Maalifushi suits families who want a children’s club and surf outings, with the lowest seller on Google showing one night for 2 adults from $944. For a short break centred on a quick arrival, I would choose an island reached by boat.

  1. A suite for sunrise

I would ask for a Water Suite for sunrise: its doors open from the living area to a terrace with a plunge pool and direct access to the lagoon.

  2. The less expensive week

Read on 12 October 2026, the single nights from 3 to 9 December 2026 range from $944 to $961 for 2 adults. The dearest night shown is 31 December 2026, at $4,278.

  3. Charges beyond the stay

Under COMO Advance Booking, charges carry a 10% service charge and prevailing government taxes; green tax applies to every night. In a Water Suite, babysitting and laundry are charged separately.

  4. An evening at Thila

The games room at Thila is open to all guests; I would keep it in mind for a change from the villa, with the bar open until 11pm.

What COMO Maalifushi is

COMO Maalifushi is the group’s largest private-island resort in the Maldives and, by its own account, the first and only one in Thaa Atoll; guests in 2023 and 2025 write that no other resort is in sight. Its 59 villas and suites, designed by the Japanese architect Koichiro Ikebuchi with teak floors and thatched roofs, run from 101 to 408 m², and every one has its own pool. 7 types stand on the beach and 4 over the water; families have six 2-bedroom types to choose from, and the 4-bedroom COMO Residence.

The ocean is the reason to come. Farms, one of the best waves in the Maldives, is 25 minutes away by boat, with Tropicsurf guides living on the island from April to October; the resort counts 33 dive sites, and on the house reef guests in 2026 describe sharks, rays and turtles. The COMO Shambhala spa has 8 treatment rooms over the water, a sauna, a steam room and a jacuzzi. There are 3 restaurants, Madi, the Japanese Tai and Thila by the pool, and 3 themed nights a week.

The distance is part of the stay, and it has a price. The seaplane is $1,050 per adult return and does not fly after 4.30pm; on Google Hotels a night between October and January ran from $953 to $4,278, taxes included. On the island you eat at the resort’s 3 restaurants and there is nothing else around: anyone who wants a different table every night, or a short transfer from the airport, will be happier in an atoll closer to Malé.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

COMO Maalifushi stands alone in Thaa Atoll, with no other resort in sight: 59 pool villas, the Farms surf break 25 minutes away by boat and a COMO Shambhala spa over the water.

  6. The stay as a whole

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do COMO Maalifushi’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. Guests write of the seclusion of an atoll with no other resort, a house reef with sharks, rays and turtles, and the seaplane flight over the atolls.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Of the villas, guests write about the space, the privacy and the pool each one has; those over the water describe very large villas and the view from the deck.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the villa hosts, often by name, the chefs at Tai and Madi, the dive centre and the surf guides.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is at Madi, on the beach, from 7am to 10.30am: a small buffet with dishes cooked to order, facing the sea.

  5. Price

Guests who write about the bill speak of a stay worth the journey; the website’s offers include breakfast and dinner at Madi, and the seaplane is charged separately.

The scores come from 130 Google reviews with text, left from 31 July 2015 to 28 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

Children, between the lagoon and Play by COMO

Play by COMO takes children aged 4 to 11, from 9am to 6pm: treasure hunts, Maldivian cooking, boduberu drumming and junior marine biology. There are children’s bicycles, a playground, a games room for older children and babysitting on request. In July 2026 a family describes the children cycling round the island and the youngest, at 18 months, just as happy.

Good to know before you book

  • The seaplane is the only way in and is paid separately: $1,050 per adult and $550 per child aged 2 to 11, return, from 5 January 2026; $1,100 per adult from 6 January 2027. The flight takes an hour, sometimes with a stop at another resort, and the last take-off is before 4.30pm: anyone landing in Malé after 3.15pm sleeps there or at COMO Cocoa Island, 40 minutes from Malé by speedboat.

  • Rates on the website’s offers include breakfast and dinner at Madi. The Simply COMO all-inclusive, $349 per person per night with Ultimate Savings, adds lunches, drinks, group outings and a 60-minute massage for guests over 18; diving, private excursions, the seaplane and the Christmas and New Year galas are not included.

  • Surfing is run by Tropicsurf, with a guide based on the island from April to October and boat trips to Farms, in Thaa, and to the breaks of Laamu and Dhaalu; prices are given at the Surf Shack.

  • The sea is not the same everywhere: guests in 2026 describe a house reef full of sharks, rays and turtles. In May a couple walked at low tide to the islet in front of their villa, in reef shoes.

