For couples and divers who want the Maldives of old on a natural island, Makunudu starts at $494 for one night, 2 adults, from 12 December 2026: the lowest price any seller showed on Google. If a pool or a water villa matters, choose another island: Makunudu has neither.
Co-founder & CEOMarco Di CesareHe spent weeks comparing hotels and kept finding that the detail deciding the trip was missing from the hotel website. 10 years in marketing technology, 2 of them building with AI.About MarcoHow we write the guideLinkedIn
I would ask for a Deluxe Beach Bungalow: 50 m² against 40 m² for a Beach Bungalow, with a private patio facing the sea, afternoon canapés and a sundowner each at the Sunset Bar.
The week to consider
Consider 12 to 18 December 2026: every night for 2 adults showed $494 on Google, read 12 October 2026. The dearest week shown, 24 to 30 April 2027, was $1,218 a night.
Service and tax on prices
On the spa menu, a 10% service charge and 17% government tax are added to every price, while the dive and water-sports price lists already include both.
The Sunset Bar window
The Sunset Bar pops up on the western beach only from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, and only on clear days, so plan the aperitif before dinner around the weather.
What Makunudu is
People come to Makunudu for the sea. The website describes a house reef beside Turtle Point, with hawksbill turtles every day, and the guests agree: 95% of the 111 Google reviews that discuss the location praise it, for nurse sharks, rays and fish a few metres from the sand. All 36 bungalows, 16 Deluxe of 50 m² and 20 Beach of 40 m², open straight onto the beach and have a shower in their own garden.
Makunudu is to be chosen for what it is, a pared-back island. There is no pool, the free Wi-Fi comes as 2 GB a person, breakfast is a simple buffet, and among the trees there are mosquitoes: the resort, guests write, sprays regularly. The only transfer is a shared speedboat, and the website prints no price for it or for the meal plans: one guest in January 2026 paid $249 a person, return.
In the Lumina Guide
Lumina Guide 2027
Makunudu is a small island of palms in North Malé Atoll: 36 bungalows on the beach and the reef a few strokes from the shore, 45 minutes by speedboat from Malé.
What do Makunudu Island’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.
Location
Nearly every guest who mentions it is happy with it. The reef is a few strokes from the shore: guests write of turtles, nurse sharks and rays, and of the beach in front of every bungalow.
Room
7 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe spacious bungalows among the trees, with a big bed and a Maldivian bathroom with its open-air shower.
Staff and service
8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write of smiling staff who know them by name, the same waiter for the whole stay and a dive centre that is patient and well qualified.
Breakfast
Breakfast is a buffet at Ara Iru, from 7.30 to 10am; at the table what guests remember most is dinner, served à la carte.
Price
Guests who write well of it find the price fair for the Maldives of today; the speedboat transfer, the drinks outside the meal plan and the New Year gala dinner come on top of the rate.

The scores come from 186 Google reviews with text, left from 25 July 2013 to 29 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in North Malé Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
The hotels we weigh it against in North Malé Atoll:
Price: for two on the night of 12 December 2026, from $494 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).
What a night costs, season by season
Between 12 December 2026 and 4 March 2027 single nights for 2 adults run from $494 to $1,218; 5–20 March and 11–30 April 2027 show $1,218 a night, and 1 May to 3 September 2027 runs from $666 to $971. I would aim for 12 to 18 December 2026, when every night shows $494, and ask the resort about 1 to 4 January 2027, nights with no price.

What to expect
The table, the spa and the reef, beyond the bungalow.
Ara Iru, «rising sun» in Dhivehi, sits on the eastern tip and serves buffet breakfasts and lunches, à la carte dinners and barbecues. The Sand Bar stays open from 10am to 11pm, Miyaru Bar looks over the lagoon’s baby sharks, and the Sunset Bar appears only at sundown, and only when the sky is clear.
Maldivian massage with coconut oil and seashells, Balinese, Swedish and Ayurvedic treatments, facials and coconut scrubs, from 9am to 7pm. Yoga is arranged on request, on the beach or in the Malaafaiy tree house.
The reef beside Turtle Point is a swim from the beach. Dive Ocean, a PADI school, takes guided dives to Manta Point, Shark Point, Blue Canyon and Madi Gaa; in the evening nurse sharks gather within sight of Miyaru Bar.

