Sandals Caribbean Cay, the former Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, is closed for works and reopens on 18 December 2026: an all-inclusive for couples with a private island and over-water bungalows.
It suits couples who want Jamaica paid in advance, with an island 2 to 5 minutes away by boat and the airport 10 minutes behind them. Anyone who wants to see the new pool, restaurants and rooms before booking may prefer to wait, as so far they exist only in Sandals’ renderings.

I would ask for the Crystal Lagoon Hideaway Swim-up Club Level suite: ground floor, with swim-up pool access from a private patio and a soaking tub for 2.
Prices by stay length
On 8 October 2026 Sandals’ engine gave $856 a night for 3 nights from 18 December, 2 adults (the cheapest total divided by 3), and $1,114 from 30 December. In a Grande Luxe from 18 December, 2 nights cost $3,996 and 3 nights $2,642.
Dinner at Sandals Montego Bay
The restaurants and bars of Sandals Montego Bay, 3.4 km along the coast, are open to guests, with complimentary round-trip transport on select days and hours.
What Sandals Caribbean Cay is
Sandals Caribbean Cay stands on Mahoe Close, east of Montego Bay, 4.4 km from Sangster International Airport on OpenStreetMap’s roads. It traded as Sandals Royal Caribbean until it closed, in October 2025 by its guests’ accounts. Now its official page takes bookings for stays from 18 December 2026, the day Sandals Montego Bay reopens too. The owner’s release of 18 June 2026 puts the works on 3 Jamaican resorts at US$200 million and gives this one 84 more rooms, 291 in all.
What Sandals has published is precise on some things and silent on others. It names 10 places to eat, a new and larger pool, a restaurant called Suppa and a beach club on the island, Parisol; it lists 28 room categories, 15 of them marked «New Room», and prints no floor area for any. Its pictures mix renderings with photographs and are not captioned, under the line «All renderings and product information are subject to change».
So the choice today is a bet on a plan. The parts guests praised before the works are the ones Sandals says it is keeping: the island, the over-water rooms, the butlers. The beach remains a small, sheltered cove and the airport remains 10 minutes away, its aircraft heard outdoors; the rooms are what the works change. Nobody has slept in the new rooms yet, and we have not stayed.

Lumina Guide 2027
Sandals Caribbean Cay, the former Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, is an all-inclusive for couples on a cove 10 minutes from the airport, with a private island reached by boat and over-water bungalows.
What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.
Location
A sheltered cove 4.4 km and about 9 minutes from the airport, with its own island offshore; the beach is small, the water calm, and aircraft are heard outdoors.
Character
A private island and a heart-shaped ring of over-water bungalows, which none of the 4 adults-only resorts we set beside it has; Sandals says no other resort of its own has over-water villas with a pool.
Rooms
28 categories, every one with a king bed for 2 and most with an outdoor tub; Sandals publishes no sizes, and 15 categories are new and as yet unseen.
Food and social life
10 named venues from jerk shack to Indian and Italian, wine and spirits included, and the restaurants of Sandals Montego Bay by shuttle; none has served a guest since the works.
Wellness
A Red Lane Spa charged by the treatment, from $79 for a manicure to $378 for 150 minutes; no size, sauna or steam room is published, and the fitness centre is new.
The stay as a whole
From $856 a night for 2 within a 3-night stay, with meals, drinks, transfers, taxes and tips inside.
The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them
What do Sandals Caribbean Cay’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
Location
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests before the works write about the private island, the 10-minute transfer and a resort small enough to walk from end to end.
Room
6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Every review predates the works: guests write above all about the over-water bungalows and the renovated beachfront rooms.
Staff and service
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests before the works praise butlers and bartenders by name, and write about the free shuttle to the restaurants at Sandals Montego Bay.
Breakfast
6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Reviews describe breakfast as it was before the works: guests write of the buffet at Spices, of breakfast at Bombay and of the one brought to the room.
Price
The bill is all-inclusive: meals, spirits, the minibar, the private island and its boat, airport transfers, taxes and tips. The reviews that discuss it date from before the works.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 6 April 2023 to 30 September 2026. Every review was written before the works, when the resort was Sandals Royal Caribbean: they describe the hotel as it was, which reopens on 18 December 2026 with a new pool, new restaurants and new rooms. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Montego Bay: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 8 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in Montego Bay:
Sandals Montego Bay

Price: for two on the night of 18 December 2026, from $856 (seen on Google Hotels on 8 October 2026).
