 October 2026.

Your day

In the morning

Breakfast at Le Rochegrise

I would start at Le Rochegrise, where breakfast is included.

Then

The train to Bretaye

Then I would take the train that stops at the foot of the hotel and climbs to Bretaye.

In the afternoon

Children at the Kids’ Club

In the afternoon children aged 4 to 12 would go to the Kids’ Club.

From 6pm

The spa in quiet

From 6pm to 9pm the spa keeps its quiet time, and that is when I would go.

Aperitif time

Music at BeAr’s

I would take an aperitif at BeAr’s Bar, with live music.

At dinner

Fondue at Le Grizzly

I would end with a fondue at Le Grizzly.

Before booking

What kind of hotel is Chalet RoyAlp?

A 5-star Superior hotel classified by HotellerieSuisse, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, opened in 2008. It is 4 traditional chalets with 62 rooms and suites and 27 residences, in the village of Villars-sur-Ollon at 1,300 m.123

What does a night cost?

Google Hotels, read on 20 October 2026 for 2 adults, shows CHF 357 on 4 December 2026, CHF 455 on 12 January 2027 and CHF 485 on 10 July 2027. The dearest night on the calendar is 26 December 2026, at CHF 1,844.1

What are the rooms and suites like?

The rooms all have 40 m²: the Superior and Executive face the park, and the mountain-view Executive has a private terrace facing the peaks. The Junior Suites have 55 m², on the park or the mountains. For families there are 27 residences from 91 to 270 m², with a kitchen and up to 4 bedrooms. I would take the mountain-view Executive. Breakfast is included.123

Where would I have dinner and a drink?

Le Rochegrise cooks local, seasonal food under the Fait Maison label; Le Grizzly is the cellar for raclette and fondue in winter; Le Refuge grills on the plancha on its terrace. BeAr’s Bar is open from 10.30am to 11pm, until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and there is a chef’s table in the kitchen for up to 5. Room service runs around the clock.12

Is breakfast included?

Yes, it comes with the room and is served at Le Rochegrise; in the room it costs extra.1

What is the spa like?

It covers 1,200 m²: a heated indoor pool by a fireplace, a sauna, a steam room, a hot tub, an ice fountain, a sun terrace and a gym open around the clock for hotel guests. There is also a private spa with a hot tub, sauna and fireplace, at CHF 100 for 2 people for 60 minutes. Treatments use Cellcosmet, Biologique Recherche and Comfort Zone.12

Is the spa included, and can outside guests come?

For hotel guests it is included, from 7am to 9pm, with the gym always open; under-16s use it until 6pm. Visitors come in from 10am to 7pm, children aged 2 to 16 until 6pm, and access is free with a treatment of at least 60 minutes. From Monday to Friday WeekDay Spa & Lunch gives 3 hours at the spa and lunch at BeAr’s Bar.123

What is the pool like?

It is indoors and heated, in the spa, with a fireplace beside it; hotel guests can use it from 7am to 9pm, and under-16s until 6pm.12

Can you hold a wedding or a private event here?

Yes. The RiverAlp room, 315 m² with a private terrace, holds 200 people; the Dents du Midi room 100 and the Grand Muveran 80. Quotes are made to measure; as a marker, the 2025 New Year’s Eve dinner cost CHF 250 per person.123

What do guests say?

On Google, 90 of the 95 guests who mention the location speak well of it, and 100 of the 115 who mention their room praise it. They are cooler about the bill: 20 of the 31 who talk about it find it high.1

Is there parking?

Yes: outdoors it costs CHF 15 a day, in the garage CHF 30, and electric charging CHF 60. It is free when you dine at one of the restaurants or book a treatment, and valet parking runs from 8am to 8pm.12

Where is it, and is it quiet?

In the middle of the village of Villars-sur-Ollon, a few minutes on foot from shops and restaurants, with the train stop for the slopes outside. Park-view rooms look onto the hotel garden, mountain-view rooms onto the Vaud Alps; a free shuttle runs into the village.12

Is it open all year?

The rooms are not: they open for the winter and summer seasons, and the next opening is 4 December 2026. The calendar has nights until 10 April 2027 and again in July 2027. The 27 residences are open all year.1234

What else is there?

