Which rooms are quiet at a luxury city hotel

In Paris I would request Plaza Athénée’s Superior Room, listed with a “Quiet inner courtyard view”: $2,406 a night for 15 to 18 March 2027. One guest wrote in 2024: “Request one facing the courtyard for quiet.”

Chosen your hotel? Everything you need to go

8 hotels, from the firmest answer to the thinnest

At 5 hotels I would ask for a side or a floor. At Rosewood London, The Langham and Hotel de Russie the reports settle no side, and I say what to ask instead.

A bedroom with a bed, wall-mounted television and a pale armchair beside the window

Hôtel Plaza Athénée

For a light sleeper in Paris who wants the quiet side written on the room’s page, and it is the one I would book.

The trade-off

You swap Avenue Montaigne for an inner courtyard, and one guest5 heard a party through “paper thin walls”.

Why choose it

The Superior Room1 measures 30 m², and its page lists a “Quiet inner courtyard view”. Get the room confirmed. The Deluxe Room2 looks over La Cour Jardin instead, the courtyard where the hotel serves food in spring and summer and sets up an ice rink in winter3. One guest wrote in May 20244: “Superior room is comfortable and elegant. Request one facing the courtyard for quiet.” Another wrote in September 20255 of “paper thin walls” and a party next door, without naming the room. For 15 to 18 March 2027 this room costs $2,4066 a night on the Daily Rate, with free cancellation up to noon the day before, and $2,046 on Plan in Advance, 15% off, so read that rate’s terms. A night for 2 costs $2,4437 from online sellers and $2,047 direct.

Bedroom with a white bed, mirrors and tall windows

Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel

For a stay on Place de la Concorde with a window on the pedestrian street, if you will get the side confirmed in writing.

The trade-off

You have to ask, because a Premier Room can land on either side8 and a Deluxe Room looks onto the courtyards9.

Why choose it

The hotel calls Rue Boissy d’Anglas8 a “quiet pedestrian street”, and Premier Rooms, on floors 1 to 6, face either it or an inner courtyard. One guest wrote in March 202310: “We had a room facing the US embassy so it was very quiet.” That should be the same side. Another compared 2 stays in a review from 202011. In first-floor courtyard room 127, “The noise from the courtyard bar outside flows freely into the room”, and third-floor street-facing suite 315 was “perfectly sound-insulated”. The courtyard has a defender too: in July 2026 a guest in the Marie-Antoinette Suite12 called it “cool, silent, entirely removed from the city”. I would still ask for the street. A night for 2 costs $1,88113 from online sellers and $2,192 direct.

Superior Room at Claridge’s

Claridge’s

For Mayfair, and it is the one I would book in London: a courtyard room, which should sit away from the works on Brook Street.

The trade-off

The courtyard has its own trouble: one guest22 in the Georgian wing blamed lights across it for a sleepless stay.

Why choose it

Works opposite the hotel are the first thing to know. A guest who stayed in March 2025 was “woken up every morning by trucks and construction noise/drilling”14, and the general manager’s reply placed the work “opposite the hotel on Brook Street”. In September 2026 another guest15 wrote: “There is a huge construction site and noise in front of the hotel”. Ask when it ends. The Superior Room16, 35 m², and the Mayfair Room17, 40 m², list “Courtyard” as their view. The Claridge’s Room18 can look on Davies Street, the courtyard, Brook’s Mews or Brook Street, so ask before you take one. In May 2025 one guest19 got “the quiet room location” they had asked for, in March 2026 another20, on the mezzanine level, wrote “it was very quiet”, and in November 2025 a third21 lay “next to two service doors”. A courtyard can cost you the view: in December 2025 one guest23 wrote that theirs “didn't have much of a view or natural light”. A night for 2 costs $1,59024, the same direct.

A Deluxe Room with the bed, a table for 2 and a window with a pale curtain

Orient Express La Minerva

For Rome, and it is the one I would book there: a Deluxe Room on the piazza, in a hotel that opened in April 202525.

The trade-off

This rests on 1 writer in 1 room, and some Deluxe Rooms26 look elsewhere.

