I’d stay here to use the ferries and SkyTrain, then return for dinner on the river without another taxi. If you want an intimate hotel with few bedrooms, look elsewhere: Shangri-La’s 802 rooms belong to a different scale of stay.

  1. Evenings at the Club

    Horizon Club includes breakfast, evening cocktails and canapés, with soft drinks throughout the day. If your days will be spent out in Bangkok, work out how often you’ll return to the lounge.

  2. Meals with children

    For Shangri-La Circle members, up to 2 children aged 6 and under eat free at all-day dining buffets with a paying adult. Other children under 12 receive a 50% discount; you can join during the stay.

  3. Tennis before dinner

    Guests receive one hour of tennis a day between 6am and 6pm. After 6pm the guest rate is THB 300 an hour; factor that in if you prefer to play as the sun drops.

What Shangri-La Bangkok is

Shangri-La is in Bang Rak, on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya. Your room choice begins with its outlook: Deluxe rooms face the city and part of the river, while Deluxe River View rooms promise water outside the windows.

Dinner can mean Thai cooking at Salathip, Chinese dishes at Shang Palace or Volti Tuscan Grill & Bar. Shangri-La Horizon Cruise offers another evening, dining as you sail along the river.

The health club provides a gym and tennis courts. For a swim, choose between the main pool and the Krungthep Wing pool.

I’d book this for days that leave some time for the hotel: a Cantonese dinner, a drink at BKK Social Club and another swim. If walking between shopping malls is your priority, choose Siam; this stay begins down by the river.