What to expect
An island reached by water taxi, rooms on stilts over the sea, a new pool known from a rendering, 10 places to eat and a spa by the treatment.
Sandals’ island page puts it 2 minutes away by boat and its activities page 5. The water taxi is included. On the island the owner’s release lists the new Parisol Beach Club, the Jerk Shack, a pool with a swim-up bar and palapas on the sand. The photograph shows the island before the works.
Bungalows and villas stand on stilts off the island, with glass panels in the floor, a soaking tub and a hammock over the sea, a butler and a private boat. For 3 nights from 18 December 2026 a bungalow cost $11,118 for 2.
The official page promises a pool «bigger and bolder», redesigned to give the resort «a lighter, more open feel», and its inclusions list counts 8 pools and 6 whirlpools in all. Hours and water temperature are not published. The picture is a rendering.
The restaurants page names Suppa and Keynote Rum Bar among 10 venues, all included and none needing a reservation. Sandals does not caption its renderings, so we cannot say which venue this one shows.
Treatments are extra: the list for this resort runs from $79 for a manicure to $183 for a 60-minute Lavender Massage and $378 for 150 minutes. Massages can be taken on the beach or on the island. The fitness centre and its classes are included.
Good to know before you book

A short stay can cost more than a long one: on 8 October 2026, 2 nights from 18 December in a Grande Luxe room came to $3,996 for 2 and 3 nights in the same room to $2,642. Source: sandals.com
Between November 2025 and April 2026 guests whose trips were cancelled by the closure wrote that Sandals offered another resort or other dates in place of a refund. Source: 500 Google reviews read, 6 April 2023 to 30 September 2026
The resort is closed. Sandals’ booking check showed 17 December 2026 as unavailable in every category we tried and 18 December as the first night on sale; the Oceanview Butler Suites take arrivals only from 1 June 2027.
Sandals illustrates the pool, the lobby, the restaurants and several new suites with renderings, and captions none of its pictures. Its pages carry the line «All renderings and product information are subject to change».
In the rates read, 2 nights cost more than 3. On 8 October 2026, 2 nights from 18 December in a Grande Luxe room came to $3,996 for 2 and 3 nights in the same room to $2,642.
The airport is 10 minutes away and is heard outdoors: guests before the works describe aircraft from mid-morning until after dark.
Couples only, adults only: every category sleeps 2, and Sandals’ wedding FAQ lets under-18s attend a ceremony only with the general manager’s approval.
The 28 rooms and suites, from poolside rooms to over-water villas
Sangster International Airport is 4.4 km away, about 9 minutes, and the transfer is in the rate.
From Montego Bay airport (MBJ)
4.4 km, about 9 minutes on OpenStreetMap’s roads (11 on a second calculation); Sandals’ arrival page says «just 10 minutes». Guests go to the Sandals lounge at the airport and a shared transfer is included.
From Kingston airport (KIN)
182.6 km, about 3 hours 20 minutes by road. The arrival page says the included transfer also runs from Norman Manley International Airport.
By private car
A private transfer in a luxury car is sold at extra cost to all guests; over-water bungalows and villas include a private BMW from either airport, the room pages say.
Butler suites
Butler-level guests are checked in inside their suite; Club Sandals guests in the Club lounge, everyone else at the front desk.
Check-in and check-out
Check-out is at 11am on the official page, which gives no check-in hour; Google’s listing and Expedia give 3pm. Luggage is held before and after, and a departure lounge has showers.
To the private island
By the resort’s water taxi, included: 2 minutes on one official page, 5 on another.
To Sandals Montego Bay
3.4 km, about 7 minutes by road; the shuttle is included and runs, says that resort’s page, on «select days and hours».
By your own car
Sandals publishes nothing on parking. Google’s listing and Tripadvisor both show free parking; neither is the hotel’s word.

Sandals Caribbean Cay reviews, all from before the works
The platforms’ scores, read on 8 October 2026, and what guests of Sandals Royal Caribbean wrote before it closed.
On 8 October 2026 Google showed 4.4/5 from 2,923 ratings, 71% of them 5 stars, Tripadvisor 4.4/5 from 9,338 reviews and Expedia 8.2/10 from 466. Every stay they describe predates the works: the resort has had no guests since October 2025. Sandals’ own page quotes 8,214 «verified reviews», 84% of them «Very good» or «Excellent». These are guests’ accounts, and we have not stayed.