Why choose it

Some Deluxe Rooms26, about 35 m², overlook the Pantheon and Piazza della Minerva, which the hotel calls quiet27. The writer from Yolo Journal28, in room 104 on the first floor with a piazza view, called it “surprisingly quiet and peaceful” in June 2025. In 140 Google reviews since April 2025 nobody complains of noise from the piazza, and one guest30 was woken early by staff over a faulty alarm. Before the renovation, one guest wrote in June 201929: “Having a room facing the Piazza could be a little noisy at times but it worked for me.” A night for 2 costs $1,27731.

Rosewood London’s entrance courtyard seen through the wrought-iron gates: the pale stone Edwardian façade and 2 potted trees

Rosewood London

For Holborn, if what your neighbours do matters more to you than which way the window faces.

The trade-off

Nobody names a quiet side here, so ask about the rooms next door.

Why choose it

One guest32 wrote in May 2025: “Quiet rooms to little or no street or city noise.” Another33, in February 2024, said the room “felt private and soundproof”. The room complaints come from inside the hotel: a room “located next to the event venue”34 in December 2023, and one “close to three support rooms”35 in July 2023. So I would ask for a room away from both. The building next door is the other thing to ask about: in December 2025 a guest36 had a view of “AC units and construction next door”, and in February 2026 another37 noted “Little noise from the construction nearby”. The courtyard38 holds a summer terrace and a smoking area open 24 hours. A night for 2 costs $81839 from online sellers and $897 direct.

A Superior Room: a king bed, large windows onto a bright courtyard, an armchair and a desk

The Langham, London

For the top of Regent Street at the lowest price on this page, if you can live with a room you may want to change.

The trade-off

Guests disagree about which side is quiet, so ask to move on the first night if yours is not.

Why choose it

Superior Rooms40 come with a courtyard or city view, Deluxe Rooms41 with a courtyard or street view, and the Classic Room42 with “limited natural daylight and obstructed views”. On the inner side, a guest in August 202643 heard “the constant sound of the flags moving and hitting against their poles in the inner courtyard” and advised “an exterior-facing room”, and another in September 202644 heard “a terrace bar in a neighboring courtyard that can be quite loud in good weather (open until 10p)”. A third, in November 202245, called the inner courtyard very calm, and my own Langham page48 calls courtyard rooms the quietest, “except on ballroom party nights”. On the outer side, a corner room46 over Regent Street and Cavendish Place was “quiet from street traffic” in August 2025, with the pub below until 11pm and a “faint rumble of the subway” until about 1am. A 4th-floor guest47, side unknown, heard vehicles on the street at night and called it “surprisingly noisy” in January 2024. The ballroom is real: in November 2024 one guest49 wrote that “the walls and light fixtures were trembling in our room”, and another50 had “a sleepless night”. So I can give you no side. Ask whether a party is booked for your dates and which rooms sit furthest from the ballroom. A night for 2 costs $65051 from online sellers and $686 direct.

A bedroom with a bed and windows opening onto a balcony

Cheval Blanc Paris

For the Seine and the rooftops, if you choose your floor as carefully as your view.

The trade-off

The Balcony Junior Suite sits on the 6th floor52, right below the restaurants.

Why choose it

Langosteria53 and, in summer, Le Jardin54 are on the 7th floor. In August 2025 a guest in room 60655, a Balcony Junior Suite, wrote that staff moved furniture up there after closing and “we couldn't fall asleep” until past 2am. In June 2026 another56 wrote: “Don’t stay on the 6th floor.” Both wrote in summer, so I can’t say the noise holds in March. The street is the second problem. One guest57 wrote in July 2022 that “Apparently, the rooms facing the street can be noisy”, another58 in October 2026 that “the street is noisy”, and a third59 heard “ambulance sirens throughout the night” in September 2026 without naming a side. If that is the quay, a room away from it gives up the Seine, so ask which side faces the road, and ask for a floor below the 6th. A night for 2 costs $2,28460 from online sellers and $2,328 direct.

The Stravinskij Bar courtyard by day: wrought-iron tables and chairs with pale blue cushions, cream parasols and small trees in terracotta pots on the cobbles; the counter under its awning at the back, a balustraded staircase and an ivy-covered wall on the left

Hotel de Russie

For the garden and Piazza del Popolo, if a late evening under your window does not trouble you.

The trade-off

You pay more for the garden view, and one guest63 calls it the noisy side.

