InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau, 81 villas and residences, every one with its own pool, at the southern tip of Raa Atoll, 35 minutes by seaplane from Malé
InterContinental Maldives suits couples and families who come for the manta rays, with tea and the evening aperitif included; the lowest seller on Google showed $1,064 for one night taken alone, for 2 adults, on 4–6 June 2027. Anyone who wants an island without children may prefer another hotel: the main pool is the families’ one; The Retreat is for adults.

For the sunset I would ask for a Sunset Overwater Pool Villa: 100 m², with sweeping ocean views from its own private sundeck and infinity pool, according to the resort’s page.
The weeks that cost less
In the calendar read on 12 October 2026, one night taken alone asks $1,064 to $1,118 on 25 June–1 July 2027, against $1,746 to $2,009 on 8–14 February 2027. From 24 December 2026 to 9 January 2027 there is no price.
The seaplane and green tax
The FAQ lists the return seaplane at $760 per adult and $380 per child from 9 January 2026, with 10% service charge and 17% GST added. Green tax is $12 per guest per day, children included.
Dress code at The Lighthouse
The Lighthouse asks for island chic dress, with no shorts, bikinis or beachwear, so pack one outfit for evenings at the island’s signature Mediterranean restaurant.
What InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau is
Maamunagau is a long, thin island at the southern tip of Raa Atoll, beside Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and 35 minutes by seaplane from Malé. It has 81 villas and residences in 14 types, from 100 to 1,120 m², and every one has a pool: over the water, on the lagoon, on the beach, up to 3-bedroom residences with their own kitchen. The resort opened in September 2019 and is run by IHG for HPL Hotels and Resorts.
The format is that of the first resort where every guest is a Club InterContinental guest: à la carte breakfast, afternoon tea from 3 to 5pm, the aperitif from 5 to 7pm, soft drinks by the pool, non-motorised water sports and a curator who plans the stay. The lagoon around the island, the largest natural one in the Maldives by the resort’s account, is a feeding ground for juvenile manta rays from December to April, studied by the Manta Trust team based on the island. Of the 394 Google reviews with text, 96% of those discussing staff and services are positive.
The bill is worth adding up line by line. On Google Hotels a night for 2 ran from $1,198 to $1,459 between October 2026 and January 2027, the seaplane costs $979 per adult on Booking.com, and lunch and dinner are extra unless you take a meal plan. The villa rate covers breakfast, afternoon tea and the aperitif; for lunch and dinner too, half board or all inclusive is chosen when booking.

The scores come from 394 Google reviews with text, left from 12 December 2017 to 1 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in Raa Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.
Price: for two on the night of 4 June 2027, from $1,064 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).
What a night costs, season by season

InterContinental Maamunagau, Raaya or Amilla
Raaya by Atmosphere, the other Raa Atoll island reached by seaplane, suits those weighing its all-inclusive plan against breakfast and club service here, with lunch and dinner extra. Amilla, a Baa Atoll island of pool villas and large residences by seaplane, is another choice for families or groups who would take a residence here.
The Lighthouse, the signature restaurant, serves Mediterranean cooking from 7 to 10pm, after a drink at the top of the lighthouse with the whole island below. At Fish Market you pick Maldivian seafood to be cooked with South East Asian flavours; Café Umi runs from breakfast to dinner, with teppanyaki in the evening. The Collective turns out pizzas from noon to 10pm.
6 treatment villas built over the lagoon, according to the spa page, with The Organic Pharmacy, Biologique Recherche, VitaJuwel and Margaret Dabbs products. Next door are the yoga pavilion and the gym facing the sea; yoga also comes suspended in silks or in the water.
From December to April the Maamunagau lagoon is a feeding ground for juvenile manta rays; the Manta Trust team lives on the island and takes guests out. From May to November the trip is to Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll. The house reef is a few steps from the beach, and mask and fins come with the villa.
Good to know before you book
The seaplane is extra. Booking.com, read on 3 October 2026, asks $979 return per adult from 12 and $490 per child, taxes included, or $1,049 for the domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and the speedboat; from 8 May 2026 the resort takes 20% off the seaplane, $783. Anyone landing in Malé after 3:30pm can only come by the domestic flight.
The club covers breakfast, tea and the aperitif; lunch and dinner are extra. Half board, all inclusive and Premium All Inclusive are chosen when booking, and the site publishes no price for them; Premium needs at least 4 nights. Children under 12 eat free on their parents’ meal plan.
Christmas and New Year bring a supplement and a minimum stay. The 2026–27 festive offer drops the Christmas Eve supplement but keeps the compulsory New Year’s Eve gala dinner, charged from age 7; Booking.com lists both as compulsory.
The main pool is the families’ pool. Anyone after quiet has The Retreat, with its own infinity pool over the water, for over-18s only and no more than 18 guests.
The reef is reached from the beach, and the manta rays have a season. The activities page places it a few steps from the shore, busiest early in the morning and in the evening, and in December 2025 and April 2026 guests found it full of fish. The lagoon is a feeding ground for juvenile manta rays from December to April.