Makunudu Island reviews
The platforms’ scores, read on 3 October 2026, and what guests write about the reef, the bungalows, the food and the transfer.
On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.6/5 from 289 ratings. We read all 186 Google reviews with text, from 25 July 2013 to 29 September 2026, 68 of them written since 2025: they are accounts of stays we have not checked.
In September 2026 an Italian couple, 10 days on full board through a tour operator, called it one of the finest reefs they had seen, with bungalow 18 large and cleaned twice a day; alcohol and other drinks were charged separately.
In August 2026 a guest found Makunudu good value for today’s Maldives: a green, quiet island, a lovely reef, spacious villas. The bathrooms, though, need refurbishing, and he wanted more fish and seafood at dinner.
In September 2026 a family in a Beach Bungalow found the outward boat ride bumpy with their 12-month-old, and the return smooth. They thank the chef, who cooked for the baby.
In June 2026 a couple who first came in 2011 found the island, the room and the staff as good as ever, but not the kitchen: overcooked meat, a poor breakfast and reheated barbecue.
In January 2026, 2 nights on half board: $249 a person for the speedboat, over an hour’s wait at the airport, and $300 asked at check-in for a New Year’s Eve event described as compulsory.
In December 2025 a German couple left early: an overgrown island, mosquitoes even by day, rooms in need of renovation. Other guests that winter describe an easy, happy stay.
The questions people ask before booking Makunudu, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.
What kind of resort is Makunudu Island?
A 4-star resort on Google, on a natural island in North Malé Atoll that the website presents as one of the original Maldivian retreats: 36 bungalows on the beach and no water villas, says the «Stay» page. Booking.com calls it a 6-acre island, about 2.4 hectares, and guests walk round it barefoot in 15 to 30 minutes. The website names no group and no opening year.
Some guests count 37 or 38 bungalows, and the factsheet map numbers the Deluxe bungalows 1 to 17 and the Beach bungalows 18 to 37; every official text, though, says 36, 16 plus 20. The website is kept current: dive and water-sports price lists uploaded in May 2026, the experiences page edited in June.
What are the bungalows like, and how big are they?
2 kinds. The 16 Deluxe Beach Bungalows measure 50 m², with a private patio facing the sea, a coffee machine, canapés every afternoon and a sundowner each at the Sunset Bar. The 20 Beach Bungalows measure 40 m² and line the island’s edges, the lagoon a short stroll away.
All have king or twin beds, air conditioning and a ceiling fan, a minibar, a safe, free Wi-Fi and an open-air shower in the garden. The website publishes no occupancy; Booking.com also sells a triple. Guests describe them as spacious, with a big bed and rustic island furnishings.
Is it suitable for children?
The resort’s site does not publish a policy on children’s ages or cots, as read on 15 October 2026. Booking.com says children over 10 are welcome, that those aged 13 and over pay as adults and that there are no cots; Expedia says children are welcome, also without cots. In September 2026 a family came with a 12-month-old, and the chef cooked for the baby.
There is no kids’ club; the factsheet map marks a playground. Dive Ocean takes children into the water from 8 with Bubblemaker and from 10 with Discover Scuba Diver. In January 2026 one guest praised the island precisely for having no children.
Where is it, and is it quiet?
On Makunudu island in North Malé Atoll, 45 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport, says the «Escape» page; the address on the contact page is Makunudu Island, North Male’ Atoll. Guests place it on the atoll’s western side, away from boat traffic and evening light.
It is a quiet island with no entertainment programme: the Friday bonfire and the beach cinema are the evenings out.
How do you get there, and what does the transfer cost?
By shared speedboat only: 45 minutes from Velana airport according to the factsheet, 50 according to Booking.com, 45 to 60 in guests’ accounts. Expedia asks guests to contact the resort at least 72 hours before arrival; the website does not mention seaplanes.
The price is not published. In January 2026 a guest paid $249 a person, return; in October 2025 another mentions $600 for 2. The Simply Romantic Package includes the shared speedboat. In a swell, several guests write, the crossing is rough.
Can you drive there or park?
No: Makunudu is an island reached only by speedboat from Malé. There are no roads and no car parks, and guests walk barefoot on sand paths.
What is the beach like, and how do you get into the sea?
Every bungalow opens straight onto the beach, says the «Stay» page. The website calls Makunudu a completely natural island, never built up with dredged sand, and a guest in May 2025 warned that, as a result, not every bungalow has the same easy way into the water.