Why choose it

The hotel sells city, garden and inner-courtyard views61: the Superior Room faces the city, and the Deluxe Room the city or the courtyard. The Stravinskij Bar62 sits around an open-air piazzetta and opens from 10am to 1am. In May 2026 a guest on level 563 wrote: “Facing the garden you will be exposed to the excessive noise till late hours of the night.” In December 2019 another64 found that “the windows to yard are sealed so no noise from out side”. BusinessClass66 says garden views do not guarantee quiet, and on October dates it found the Superior Garden View €230 a night dearer than the Superior. A third65, during garden works in February 2020, wrote “book a room not from the garden side”. So I can give you no side: ask how far the room sits from the bar, and for sleep in Rome I would look at La Minerva first. A night for 2 costs $1,96967 from online sellers and $2,275 direct.

A night for 2 on a 7-night stay from 15 March 2027, with taxes; the room I point to may cost more. The Superior Room’s $2,406 and $2,046 include taxes and fees. Prices from Google Hotels, 13 October 2026, and the hotel’s booking page, 31 October 2026.

What decides whether you sleep

The word courtyard promises less than it sounds, so I look at 4 things before the view.

  • Look at what sits under or beside you. At the Crillon11 one guest blamed “the courtyard bar outside”, and at Bulgari Hotel Roma68 another, in room 434 “directly below from their rooftop bar”, wrote in June 2026 that the noise stopped around 3am.

  • Find out what the word courtyard means at that hotel. Plaza Athénée1 lists a “Quiet inner courtyard view” on one room and La Cour Jardin2 on another, and the second3 holds a restaurant in summer and an ice rink in winter.

  • Treat a high floor as no guarantee. One guest could not sleep on level 5 at Hotel de Russie63, and at Cheval Blanc56 the 6th floor sits under the 7th-floor restaurants.

  • Ask what is being built this year. Works come and go, so read the last 3 months of reviews. At Claridge’s the hotel placed them opposite, on Brook Street14, in April 2025, and in February 2026 a guest at The Ritz London69 wrote: “Loud building works taking place on the hotel, this was so loud we couldn’t sleep.”

What to ask the hotel

Ask in writing before you arrive.

Once you have booked, send 3 questions: which way the room faces, what sits above and below it, and whether works are planned for your dates. At Claridge’s19 one guest got the location they asked for. At Bulgari Hotel Roma68 the guest in room 434 says the hotel knew “the room had a noise problem in the past”.

Speak up on the first night too. Claridge’s general manager14 wrote in April 2025 that he regretted not moving that guest “to another part of the hotel”. Some noise you will not find on any plan: I left The Savoy off this list because I could not place its quiet side, and one guest in room 36471 wrote in September 2024 of “a bottle truck” at 6.30am and a church bell every hour. At Cheval Blanc55 the guest in room 606 was handed ear plugs the following night, so pack your own.

Questions light sleepers ask

Courtyards, high floors, rooftop bars and what you can book.

Which rooms are quiet at a luxury city hotel?

Usually the ones away from the hotel’s own bars, restaurants and service doors. Plaza Athénée1 and Claridge’s16 put a courtyard view on the room page, so I would start there. At the Crillon8 I would ask for Rue Boissy d’Anglas.

Is a courtyard room quieter than a street room?

It depends on what stands in the courtyard. One guest at the Crillon12 found the courtyard “cool, silent”, and another11 lost sleep to the bar in it. At the Langham43 flags on their poles kept one guest awake.

Does a high floor solve it?

A high floor doesn’t solve it by itself. One guest could not sleep on level 5 at Hotel de Russie63, one on the Langham47’s 4th floor still heard vehicles at night, and one on the 6th floor of The Ritz London70 still heard car horns.

Should I avoid the floor under a rooftop bar?

I would. The guest in room 434 at Bulgari Hotel Roma68 was told the bar ends at 1am and heard noise until around 3am. At Cheval Blanc55 the guest in room 606 heard furniture moving until past 2am, after the 7th floor had closed.

Can I book the quiet side, or only ask for it?

You still ask. Plaza Athénée1 lists that view for the Superior Room, though one guest4 advised requesting it, and Claridge’s lists the courtyard for its Superior16 and Mayfair17 rooms. At the Crillon8 and the Langham40 the same category can face either way. Get the answer in writing.

Which quiet room would you book in London and in Rome?

In London, Claridge’s Superior Room16, on its courtyard, from $1,59024 a night. In Rome, a Deluxe Room on the piazza at La Minerva26, from $1,27731, and that choice rests on 1 writer28. Either room may cost more.
