Eden Rock suits couples and families who want to walk out to St Jean’s shops and bars and dine among islanders. For a holiday built around a shared swimming pool, I would choose another base.

Our verdict

The rock and its red roofs at dawn under an orange and pink sky, with a small aeroplane crossing above the bay.

Eden Rock is a rocky promontory in the middle of the Baie de St Jean, on the north coast of Saint-Barthélemy, with white sand on both sides. Rémy de Haenen, the aviator who first landed a plane on the grass at St Jean, built a hotel on it in 1953; the Matthews family bought it in 1995 and Oetker Hotels has managed it since 2014. Hurricane Irma closed it in September 2017, and it reopened in 2019 after a 2-year rebuild: 37 rooms, suites and villas, each different from the next.

It is a hotel to be seen in as much as to rest in. The Sand Bar, run to Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s menus, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on the beach to guests and islanders alike; the Rémy Bar becomes a red-curtained club at 6pm; Nikki Beach is a 3-minute walk along the same bay. The rate covers breakfast, loungers on the sand, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling gear and a car to and from the plane or the ferry.

Anyone after quiet or a large spa will be happier elsewhere. The hotel has no shared pool, the spa is 3 cabins and a beach cabana, and it shuts from the end of August to mid-October. The booking engine asked €1,700 to €4,900 a night for the cheapest room left on the 9 stays we read, sold by stays of 2 to 5 nights at least, with several winter weeks already gone. Many Google reviews are written by people who came to eat, and they praise the welcome from the floor staff, the cocktails and tables a step from the water.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

Eden Rock is Saint-Barthélemy’s first hotel, built in 1953 on a rock between the 2 beaches of the Baie de St Jean: 37 rooms, suites and villas, 5 minutes by car from the airport.

How we choose the hotels

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

On the beach of St Jean, 5 minutes from the airport and 7 from Gustavia, with shops and Nikki Beach on foot; the sea in front has a reef to snorkel.

  2. Character

The first hotel on the island, on its own rock, with about 400 works of art and a founder who was a pilot: nowhere else on St Barths has this story.

  3. Rooms

23 kinds of room, from 54 m² to a 1,600 m² villa, all rebuilt for 2019; 14 have a pool or plunge pool, and no 2 are alike.

  4. Food and social life

One restaurant on the sand with a famous name behind it, 2 bars and a club; visitors praise the lobster salad, the cocktails and tables a step from the water.

  5. Wellness

3 treatment cabins, a beach cabana, a gym open 6.30am to 10pm and yoga on a deck; no shared pool, sauna or steam room is published.

  6. The stay as a whole

€1,700 to €4,900 a night with breakfast and transfers on the stays read; a 5% local tax on top, and minimum stays of 2 to 5 nights.

What makes it rare

A badge is an experience travellers look for, that is really here and that few hotels in the guide have.

What the badges are

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Eden Rock’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests describe the rock on St Jean beach, the view over the bay and tables a step from the water.

  2. Room

There are 23 kinds of room, from 54 m² to a 1,600 m² villa, all rebuilt for 2019; 14 have a private pool or plunge pool.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the welcome from the floor staff, the cocktails and, at the Sand Bar, the lobster salad.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is served facing the sea and is open to non-residents too: a visitor paid €75 for it in December 2025.

  5. Price

The bill comes up chiefly over the table and the spa: in December 2025 breakfast cost a visitor €75, and a 60-minute massage starts at €190.

The scores come from 195 Google reviews with text, left from 4 January 2020 to 2 October 2026. Only reviews written since January 2020: the hotel reopened in 2019, rebuilt after Hurricane Irma. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay on St Barths: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 8 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against on St Barths:

  • Cheval Blanc St-Barth
  • Airelles Le Guanahani
  • Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa
  • Le Sereno
  • Hôtel Le Toiny

Price: for two on the night of 1 August 2027, from €1,700 (seen on Google Hotels on 8 October 2026).

What to expect

A restaurant on the sand, a beach with loungers and a raft, a small spa inside the rock, a red bar that turns into a club, and an arrival by small plane.

The Sand Bar

The hotel’s restaurant stands on the beach, open to the bay. Breakfast is from 7.30 to 9.30am, lunch from noon to 3.30pm and dinner from 7 to 10pm, every day, to menus by Jean-Georges Vongerichten; the kitchen works behind glass, a guest of September 2026 noted.

The beach and the Beach Bar

Loungers on the sand, kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment are part of the room rate. The Beach Bar serves drinks and light lunches from its deck, 10am to 5pm on its online menu, and a floating raft is moored off the beach.