6 accounts posted on Google between September 2024 and April 2026.
Google
The butlers by name
A couple who stayed for their 25th anniversary a week before the hurricane name both their butlers: attentive without intruding, with surprises left in the room and by the pool. Rooms, food and beach all get full marks.
A guest in October 2024 calls the private island a gem: always a breeze, a pool with a swim-up bar, lunch at the Jerk Shack, dinner at the Thai restaurant, and swimming and kayaking off the deck of an over-water bungalow.
In September 2024 a guest describes aircraft taking off from mid-morning until after dark, audible everywhere outdoors and not in the rooms; another, in September 2025, calls the 10-minute transfer the silver lining.
A July 2025 review says butlers were out at 5am holding beach and pool chairs for their guests, leaving little for the rest, and that the island pool was closed and the over-water rooms under construction without warning.
In May 2025 a couple who booked a poolside garden room write that it was small, «hotel style», and looked onto the drive where the shuttles pulled in; they felt the resort was built round its butler guests.
Between November 2025 and April 2026, 4 guests whose trips fell in the closure write that Sandals offered another resort or other dates, and in one case $250 towards a new booking, where they wanted their money back.
An all-inclusive beach resort for couples on Mahoe Close, Montego Bay, Jamaica, owned by Sandals Resorts and known until 2025 as Sandals Royal Caribbean. Its official page is titled «Formerly Sandals Royal Caribbean», and Google lists it as «Sandals Jamaica Caribbean Cay», a 5-star hotel. A private island lies a short boat ride offshore, with over-water bungalows and villas beside it.
The owner’s release of 18 June 2026 gives 291 rooms after the works, 84 of them new. By the owner’s own figures the resort had 207 rooms before the works, since the 84 new ones bring it to 291, according to the release, read on 15 October 2026.
Is Sandals Royal Caribbean closed, and when does it reopen?
Yes. The official page says the resort «is temporarily closed while the resort is being reimagined» and «officially reopens on December 18, 2026, the same day as Sandals Montego Bay». On 8 October 2026 Sandals’ availability check returned 17 December as unavailable in each category we tried and 18 December as the first night on sale.
Sandals’ pages do not say why it closed. A travel agency’s release of 30 June 2026 says the 3 resorts shut after Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica in October 2025, and guests’ reviews from November 2025 onwards say the same.
What changes with the works?
The official page names a larger, redesigned main pool, a restaurant called Suppa and a beach club on the private island, Parisol. The owner’s release adds an open-air lobby looking over the pool to the sea, Keynote Rum Bar, the grab-and-go Heart & Sol, a fitness centre with sea views, 12 SkyPool Suites, new swim-up suites and «elevated» over-water villas.
One category is late: the Oceanview Butler Suites are sold «for arrivals as of June 1, 2027». The plans are illustrated with renderings, and Sandals warns that renderings and product information may change.
How much does a night at Sandals Caribbean Cay cost?
Sandals’ own availability check, read on 8 October 2026 for 2 adults, priced the cheapest room on sale at $856 a night for 3 nights from 18 December 2026, the reopening, $1,114 from 30 December, over New Year’s Eve, $983 from 13 January 2027, $1,052 from 10 February, $1,000 from 10 March, $929 from 12 May and $856 from 15 September. Each figure is the 3-night total divided by 3.
The rate is all-inclusive: meals, drinks, airport transfers and, in the words of the official inclusions list, «all taxes and gratuities». Google Hotels carried no amount for any of the 115 nights from 9 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, so there is no second source to set beside Sandals’ own.
Can you book one or two nights?
The terms and conditions require a minimum of 2 nights, and the short stay is dear. Read on 8 October 2026, a single night on 18 December in the entry room came to $1,886 for 2; 2 nights in a Grande Luxe room to $3,996, and 3 nights in the same room to $2,642. The discounted rate starts at the third night.
The same terms ask a deposit of $400 a room, charge 50% of the price for a cancellation 45 to 31 days before arrival and 100% from 30 days, and say holiday periods may carry other rules.
What does the all-inclusive cover, and what is extra?
According to the resort’s inclusions list: breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, spirits, 6 Robert Mondavi wines, a minibar with wine and local beer, the private island and its water taxi, scuba for certified divers, snorkelling, Hobie Cats, paddleboards and kayaks, land sports, the fitness centre, entertainment, Wi-Fi, airport transfers, taxes and gratuities.