  • The resort’s own figures do not always match: the accommodation page and the fact sheet count 59 villas and suites, the wedding brochure 65; the island map and the accommodation page’s FAQ still name Garden Rooms, which the catalogue does not include. The fact sheet speaks of a 50-metre pool, the facilities page of 14.6 by 6 metres.

Questions before you go

The questions people ask before booking COMO Maalifushi, with the sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.

What kind of resort is COMO Maalifushi?

A COMO Hotels and Resorts property on its own island in Thaa Atoll, in the southern Maldives: the home page calls it the group’s largest private-island resort in the Maldives, the «About» page the first and only one to open in the atoll. It has 59 villas and suites, all with a pool, according to the accommodation page and the fact sheet, designed by Koichiro Ikebuchi with teak floors and thatched roofs. Google Hotels rates it 5 stars. The website does not give the year it opened; the oldest Google review collected dates from July 2015. EarthCheck certified it Silver in November 2024, says the sustainability page.

The wedding brochure counts 65 villas and suites instead, and the island map still marks Garden Rooms, which no room page offers.

Which villas are there, and how big are they?

11 types, all with a private pool, on the accommodation page. On the beach: Beach Suite, 101 m²; Beach Villa, 116; 2-bedroom Beach Suite, 131; Two-Bedroom Beach Villa, 145; Two-Bedroom Beach House, 178; Maalifushi Beach Villa, 296; and the 4-bedroom COMO Residence, 356. Over the water: Water Suite, 107 m²; Water Villa, 120; Maalifushi Water Villa, 213; and COMO Villa, 408.

The fact sheet counts them: 13 Beach Suites, 7 Beach Villas, 17 Water Suites and 13 Water Villas, then one or two of each other type. One-bedroom types sleep up to 4, including 3 children; 2-bedroom types up to 6. Pools run from 4.7 by 3.6 metres in the Beach Suites to 13.8 by 5.1 in the Residence; the website does not say whether the sizes include decks and pools.

Where is it, and is the island quiet?

In Thaa Atoll, in the southern Maldives, an hour by seaplane from Malé and 45 minutes from COMO Cocoa Island, according to the fact sheet. The Google listing gives only «Thaa Atoll, Maldives». The resort calls itself the only one in the atoll, and guests agree: in 2025 a guest writing in Italian saw no other resort or building on the horizon, and heard no boats.

It is a quiet island, with bicycles to get around and a 10-minute walk from the water villas to the restaurant, as a couple describes in May 2026. In December 2025 a guest found it peaceful, particularly outside the school holidays.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the seaplane cost?

Only by seaplane: an hour from Malé in 15-seat propeller planes, which sometimes stop at another resort, then 5 minutes by speedboat from the platform to the island, according to the transfer flyer. A return costs $1,050 per adult and $550 per child aged 2 to 11 from 5 January 2026, $1,100 per adult from 6 January 2027; infants under 2 travel free. A private seaplane for up to 10 people costs $9,400 each way until 5 January 2027 and $9,900 after. Prices are net, with service charge and tax.

Flight details are due at least 72 hours ahead. The last take-off is before 4.30pm: anyone landing in Malé after 3.15pm sleeps in Malé or at COMO Cocoa Island, 40 minutes away by speedboat. The FAQ gives a flight of 30 to 60 minutes, the «About» page and the fact sheet 60. The Google Hotels listing shows a free airport shuttle, but the resort’s flyer charges for every transfer.

Can you drive there or park?

No: the island is reached only by seaplane, and on it you go on foot, by bicycle or by the on-demand buggy included in the website’s offers. The Google Hotels listing also marks parking as unavailable.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beach villas you step straight on to the sand; from the water villas and suites you enter the lagoon from the deck, as the villa pages describe. There are beaches on both sides of the island, a guest wrote in 2025, and in May 2026 a couple walked at low tide to the islet in front of their villa.

At low tide you can walk out to the islet, and it takes reef shoes.

Is there a reef you can swim to?

Yes. The island map marks the Maalifushi House Reef, and the Aqua Safari with the marine biologist sets off from the house jetty, says the facilities page. In 2026 guests describe reef sharks, rays, turtles and healthy coral a few metres from the villas; in September a German guest called it «a pure experience».

The resort works with Seamarc and Reefscapers to replant coral, and guests can join in. The dive centre goes to 33 sites, with a first try-dive from $250 and the Open Water course from $995.

What are the pools like?