The shore has shells and coral fragments, so reef shoes help, several guests advise. Another notes that the island cannot be walked all the way round along the beach.
Is there a reef you can swim to?
Yes. The house reef lies beside Turtle Point, with hawksbill turtles to be seen daily, the website says, and it publishes a snorkelling map. Guided house-reef snorkelling costs $43 and sunset snorkelling with sharks $68, from the 2026 price list.
Almost every guest agrees: turtles, nurse sharks and eagle rays a few strokes from the shore. Several guests, between 2022 and 2026, write that the coral in front of the resort shows signs of bleaching and is growing back; the fish and turtles are a few strokes away.
Is there a pool?
No. Neither the website nor the factsheet describes a pool, Google Hotels lists one as unavailable, and guests say so: for a French guest in 2022 the ocean was the pool. Swimming is in the lagoon and on the reef, in front of the bungalow.
Are there heated pools or hot tubs?
No: the island has no pools or hot tubs, and the Aavun Spa menu lists treatments only, with no sauna, steam room or pools. The water is the lagoon’s, open all year.
Where do you eat, and when?
In a single restaurant, Ara Iru, on the island’s eastern tip: breakfast buffet from 7.30 to 10am, lunch buffet from 12.30 to 2pm, dinner from 8 to 10pm, says the factsheet. Dinner is à la carte, with barbecues on Tuesdays and Fridays according to the factsheet; the «Savor» page speaks of one barbecue night and one Maldivian buffet dinner a week, which a guest in 2025 put on Fridays.
There are 3 bars: the Sand Bar from 10am to 11pm, with live music and bodu beru drumming on some evenings; Miyaru Bar by the jetty from 4 to 6pm; and the Sunset Bar from 5.30 to 6.30pm, on clear days only. For a special evening there are private dinners in the Malaafaiy tree house, on Rock Island, on a sandbank or in the bungalow, with no published prices.
Is Makunudu all-inclusive? What do the meal plans include?
The website has no page on meal plans. Google Hotels says breakfast and dinner are included, Expedia that all-inclusive rates exist; guests describe half board, full board and all-inclusive, depending on how they booked.
On full board, a couple wrote in September 2026, water at meals was included and other drinks were not. All-inclusive covers a short list of drinks, served at the bar, non-motorised water sports and some sunset outings, guests reported in 2025 and 2026. The Simply Romantic Package includes breakfast, lunch and dinner and 2 glasses of wine at dinner.
What is Aavun Spa like?
Aavun Spa blends Maldivian, Asian and European techniques: Maldivian massage with seashells and coconut oil, facials, reflexology and Ayurvedic head massage. The website gives no floor area, number of rooms or thermal areas: no sauna, steam room or pools are described.
The official photographs show a reception with a sand floor and treatment rooms with massage beds opening onto the garden. Yoga is arranged on request, on the beach or in the Malaafaiy tree house. There appears to be no gym: Google Hotels lists one as unavailable, Expedia lists fitness facilities.
Is the spa included in the rate, and can outside guests use it?
Treatments are paid separately, plus 10% service and 17% tax, says the menu; there is no wellness area to use for free. The website publishes no day pass for non-residents, and the island can be reached only on the resort’s transfers.
The Simply Romantic Package includes a 30-minute massage each. On Booking.com on 3 October 2026, the description carried 30% off the spa and speedboat for stays of 7 nights or more booked from 30 August, valid until 30 September 2026.
What are the spa’s opening hours?
From 9am to 7pm, says the Aavun Spa menu. Bookings are made at the spa desk or through reception; cancelling less than 4 hours ahead, or not turning up, costs the full price. The menu asks guests to arrive 15 minutes early, free of sand.
Which treatments are there, and what do they cost?
From the menu: Balinese, Swedish, deep-tissue, shiatsu or Oriental massage, $75 for 60 minutes and $105 for 90; head, neck and shoulder or foot massage, $50 for 30 minutes; Pure Nature Facial, Coconut Scrub and foot reflexology, $75 for 60 minutes.
Relax & Refresh and the Maldivian Journey, with coconut oil and a coconut and sea-salt scrub, last 90 minutes and cost $115; the honeymoon package, 120 minutes for 2, $320. All prices are plus 10% service and 17% tax.
What else is on the island?