Extra, says the brand’s FAQ: spa treatments, tours, scuba courses, gift-shop purchases, telephone calls and a doctor’s consultation. Tipping is forbidden except to butlers. The terms add that optional check-out fees may appear on the bill, a $2 Tourism Enhancement Fund or a $3 Climate Resilience Levy a room a night.
Which restaurants and bars will there be?
The restaurants page lists 10: Parisol at the island’s beach club, Strand for seafood by the shore, Suppa for Jamaican dishes to share, The Jerk Shack, Tesoro for southern Italian pasta and pizza from a stone oven, Bombay for Indian food, Cricketer’s Pub, the deli Heart & Sol, Blum Coffee and Keynote Rum Bar, with small plates and more than 30 rums. All are marked casual and «No Reservation Required», Keynote «resort casual».
The counts do not agree. The home page says «10 Restaurants, 5 Bars» in one place and «nine restaurants and five bars» in another, and Google’s description still gives 8. The island page still describes a Royal Thai restaurant that the new list omits and guests of 2024 and 2025 liked; whether it returns is not stated.
What is the dress code at dinner?
«Resort casual by day, resort elegant by night», says the arrival page. The brand’s FAQ defines the 2: by day shorts, jeans and T-shirts, with swimwear covered; for «resort evening», trousers or jeans and a shirt for men, and no shorts, T-shirts, trainers, flip-flops or caps. Every venue on this resort’s list is marked casual or resort casual.
What are the rooms and suites, and how big are they?
The official catalogue has 28 categories, each with a king bed for 2 guests: 4 at the Sandals Luxury level, 11 with Club Sandals concierge service, 11 with a butler and 2 over the water. Most have a soaking tub for 2 on the balcony or patio; some open onto a swim-up pool, some have a private pool, and the SkyPool suites carry theirs on the balcony of floors 5 to 7.
Sandals publishes no floor area for any category, on the catalogue or on the room pages, so we give none. 15 categories are marked «New Room» and have never had a guest, and Sandals does not say which room pictures are photographs and which are renderings.
What are the over-water bungalows and villas like, and what do they cost?
They stand on stilts off the private island: hardwood floors, glass panels to watch the water underneath, a soaking tub and a hammock over the sea, an outdoor shower, 24-hour room service and a butler. The villa adds a private infinity pool. Guests get a private boat to the mainland and a BMW from the airport. The brand’s over-water page says only this resort has over-water villas with a pool.
On 8 October 2026 a bungalow for 3 nights from 18 December 2026 was priced at $11,118 for 2, about $3,706 a night, and the «from» rate on its page was $1,846 a person a night. A guest in July 2025 found the over-water rooms under construction; the owner’s release calls the villas «elevated» and says no more.
What is the private island, and how do you get there?
A small island off the resort’s beach, which the owner’s release calls Sandals Cay, reached by an included water taxi: 2 minutes by the island page, 5 by the activities page. The reopening plans include the Parisol Beach Club and its restaurant, the Jerk Shack, a pool with a swim-up bar and palapas on the sand; the official page says the island is «not just intact, it’s been enhanced».
Private cabanas with a concierge are an extra. Guests before the works describe a clothing-optional beach on the island; Sandals’ pages do not mention one.
Is there a beach, and what is the sea like?
Sandals describes the beach as «2 secluded coves», and its pictures show a crescent of sand sheltered by stone jetties, with gazebos at their ends. Snorkelling and its equipment, Hobie Cats, kayaks and paddleboards are included; waterskiing is at Sandals Montego Bay, transfer included.
Guests before the works describe a small beach and calm water, with the reef keeping the waves away. Many spent their beach time on the island.
How many pools are there, and are they heated?
The official inclusions list counts «eight pools and six whirlpools», and the reopening adds the redesigned main pool with a swim-up bar, the island’s pool and the pools that swim-up suites open onto. Private pools belong to the SkyPool suites, 2 Beachside suites, one Beachfront suite category and the over-water villas.
Sandals publishes neither opening hours nor water temperatures, and does not say whether the count of 8 is the old resort’s or the new one’s.
Is there a spa, and is it included?
There is a Red Lane Spa, and treatments are paid for. The list for this resort, read on 8 October 2026, gives $183 for a 60-minute Lavender Massage and $224 for 90 minutes, $206 for a 60-minute Deep Relief or Himalayan Salt Stone Massage, $183 for a Tropical Glow Facial and $79 for a manicure. Massages are also given on the beach and on the island.