Every villa and suite has its own pool, from 4.7 by 3.6 metres to 13.8 by 5.1, all 1.2 metres deep, on the accommodation page. Then there is the resort pool beside Thila, which the facilities page gives as 14.6 by 6 metres and the fact sheet calls a 50-metre pool; the all-inclusive sheet describes it as lagoon-like. The spa has a plunge pool and a jacuzzi. Booking.com counts 2 pools.

Thila, the bar and restaurant by the pool with a sand floor, opens from 11am to 11pm and serves lunch from noon to 4pm.

Are the pools heated, and when are they open?

The resort pool opens from 9am to 7pm, according to the island map; Thila, the bar beside it, from 11am to 11pm. The website does not say whether the pools are heated or at what temperature: in the Maldives, says the «About» page, it stays around 30 °C all year.

Where do you eat, and until when?

3 restaurants. Madi, on the beach, serves breakfast from 7am to 10.30am and dinner from 6.30pm to 10pm, with themed nights: Indian on Mondays, lobster and Champagne on Wednesdays, a seafood and meat grill on Fridays. Tai, the Japanese restaurant over the water, serves sunset drinks from 5pm to 7pm and dinner from 7pm to 10pm, and is closed on Fridays. Thila, a bar and restaurant by the pool with a sand floor, opens from 11am to 11pm and serves lunch from noon to 4pm. In-room dining runs around the clock.

These are the hours on the restaurants’ own pages, read on 15 October 2026: Madi serves breakfast and dinner only, and the dining page counts 3 restaurants and one bar. Private meals, from a caviar and Champagne breakfast at $399 a couple to a $110 hot pot, are on the private dining page.

Which meal plans are there, and what do they include?

The website’s offers, Ultimate Savings and Advance Booking, include breakfast and dinner at Madi. The Simply COMO all-inclusive adds breakfast at Madi, 3-course lunches at Thila or Tai, 3-course dinners at Madi, Tai or Thila, wine, Champagne, cocktails and drinks by the glass, a minibar restocked once a day, afternoon tea, sundowners with live music, one 60-minute COMO Shambhala massage per guest over 18, group trips with dolphins and turtles, a 30-minute photo shoot and one load of laundry.

With Ultimate Savings, Simply COMO costs $349 per person per night. Not included, according to the all-inclusive sheet: premium wines and spirits, diving, private excursions, nights on Lavadhoo island, the seaplane and the Christmas and New Year galas. In April 2026 a guest on half board paid only for wine and cocktails.

What is the spa like?

The COMO Shambhala Retreat has 8 treatment rooms over the water, an open-air yoga pavilion, a yoga studio, a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi separate for men and women, and a gym, according to the fact sheet. The facilities page speaks of 8 double treatment rooms; the all-inclusive adds a Finnish sauna, a plunge pool, a relaxation lounge and the padel court. The spa page calls it one of the group’s largest COMO Shambhala retreats, without giving its size.

Yoga and meditation are daily and free, and from 1 December 2026 to 15 February 2027, 2 visiting practitioners take turns, the first offering acupuncture and qigong.

Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?

The facilities are free for guests aged 16 and over, according to the spa menu: the gym, locker rooms, steam room, jacuzzi and sauna. Treatments are paid for, except the 60-minute massage per guest over 18 included in Simply COMO; under-16s can have treatments on request, and the family page offers gentle massages for children.

No resort page publishes a day pass for people not staying on the island, which is reached only by seaplane: the spa menu speaks only of COMO Maalifushi guests.

What are the spa’s opening hours?

The spa opens from 9am to 9pm, the gym 24 hours and the padel court from 7am to 9pm, according to the spa menu. Treatments in the villa cost $75 extra and those outside opening hours $110; cancellations need 4 hours’ notice, or the full price is charged.

Which treatments are there, and what do they cost?

The menu starts with the COMO Shambhala Massage, $200 for 75 minutes and $235 for 90; the back massage is $155 for 45 minutes, hot stones $250 for 90, the COMO Shambhala Bath $315 for 120 minutes and the Sundãri facials $175 for 60. Add 10% service charge and tax. In August 2026 a guest advised not leaving the spa until the last day.

Is it good for children?

Yes. Play by COMO takes children aged 4 to 11, from 9am to 6pm, with games, cooking, boduberu drumming and marine biology, according to the FAQ and the facilities page; there are playgrounds, children’s bicycles, a games room for older children, cots and high chairs on request and paid babysitting. Children aged 6 and under eat free; from 7 they get 50% off the à la carte menu, up to 11 according to the FAQ and the facilities page, up to 12 according to the family page.