Eden Spa

The spa is inside the top of the rock: a sitting room fitted like a yacht and 3 cabins, plus 2 massage tables under white drapes on the beach. It opens from 10am to 8pm; a 60-minute massage starts at €190 and a Dr. Sturm facial costs €230.

Rémy Bar and Rémy’s Club

Named after the founder, the sea-facing bar and salon serves from 7.30am to 6pm. At 6pm the room behind the red velvet curtains opens as Rémy’s Club, with cocktails and small plates until midnight.

The last hop

You reach St Barths through a larger airport: St Maarten, Antigua, San Juan or Pointe-à-Pitre, then a small plane, or the ferry from St Maarten; the hotel’s rate includes meeting you at St Maarten and driving you from the airstrip or the harbour.

Good to know before you book

  • On 8 October 2026 the hotel was closed: the first night on sale was 18 October 2026, the last 30 August 2027, and every night from 20 December to 5 January showed as unavailable. Source: oetkerhotels.com

  • Rooms sleep 2 adults and there is no kids’ club: families take a suite with a sofa bed, the Howard Hughes suite or a beach house. Source: oetkerhotels.com

  • The hotel is closed as this is written. Its booking engine, read on 8 October 2026, sells no night before 18 October 2026 and none after 30 August 2027, and every night from 20 December to 5 January showed as unavailable.

  • There is no swimming pool for all guests, the hotel’s own Q&A says. You swim in the sea, or in the private pool, plunge pool or hot tub that comes with 14 of the 23 kinds of room; the 6 rooms of the first category have none except the Captains Room.

  • Stays are sold by a minimum of 2 to 5 nights, 4 on most dates. A 30% deposit is taken at booking, the balance is charged 45 days before arrival and from then nothing is refunded; the Q&A page still writes 90 days.

  • The engine prints prices «Including Taxes & Fees», yet the rate’s own conditions add a 5% local tax, billed on departure. Pets up to 7 kg cost €80 a day.

  • The restaurant and bars are a meeting place for the island, and most recent Google reviews are by visitors who came for a meal. There is a beach club next door and small planes land at the end of the bay.

Questions before you book

What travellers ask before choosing Eden Rock, answered from the sources read on 8 October 2026.

What kind of hotel is Eden Rock - St Barths?

A 5-star beach hotel of 37 rooms, suites and villas on a rocky promontory in the Baie de St Jean, on the north coast of Saint-Barthélemy in the French West Indies. It was the first hotel on the island: Rémy de Haenen built it in 1953, the history page says, and Howard Hughes and Greta Garbo were among its early guests.

David and Jane Matthews have owned it since 1995, and Oetker Hotels, the group of Le Bristol in Paris and the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, has managed it since 2014. After Hurricane Irma it was rebuilt for 2 years and reopened in 2019, with 3 more rooms and suites added in 2020. The hotel’s Q&A gives the address as St Jean Bay, 97133 St Barthélemy.

What are the rooms like, and how big are they?

No 2 are the same. The official list has 23 kinds: 6 rooms of 54 to 102 m², 13 suites of 84 to 249 m² and 4 beach houses and villas of 179 to 1,600 m², set on the rock, along the beach or in the gardens. Every one has a king bed, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a Nespresso machine, a minibar and Dr. Sturm toiletries.

The rooms on the rock look straight down on the sea; the Plantation Rooms face the lawn. Most are for 2 adults, and families are sent to the suites with a sofa bed or a second bedroom and to the beach houses. On the nights we read, a Heavenly Beach House cost €8,500, Beach House Frangipani €8,500 to €11,000 and Villa Nina €22,000 a night.

Where is it, and is it quiet?

In St Jean, in the middle of the north coast, on the bay the airport’s runway runs down to. The hotel’s own description is that guests stroll to the shops, bars and restaurants of the village; Nikki Beach is 189 m away, Gustavia 2.8 km and 7 minutes by car, calculated on OpenStreetMap’s roads.

Quiet is not what it sells: the Sand Bar and the bars draw people from across the island, there is a beach club next door and small planes land at the end of the bay.

How do you get to Eden Rock?

By a larger airport first. The hotel’s own page lists St Maarten, Antigua, San Juan and Pointe-à-Pitre, with onward flights on St Barth Commuter, Air Antilles, Winair or Tradewind, private charters, or the Voyager and Great Bay Express ferries from St Maarten. St Barth Commuter puts the flight from St Maarten at 15 minutes and asks for 1 hour 15 minutes between planes; Tradewind flies from San Juan in about 1 hour.