A Kids’ Club, a private cinema, games rooms, a playground, the Cigare Lounge, 6 meeting rooms, ski and bike storage, room service around the clock and a free shuttle to the village.12

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

On 31 December 2026 the Kids’ Club throws its party, and that evening children dine at the table with their parents. For New Year’s Eve 2025 the dinner cost CHF 250 per adult and CHF 125 per child.12

Are there special offers?

Yes. RoyAlp Winter Family takes 25% off the second, connecting room; 48h Winter Mountain Dream combines 2 nights in a mountain-view Executive, breakfast and CHF 200 of spa credit; WeekDay Spa & Lunch is a spa day from Monday to Friday. The offers do not apply from 14 December to 10 January or from 8 to 28 February.123

Which room would I choose with children?

With 2 children I would book 2 connecting Executive rooms, the second 25% cheaper with RoyAlp Winter Family; with more children I would look at a Junior Residence, 91 m² with 2 bedrooms. The Kids’ Club takes ages 4 to 12.1234

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, for CHF 40 a night.1

What are check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 3pm and the room is left by noon; reception is open around the clock and keeps luggage before and after.1

Still choosing?

The open-air pool facing the Alps

Villars Palace

In Villars you can swim outdoors in January: the Palace heats its pool to 30°C. I would book a south-facing Panorama room with a balcony and leave the forest side to others.

The lakeside façade with its awnings down

Hôtel des Trois Couronnes

Since 1842 the Trois Couronnes façade has looked out over Lake Geneva from the Vevey waterfront. I would book a Junior Suite Lake, south-facing with a sitting area, and keep an hour for the 24-metre indoor pool.

The Bellevue Suite bedroom, with the Jet d’Eau beyond the balcony door

Hôtel d’Angleterre

At the d’Angleterre I would choose the Bellevue Suite: 70 m² with a balcony on the lake, and the Jet d’Eau in the doorway. There are 45 rooms on the Quai du Mont-Blanc, and the Leopard Bar has live music 6 nights a week.

The hotel façade at dusk, its sign lit in the Old Town

Hôtel Les Armures

Les Armures is a 17th-century house one minute from St Peter’s Cathedral. Its 32 rooms share the house with Geneva’s oldest café, where the evening means a moitié-moitié fondue.

The lounge with the fire lit and the murals of the city

Hôtel de la Cigogne

At La Cigogne, on Place Longemalle, the lounge fire is lit on winter evenings beneath murals of the city. Its 49 rooms are all different, a short walk from the lake and the Old Town.

An open French window onto the balcony, with the lake and the Jet d’Eau

Beau-Rivage Genève

At the Beau-Rivage I would choose the Junior Suite Lake View Panorama: 45 m² facing the Jet d’Eau, with balconies. There are 95 rooms and suites on the Quai du Mont-Blanc, and the same family has run the house since 1865.

The Dolder Grand from the air at sunset: the turreted 1899 building between its two curved modern wings, on the wooded hillside above Zurich

The Dolder Grand

Curhaus towers above Zurich, art in the corridors and warm water facing the city.

The Belle Époque façade on Rue du Grand-Chêne: red awnings, wrought-iron balconies and the carved gable above the columned entrance porch lettered “Lausanne-Palace”, with flags; the brasserie’s green awning on the left

Lausanne Palace

Lausanne climbs behind the palace; from the right rooms, the lake appears beyond the rooftops.

Steam rising in the morning from the outdoor sports pool, with frost on the shrubs and the garden, the chalet wings with their wooden balconies on the right and rocky peaks against a clear sky on the left

ERMITAGE Wellness- & Spa-Hotel

In Schönried the brine pool runs outdoors; inside, the Stuben and cake table slow the day.

The palace lit up at blue hour in winter, its towers above the snow-covered chalet roofs of Gstaad, with ski slopes on the mountain behind

Gstaad Palace

The palace Gstaad looks up to, from fondue in an old vault to music at GreenGo.

The Alpine Spa’s outdoor infinity pool at dusk: two bathers at the edge, a lit fountain bowl, and the lake and its shores under a pink and violet sky

Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa

From boat to ridge, Lake Lucerne returns in the view from the warm pool.

The view over the hotel’s roofs in summer: flags over the park, the Schanzengraben canal lined with boats, and Lake Zurich with the Alps on the horizon

Baur au Lac

A park between city and lake, Le Hall under glass and Zurich just beyond the trees.