Dive Ocean, the PADI dive centre, and Riyaa Water Sports, with kayaks, paddleboards, windsurfing, catamarans and handline fishing, all charged on the 2026 price lists: one dive $120, the Open Water course $846, a kayak $29 an hour, say the dive price list and the water-sports list. Expedia says non-motorised sports are included, and all-inclusive guests confirm it.
Then badminton, table tennis, beach volleyball, indoor games, a library, the boutique and laundry; the beach cinema and the Friday bonfire. Free Wi-Fi comes as 2 GB a person, Booking.com says. There appears to be no doctor on the island: for a consultation, a guest wrote in July 2026, you are taken to another island or to Malé. No pets.
What offers are there?
On 6 October 2026 the offers page still showed 2025 dates: Last Minute for stays until 31 October 2025, Early Bird from 1 November 2025 and Festive Escapes, with no discounts stated.
The Simply Romantic Package costs $2,825 net for 4 nights in a Deluxe Beach Bungalow for 2, with the shared speedboat, full board, 2 glasses of wine at dinner, a romantic beach dinner, a 30-minute massage each and guided snorkelling, from January 2025 onwards, excluding 22 December 2025 to 10 January 2026.
Can you marry or renew your vows at Makunudu?
The «Say I do» page offers beach ceremonies drawing on Maldivian tradition and vow renewals, with bodu beru drums. The Renewal of Vows costs $2,256 plus 10% service and 17% tax: treatments for the couple, a bouquet, a cake, Champagne, a master of ceremonies, 24 photos in an album and a 5-course dinner on the beach.
The website publishes no capacity and does not say whether a ceremony is legally binding. For honeymooners Booking.com lists a bottle of wine, fruit and a decorated bed, with a marriage certificate no older than 6 months.
Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?
Yes, and it is compulsory: Booking.com says the Christmas and New Year gala dinners apply to every guest. The website publishes no programme or price for 31 December 2026; in January 2026 a guest wrote that $300 was asked at check-in for the evening.
On 12 October 2026 Google Hotels showed $1,118 for 2 for the nights of 30 and 31 December, and no price from 1 to 4 January 2027.
Can you play golf?
No: the website describes no course and no golf packages. The factsheet lists badminton, table tennis and volleyball, besides the water sports.
When is it open, and when is best?
The website announces no seasonal closure, and Google Hotels showed prices for 87 of the 120 nights from 4 October 2026 to 31 January 2027; for the rest the calendar gave no price, and no source mentions a closure. The offers page is stuck in 2025, but the dive and water-sports price lists were uploaded in May 2026 and reviews run to 29 September 2026.
On the weather, guests speak: in June 2026 one wrote that it was not the best season for weather, and in September another arrived in rough seas. The website names no best season.
How much does a night cost?
Google Hotels, read on 3 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $494 on most nights in October and from 8 to 23 December 2026, $484 on 7 October, $799 from 7 to 13 November, $935 on 9 November, $658 from 19 to 30 November, $890 on Christmas Eve, $1,118 on 30 and 31 December, and $1,218 on several nights from 15 to 31 January 2027. The calendar also showed $3,885 from 16 to 18 November and $5,172 on 2 and 4 December, outliers no source explains, and 33 of 120 nights without a price.
The calendar does not say which bungalow or which board. For the night of 4 October Google Hotels listed Trip.com, Bluepillow and Kiwi.com; the resort’s own website was not among the sellers.
What do the reviews say?
On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.6/5 from 289 ratings, Tripadvisor 4.6/5 from 1,107 with a Travellers’ Choice 2026 award, Booking.com 9.1/10 from 162, with 9.5 for staff and location and 5.8 for Wi-Fi, and Expedia 9.4/10 from 44.
In the 186 Google reviews with text, 95% of those who discuss the location are happy with it, 77% with the staff and 68% with the bungalows. The breakfast buffet is simple; the transfer, drinks outside the meal plan and compulsory New Year dinner are charged on top of the rate.
Which taxes and charges are added?
The spa menu and the Renewal of Vows quote prices plus 10% service and 17% tax; the dive and water-sports price lists already include both. The website does not say which taxes are added to bungalow rates.
Google Hotels prices for the Maldives include taxes and fees: for the night of 4 October, Bluepillow’s link showed $494.27 in total, of which $128.88 was taxes and fees. Booking.com says payment is in cash; the factsheet lists Amex, Mastercard, JCB and Visa.