St Barths’ airstrip is at the western end of the hotel’s own bay, 0.8 km away in a straight line and 2 km by road, 5 minutes by car. The ferries take 45 minutes from Philipsburg or 1 hour from Marigot to Gustavia, according to the island’s travel portal, and Great Bay Express wants passengers at its office 45 minutes ahead. A car from the hotel meets either, and that transfer is in the room rate.

Is there parking?

Yes: valet parking for all guests, says the hotel’s Q&A, which publishes no charge for it; Google lists the parking as free. A visitor of April 2026 points out that the island has no ride-hailing app; from June to August 2027 the booking engine sold a «Summer Package» with a small car included for €50 a night more.

Is the hotel on the beach, and can you swim?

It is on the sand. The rock divides the beach of St Jean in 2, and the rate includes loungers, kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment, on the booking engine. The Beach Bar has a sundeck and a floating raft offshore, and the hotel describes a coral reef round the rock where it is replanting coral.

The beach is shared with the rest of the bay, Nikki Beach included, and the hotel nowhere calls it private. A family of July 2023 found small waves, warm clear water and very little seaweed; a guest of February 2023 warns of sargassum in the bay.

Does Eden Rock have a swimming pool?

Not one for every guest. «There is no public swimming pool», the hotel’s Q&A states, although Google’s listing shows a pool and a hot tub among the amenities. The pools belong to the accommodation: 14 of the 23 kinds have a private pool, a plunge pool or a hot tub, from the Captains Room to the 20-metre pool of Villa Rockstar.

If a pool matters and the budget stops at the first category, the Captains Room is the only one of those 6 with water of its own.

Are the private pools heated?

The hotel says so for 2 of them: the freshwater pool of the Premium Suite Fregate and the pool of the Beach House Frangipani are described as heated. For the others no temperature is published. They are in use whenever the hotel is open, from mid-October to the end of August.

Where do you eat, and at what hours?

At the Sand Bar, on the beach, with menus by Jean-Georges Vongerichten: breakfast from 7.30 to 9.30am, lunch from noon to 3.30pm, dinner from 7 to 10pm, daily. The Rémy Bar & Salon serves from 7.30am to 6pm, then Rémy’s Club takes over until midnight; the Beach Bar does drinks and light lunches, and there is room service and a takeaway counter, Eden to Go.

Tables are booked online or by e-mail, and visitors are welcome: one paid €75 for breakfast in December 2025. Those who write about it praise the lobster salad, the cocktails and the welcome from the floor staff.

Is breakfast included, and is there half board?

Breakfast is in the rate: the booking engine sells a «Best Available Bed and Breakfast Rate» with daily breakfast for the room at the Sand Bar. No half board, full board or all-inclusive plan was on sale on any of the 22 stays we asked for; lunch, dinner and drinks are paid as you go.

What is the spa like?

Small. Eden Spa & Wellbeing is inside the top of the rock: a sitting room styled as a yacht and 3 treatment cabins, on the wellness page, plus a cabana on the beach with 2 massage tables, which the hotel’s page calls the Sun Spa. Around it are the Boat Room for skin and scalp treatments, a medi-spa with body-sculpting machines, the gym and a yoga deck facing the sea.

The hotel publishes no floor area for the spa and mentions no sauna, steam room or pool. Treatments can also be given in certain suites.

Is the spa included, and can outside guests use it?

The gym is: access to it is listed in the room rate. Treatments are charged, and the spa’s online shop lists and sells treatments publicly. For yoga the wellness page has one entry for hotel and villa guests and another for outside guests, and the brochure prices a group class at €50.

No day pass is published, and with no shared pool or thermal area there would be little for one to open.

When is the spa open, and do you need to book?

The spa, the Boat Room and the wellness studio open daily from 10am to 8pm, and the gym from 6.30am to 10pm. With 3 cabins, treatments are by appointment, online or through the spa’s e-mail address.

Which treatments are there, and at what price?

Massages with Ligne St Barth oils, made on the island, start at €190 for 60 minutes and reach €260 for 90, on the spa’s booking page; a Dr. Sturm facial of 60 minutes is €230. In the Boat Room a 25-minute Korean lift or scalp treatment costs €130 and a 45-minute exosome facial €270.

The wellness brochure lists private yoga, reiki or meditation at €160 an hour and a sound healing session at €200; personal training is €170 an hour in the fitness brochure.

Are children and pets welcome?

Children of all ages are, the hotel’s Q&A says. There is no kids’ club; the guest relations team arranges swimming, surf and tennis lessons, yoga or painting, and cots are provided on request. Rooms sleep 2 adults, so families take a suite with a sofa bed, the Howard Hughes suite or a beach house.