Sandals does not publish the spa’s size, its number of rooms or whether it has a sauna or steam room; Google’s listing shows a sauna, which is not the hotel’s word. No spa day pass is published. Outside guests can buy a resort pass, per the brand’s FAQ: $180 a person from 10am to 6pm, $180 from 6pm to 2am or $340 for both.
Is it adults-only, and couples-only?
Both. The terms state that «Sandals is an adult only resort» with rates based on double occupancy, the brand’s FAQ that «only couples may stay at Sandals», and every category at this resort sleeps 2. The wedding FAQ treats anyone under 18 as a child: children may attend a ceremony only with the general manager’s approval, arriving 30 minutes before and leaving straight after.
How far is the airport, and is the transfer included?
Sangster International Airport is 4.4 km away, about 9 minutes on OpenStreetMap’s roads; Sandals says 10 minutes. A shared round-trip transfer is included, with a Sandals lounge at the airport, and the official page says it runs from Kingston’s airport too, 182.6 km and more than 3 hours away.
With the airport this close, aircraft are heard outdoors through the day, as several guests before the works mention.
Is there parking?
Sandals’ pages say nothing about parking: the stay is sold with airport transfers and the resort assumes guests arrive on them. Google’s listing shows free self and valet parking and Tripadvisor «free parking», both unconfirmed by the hotel. Anyone driving a hire car is relying on those 2 listings.
Can you use Sandals Montego Bay as well?
Yes: «Stay at 1, Play at 2». Guests may eat and drink at Sandals Montego Bay, 3.4 km and about 7 minutes along the coast, with included transport that its own page limits to «select days and hours». That resort reopens on the same day with a redesigned pool and 3 new restaurants, Scrimshaw, Buccan and Bay Roc Rum Club.
Can you get married at Sandals Caribbean Cay?
Yes. A beach ceremony is offered at every Sandals and gazebos at most, the venues page says, and this resort’s pictures show gazebos on its jetties. The couple must marry where they stay, with one exception the wedding FAQ spells out: guests of Sandals Caribbean Cay may use the Frank Warren Chapel at Sandals Montego Bay.
The marriage licence and administrative fee in Jamaica is $250, the wedding deposit $250, and the certificate arrives in 6 to 8 weeks. Package prices are quoted on request.
What happens on New Year’s Eve?
On 8 October 2026 Sandals had published no New Year’s Eve programme, gala dinner or supplement for this resort. The plan includes restaurant meals, but confirms no particular gala dinner; the one dinner with a published price is the private candlelight dinner, $199 a couple with few seatings each evening.
The price of the date is published, though: 3 nights from 30 December 2026 started at $3,341 for 2.
In the 500 most recent Google reviews with text, butlers are named again and again by guests discussing staff and facilities. Of the rooms as they were, guests praise the over-water bungalows and the renovated beachfront ones above all. Those whose trips were cancelled by the closure, between November 2025 and April 2026, write that Sandals offered another resort or other dates in place of a refund.
Is it in the hurricane belt, and what if a storm hits?
Yes, and by the agency release and guests’ accounts quoted above a hurricane is why it is closed. For travel between August and October 2026 Sandals’ booking promise included a limited weather protection plan at no charge, covering disruption on the journey to and from the resort; a fuller travel protection plan is sold at $140 an adult, $150 from 21 December to 2 January.
The terms say the hotel is not liable for hurricanes and other acts of God. Guests whose stays were cancelled after October 2025 write that they were offered other resorts or dates.
Are there offers for the reopening?
On 8 October 2026 the official page carried «The Great Jamaica Comeback Sale», worded as a saving of up to $1,500, an air credit of up to $500 and a free excursion, «limited time», and a $100 credit for booking online. The booking promise says the engine applies every combinable offer by itself and that Sandals will match a lower price found elsewhere, so the stay prices we read already carried whatever applied that day.
Is scuba diving really included?
For certified divers, yes: the scuba page allows up to 2 tanks a day, every day but the day of departure, with boat, guide, tanks, regulators, fins and masks. A certification card is needed. Courses, the introductory dive for beginners, night dives and wreck dives cost extra.
Is golf included?
Green fees are, at Upton Estate Golf & Country Club in Ocho Rios, for guests of every Sandals in Jamaica; the golf page lists free transfers only from the 3 Ocho Rios resorts, and caddies are mandatory and paid. Dunn’s River Falls, in Ocho Rios, is 87.6 km from this resort, about 102 minutes by road.
