I come to Villa Castagnola for days between the park and its private lakeside Lido. Reaching the water means crossing Viale Castagnola, though.

Is it for you?

For 2, I would start with the Suite: the door between bedroom and sitting room lets one person read on the sofa while the other sleeps.

I’d ask for
A balcony with a lake view.
Worth knowing
The category may face the lake, the park or both: choose the view when booking.

Like a regular

  1. Lunch at La Rucola

For lunch, I would choose La Rucola, whose kitchen uses lake fish, local cheeses and fresh pasta. It opens from 12pm to 10.30pm, so you can eat after the usual lunchtime.

  2. The Lido in summer

The Lido opens in summer only, from dawn to dusk. From June to the end of August, its menu is available from 11am to 7pm: I would lunch here to stay close to my lounger.

  3. Room temperature

In summer you can control the air conditioning in your room or suite; in other seasons, heating is centralised. All accommodation is non-smoking.

What Villa Castagnola is

A villa built in 1880 for the Russian Von Ritter family, converted into a guesthouse in 1885. The property has 72 rooms and suites in 9 categories and belongs to Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Works from the owners’ private collection appear in corridors, alcoves and restaurants.1234

In the guide because its park contains the Chiesetta delle Erbette, a consecrated 15th-century chapel available for religious ceremonies.

How we choose the hotels

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest enjoys being close to the centre; another finds the hotel walkable yet away from the crowds.

  2. Room

7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest sleeps well with the blackout curtains; another describes dated carpets and furniture.

  3. Staff and service

One guest appreciates the effort to speak Arabic; another describes discomfort from the gap between the beds and the lack of a conversation with a manager.

  4. Breakfast

6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. One guest recalls an excellent buffet; another would like more cheeses, berries and choice of tea.

  5. Price

One guest finds the price fair; another describes having their payment converted from francs to euros without being asked.

85 guests said so on Google, from 16 November 2024 to 25 October 2026. The other hotels are assessed on the same 5 themes. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against among five-star hotels in the Lugano region:

  • Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano
  • Swiss Diamond Hotel Lugano
  • THE VIEW Lugano, an SLH Hotel
  • Villa Principe Leopoldo

Price: for 2, the night of 30 November 2026, from 374 CHF on Google Hotels on 28 October 2026.

Where to linger

Arté al Lago tables beside lake-facing windows

Arté al Lago

For dinner beside the water, I would book Arté al Lago, in the gallery at Rivetta Alfonsina Storni 1. The kitchen serves Tuesday to Saturday, 7pm to 9.30pm. The gallery can also be visited by appointment.11

Wooden sauna benches with white towels

Sauna and warm water

I would visit the Hydropool before the sauna; there are also a bio-sauna and steam room. Spa access is included in your stay; only overnight guests can use it, from 9am to 8pm. The heated indoor pool opens earlier, at 7am, with large windows facing the garden.1

Good to know before you book

  • Private dining rooms and panoramic terraces are available for celebrations and receptions; flowers and babysitting can be arranged too. For meetings, the hotel has 8 meeting rooms.12

  • Dogs are welcome for CHF 50 per night. Dogs may join you in the Rucola garden and on a lead in the park; restaurants, the main terrace, spa, pool and Lido are excluded. They must not be left alone in the room.12

  • The SPA & Relax package includes 2 nights in a room with a view, buffet breakfast, a 5-course dinner at Le Relais or Arté al Lago excluding drinks, and a 50-minute massage per person. It also gives 25% off treatments and products at Clarins Beauty Corner and Danilo Hairstyling. It applies to bookings through the hotel’s website.1

Your day

In the morning

Eggs are ordered separately

Breakfast at La Rucola runs from 7am to 10.30am, until 11am at weekends. An egg menu, charged separately, accompanies the buffet.

Before heading out

A walk among the sculptures

In the park I would look for Helidon Xhixha’s Reflexions, in mirror-polished stainless steel. The park is open to visitors.

In the afternoon

The house massage

Villa Castagnola Signature uses warm shea oil and butter on body, head and face. It lasts 70 minutes and costs CHF 180; Clarins Beauty Corner appointments must be booked.

Before dinner

Among banana plants and piano music

For an aperitif, I would sit among the banana plants at Banano Bar. Le Bar also has a fireplace lounge and a piano, and stays open until 1am.

In the evening

Le Relais’ Mediterranean menu

Le Relais serves dinner from 7pm to 9.30pm. Alessandro Boleso’s Mediterranean cooking uses local ingredients; in summer you can choose the panoramic terrace.
