I’d book a canal-facing room at the Pulitzer and leave the afternoon open: take the hotel’s boat out or settle at the bar. If a daily swim matters, The Grand has an indoor pool.

Is it for you?

For a weekend together, I’d take the Pulitzer Suite: the bath stands in the middle of the room and the windows face the gardens. It gives you a reason to stay in even after the rain stops.

I’d ask for
The Pulitzer Suite with its freestanding bath in the room.
Worth knowing
The layout is open, with the bed and sitting area in the same space.

Like a regular

The Pulitzer’s inner garden
  1. Pick the outlook

Classic and Classic Canal View rooms have the same average floor area: choose the latter to wake up by the water. Generous Canal View rooms are smaller on average than Generous rooms without that outlook.

  2. If you bring a car

Valet parking costs €90 a day and the garage takes cars up to 1.90 metres high. With the car already packed for the trip, check its height before you arrive.

  3. The boat in winter

The Tourist, the hotel’s 1909 boat, is out for maintenance from 11 January to 10 March. I wouldn’t build a trip around that cruise during those dates.

What the Pulitzer is

The houses date from the 17th and 18th centuries; the hotel’s first incarnation opened in 1970. You move through a piece of the city, with passages between buildings and different layouts even within the same room category.1

The Collector’s Suites give you a more unusual choice: porcelain, books, flowers, antiques and art each shape a different room. The Art Collector’s Suite has a painting 6 metres long. That is quite a starting point for furnishing a room.2

For dinner, Jansz. draws on Dutch cooking, while Pulitzer Garden serves meals in the courtyard. The Beauty House offers massages and facials; the gym occupies 2 floors and stays open 24 hours for hotel guests aged 18 and over.3

How we choose the hotels

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Pulitzer Amsterdam’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests like exploring Amsterdam on foot from the canals.

  2. Room

6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests like rooms with character; some describe cramped spaces and dim rooms.

  3. Staff and service

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests remember the staff’s warmth and help with planning their visit.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast variety and canal-side tables stay with guests.

  5. Price

Among guests commenting on the bill, the price rarely feels justified.

297 guests said so on Google, from 4 November 2024 to 3 November 2026. Google reviews of the hotel, including visits to its bars and restaurants. Peer hotels may cover different periods. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Amsterdam: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 3 November 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in Amsterdam:

Price: for 2, the night of 3 January 2027, from €284 on Google Hotels on 3 November 2026.

When a night costs less

A night at the Pulitzer costs less on 20 December 2026: one night for 2 starts at €325, against €464 on 3 August 2027. It is a reason to look beyond summer.

A comfortable bed is not everything

A guest likes the bed, staff and breakfast, but finds the room dark, without comfortable seating, and the bathroom floor dirty. At that price they expected more.

L’ingresso del Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

At The Grand in central Amsterdam, you can come back for a swim after a day on foot, then dine at Bridges without putting your coat back on. That would bring me here; for a small canal-house hotel, look elsewhere.

Le facciate dell’NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace

NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace

Arriving by train, the Barbizon Palace makes for an easy start: put down your bags and you’re already in the centre. I’d choose it for days exploring Amsterdam on foot and a glass at Vermeers Wijnkamer on my return.

L’Anantara Krasnapolsky affacciato su piazza Dam

Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky Amsterdam

Breakfast beneath the Wintergarden’s glass would bring me to the Krasnapolsky even for one night. I’d plan around that morning, then the rest of the weekend; for the intimacy of a small canal house, I’d choose another address.

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

You can run above the rooftops and take tea among tapestries in the same day. I’d come for a Lisbon trip with time to spend at the hotel as well.

La piscina sul tetto dell’EPIC SANA Lisboa

EPIC SANA Lisboa

At EPIC SANA Lisboa, the day can end in a rooftop pool with Lisbon ahead: I’d come between May and September. You’re in Amoreiras; if you want Alfama’s lanes immediately outside, choose a base closer to them.

La Cúpula beneath the restored glass dome

The Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid

Breakfast at the Palace comes with a distraction overhead. I would come for the dome and days between the Prado and Thyssen; when booking, I would choose the view before counting square metres.

The Club Lounge sitting area

InterContinental Madrid by IHG

At InterContinental Madrid, start with a practical question: will you use the Club? I would pay for it when breakfast, breaks and work need a place in the hotel. For days spent out, I would start with the room itself.

The outdoor pool among the trees

Pestana Palace Lisboa

At Pestana Palace, leave a few hours unplanned. I would come for the garden and for a palace to return to after Lisbon’s hills; if every evening belongs in the centre, allow for the journey.

La piscina esterna del The One Palácio da Anunciada

The One Palácio da Anunciada

At The One, head towards Restauradores, then return beneath the palace’s restored ceilings. I’d choose it for a few days away together, leaving an afternoon for the garden and its century-old dragon tree.

Portrait Milano's Piazza

Portrait Milano

A piazza open to Milan, then the former seminary’s loggias and the room you choose for quiet.

Palazzo Parigi's monumental lobby

Palazzo Parigi

A theatrical staircase in Brera, a hidden garden and a room view you choose for yourself.
