Arriving by train, the Barbizon Palace makes for an easy start: put down your bags and you’re already in the centre. I’d choose it for days exploring Amsterdam on foot and a glass at Vermeers Wijnkamer on my return.

Is it for you?

For two, I’d start with a Premium with View: beams and windows over the city give you more to return to than another service. Beds can be king or twins.

I’d ask for
A Premium Room with View with the king bed confirmed.
Worth knowing
A choice of pillows is available in the room.

Seating in the Barbizon Palace wellness area
  1. A kitchen for a longer stay

For a few nights, I’d look at the One-Bedroom Apartment With Canal View: it has a kitchen. It gives you somewhere to make breakfast without going out every morning.

  2. Bringing a car

Covered parking costs €70 a day or €7 an hour and can be reserved before arrival. On a rail trip, I’d leave that item off the bill.

  3. When to use the sauna

The sauna and steam room run from 7am to noon and 5pm to 11pm. They are available on request in between; coming back before dinner fits the standard timetable.

What the Barbizon Palace is

This is a large hotel fitted into several different houses, with sloping beams, rooftop outlooks and layouts that change between rooms. Premium Rooms and Junior Suites are individual, so I’d settle the outlook and arrangement before the category name.1

The buildings also include Olof’s, a 15th-century chapel now used for events. It tells you more about the place than the word Palace above the door.2

For dinner there’s Vermeer; for a glass of wine, Vermeers Wijnkamer stays open until midnight and serves bistro dishes too.3

How we choose the hotels

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests exploring the city appreciate being close to the station and able to head out on foot.

  2. Room

6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Some rooms are remembered for space and quiet; others let in street noise and show signs of wear.

  3. Staff and service

Guests also describe successful room moves when noise kept them awake.

  4. Breakfast

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests like the buffet, hot dishes to order and coffee served at the table.

  5. Price

The bill divides guests who discuss it: some find the price fair, while others weigh it against what is missing in the room.

298 guests said so on Google, from 5 May 2025 to 26 October 2026. Google reviews of the hotel, including visits to its bars and restaurants. Peer hotels may cover different periods. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Amsterdam: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 3 November 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Amsterdam:

Price: for 2, the night of 17 January 2027, from €146 on Google Hotels on 3 November 2026.

When a night costs less

For a stay near the station, I’d compare 14 December 2026 with 15 August 2027: one night for 2 starts at €179 and €245 respectively.

Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam

Breakfast beneath the Wintergarden’s glass would bring me to the Krasnapolsky even for one night. I’d plan around that morning, then the rest of the weekend; for the intimacy of a small canal house, I’d choose another address.

Le facciate del Pulitzer lungo il canale

Pulitzer Amsterdam

I’d book a canal-facing room at the Pulitzer and leave the afternoon open: take the hotel’s boat out or settle at the bar. If a daily swim matters, The Grand has an indoor pool.

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

At The Grand in central Amsterdam, you can come back for a swim after a day on foot, then dine at Bridges without putting your coat back on. That would bring me here; for a small canal-house hotel, look elsewhere.

Pestana Palace Lisboa

At Pestana Palace, leave a few hours unplanned. I would come for the garden and for a palace to return to after Lisbon’s hills; if every evening belongs in the centre, allow for the journey.

The One Palácio da Anunciada

At The One, head towards Restauradores, then return beneath the palace’s restored ceilings. I’d choose it for a few days away together, leaving an afternoon for the garden and its century-old dragon tree.