Pets of up to 7 kg are accepted for €80 a day, with treats and their own menu at the Sand Bar or by room service.

What else is there, and is there Wi-Fi?

A boutique and an art collection of about 400 pieces, many by artists of the New York Academy of Art, on the hotel’s page; daily housekeeping and turndown, laundry, a guest relations team for every concierge request; and Wi-Fi for any number of devices, included in the rate.

The hotel says it is accessible to guests with reduced mobility, with adapted rooms and step-free paths in the main areas. Rooms are non-smoking. It also rents villas elsewhere on the island under the name Eden Rock Villa Rental, a separate service from the 37 keys on the rock.

Are there offers?

One showed on the booking engine: a «Summer Package» for stays from June to August 2027 that adds a small car, delivered the morning after arrival, for €50 a night over the standard rate. The hotel’s site has no offers page of its own, and the Oetker Hotels offers page listed nothing for Eden Rock on 8 October 2026.

Can you get married at Eden Rock?

Yes. The hotel’s Q&A presents it as a venue for weddings and special occasions, from small ceremonies to dinners, and suggests the Yoga Deck above the sea for a proposal. It publishes no capacity, package or price, and no wedding page; the only place it names is that deck.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

The Sand Bar’s published hours are daily, dinner from 7 to 10pm, and they make no exception for 31 December. For New Year’s Eve 2026 the hotel’s site showed no gala menu, programme or price when we read it. Rooms are a separate matter: on the booking engine every night from 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 was unavailable.

Is there golf?

No. The hotel offers no golf, and none of the pages we read mentions a course on Saint-Barthélemy. The sports its Q&A and its fitness page list are on the water or on foot: kayaks, paddleboards, snorkelling, surf and swimming lessons, tennis in St Jean and guided hikes.

When is Eden Rock open, and what about hurricane season?

It closes every late summer. In August 2026 the hotel’s Instagram account said goodbye until October, and on its booking calendar the first night on sale is 18 October 2026 and the last 30 August 2027. Inside the season many dates were already unavailable: the calendar closed 20 December to 5 January, and 6 of the 22 stays we asked for returned no room.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to Météo-France, so the hotel is shut in September and early October but open in June, July, August and November, inside that season. Irma, in September 2017, closed it for 2 years. We found no hurricane guarantee on the hotel’s or the group’s pages.

How much does a night at Eden Rock cost?

The hotel’s own booking engine, read on 8 October 2026, sells stays of 2 to 5 nights at least and prints each price per night for 2, breakfast included: €2,200 in a Plantation Room from 18 to 22 October 2026, €2,300 in a Beach Room from 3 to 5 November, €4,200 in the Legacy Suite Garbo from 15 to 19 December, when no room was left, €4,900 in the Captains Room from 1 March 2027, €3,150 from 10 April, €1,900 from 1 July and €1,700 from 1 August.

Those figures carry the label «Including Taxes & Fees», and the rate’s conditions then add a 5% local tax billed on departure. They include breakfast, the transfers, loungers and water sports. The hotel’s Q&A says rooms start from €1,400; we found none below €1,700. Google Hotels showed no price on any of its 115 nights, and Booking.com’s page takes no reservations for the hotel.

What do the reviews say?

The scores, read on 8 October 2026, are high: 4.6/5 from 415 on Google and 4.9/5 from 1,052 on Tripadvisor, where it is first of 7 hotels in St Jean, with location, service and cleanliness at 4.9 and value at 4.4. Booking.com has no reviews of it.

We read the 195 Google reviews with text written since January 2020, after the rebuilt hotel reopened; a large share are by people who came for a meal or a drink. 96% of those discussing the location are positive, as are 79% of those discussing staff and services. The praise goes to the rock on St Jean beach, the view over the bay and the welcome from the floor staff; where the bill comes up, it is over the prices at the table and the spa: €75 for a visitor’s breakfast in December 2025, from €190 for a 60-minute massage.

What is added to the price, and what are the cancellation terms?

A 5% local tax, billed when you leave, according to the conditions of every rate on the booking engine; nothing else is itemised, and no resort fee or service charge appears. A deposit of 30% is due at booking and the rest is charged 45 days before arrival.

Cancelling is free until 45 days before arrival on those conditions; after that, or for a shortened stay or a no-show, the whole stay is charged. The Q&A page describes an older rule: 90 days, with a 10% administration fee for cancelling earlier. The engine’s terms are the ones attached to the booking.