InterContinental Maldives reviews
The platforms’ scores, read on 3 October 2026, and what guests say about the villas, the lagoon and the service.
On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.9/5 from 468 ratings; 394 reviews carry text, written between December 2017 and 1 October 2026, and 208 of them date from 2023. They are accounts of stays we have not verified.
6 stays described on Google between November 2025 and September 2026.
Google
The favourite, after other resorts
In September 2026 a family who knew the St. Regis, the Sheraton and Le Méridien in the Maldives put this one first: for once, they write, nobody wanted to go home by day 5. The Lagoon Pool Villa worked well with their toddler, and the included tea and happy hour felt like a bonus.
A family with 2 children, in July 2026, recommends the nurse shark and manta excursions, helped by good weather. They would skip the group snorkelling trip, because coral bleaching around the atoll was severe, and for 4 nights suggest one dinner at Fish Market and 3 at The Lighthouse.
In April 2026 a guest gave one star: the main pool has no shade, and from morning until 4pm the sun is too strong to use it. At these prices, they write, shelter is the least to expect.
In December 2025 a family in a beach villa described the main pool as family-friendly and lively at times, and The Retreat as the place for calm. The Lighthouse was their favourite restaurant; they advise booking tables with the curator from the first day.
In November 2025 a family on their eighth trip to the Maldives, their fifth here, praised the villa, a pool partly in shade and an easy walk into the sea without water shoes: the reef, they write, is a few dozen metres out. At table they remember The Lighthouse and Fish Market’s lobster pasta.
Also in November 2025 a guest gave 3 stars: the marine life and snorkelling, they write, are thin compared with other islands in the Maldives, and the reality fell well short of the promise.
The questions people ask before booking the InterContinental Maldives, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.
What kind of resort is InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau?
A 5-star resort on its own island, Maamunagau, at the southern tip of Raa Atoll: it is owned by HPL Hotels and Resorts and operated by InterContinental Hotels Group, as the official site says. It opened in September 2019, according to the official fact sheet, and was the first resort where Club InterContinental benefits apply to every guest. There are 81 villas and residences, the figure on the island buyout page.
The design is by Eco-ID of Singapore. The resort is in the MICHELIN Guide selection, which counts 81 rooms, and in 2026 Travel + Leisure Asia Pacific named it among the 10 best family resorts in the Maldives for the second year, as the June press release announces.
Which villas and residences are there, and how big are they?
The residences have 2 or 3 bedrooms: the Two Bedroom Overwater, 295 m², the Two Bedroom Beachfront, 535 m², the Three Bedroom Overwater, 460 m², the Three Bedroom Lagoon, 610 m², and the Three Bedroom Royal Beachfront, 1,120 m². The site counts 6 residences and 12 One Bedroom Lagoon Pool Villas and gives no number for the other types. The 2022 fact sheet spoke of 4 residences and 790 m² for the Royal, and the home page’s structured data still gives the Beach Pool Villa 110–145 m².
Where is it, and how quiet is the island?
Maamunagau lies at the southern tip of Raa Atoll, beside Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, 35 minutes by seaplane from Malé according to the FAQ; the address is «Maamunagau Island, Raa Atoll 05060». The MICHELIN Guide describes a narrow sliver of an island where almost everything is a few steps from the beach.
It is a one-resort island, and the social life gathers around the main pool, The Collective and the Pool Bar. The main pool is the families’ pool; anyone after quiet has The Retreat, with its own pool for over-18s only.
How do you get there from Malé, and what does the seaplane cost?
By seaplane, 35 minutes, with the resort’s private lounge at the Malé terminal, where the wait is 1 to 2 hours according to the FAQ. Booking.com, read on 3 October 2026, asks $979 return per adult from 12 and $490 per child, taxes included; from 8 May 2026 the resort takes 20% off, $783 and $392, and from 10 January 2027 the discounted fare rises to $824 and $412. The discount does not apply to stays booked with IHG points.
The alternative is the 25-minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and 40 minutes by speedboat, $1,049 per adult and $528 per child return: the only way in for anyone landing in Malé after 3:30pm. The site’s FAQ still gives $760 plus 10% service charge and 17% GST, which comes close to Booking.com’s figure. Third-party boats and excursions are not allowed.
Can you drive there or park?
No: Maamunagau is an island reached only by seaplane, or by speedboat from Dharavandhoo, as Booking.com also says. The Google Hotels listing shows «free parking», which does not exist on the island; to get about, every guest has a bicycle.
How do you get into the sea?
From every villa. The water villas and the overwater residences have direct access to the sea, the lagoon villas the calm lagoon outside the door, the beach villas the sand. The lagoon surrounds the whole island, and the fact sheet calls it the largest natural lagoon in the Maldives.
In November 2025 a family wrote that the walk into the water is easy even without water shoes. Beach towels are in every villa, on Café Umi’s beach and at The Retreat, according to the FAQ.
Is there a house reef you can swim to?
Yes. The activities page places it a few steps from the beach, busiest early in the morning and in the evening; the fact sheet mentions blacktip sharks and turtles. Mask, fins and life vest are in every villa, and there is guided snorkelling with the marine biologist and an $85 private lesson, according to the site’s structured data.
In November 2025 a family found it a few dozen metres out, in December 2025 and April 2026 other guests described it as full of fish, and in March 2026 a guest recommended the stretch near the spa, with dolphins, rays and small sharks. For the juvenile manta rays that feed in the lagoon, the season runs from December to April.
What pools are there?
Every villa and residence has its own private pool, nearly always an infinity pool, according to the official pages. The main pool sits beside The Collective, with the swim-up Pool Bar open from 10am to 11pm; The Retreat has its own infinity pool over the water, for over-18s and up to 18 guests; Planet Trekkers has a children’s pool, with slides according to a guest in 2025.
Google Hotels also lists an indoor pool, which no page of the resort mentions.
Are the pools heated, and when are they open?
The site does not say whether they are heated and publishes no hours for the main pool; the swim-up Pool Bar is open from 10am to 11pm and The Retreat from 11am to 8pm. The villa pools are there at any hour for whoever is staying.
Where can you eat, and until what time?
According to the dining page: Café Umi, breakfast from 7 to 11am, lunch from noon to 3pm and dinner with teppanyaki from 6:30 to 10pm; Fish Market, Maldivian seafood with South East Asian flavours, in the evening; The Lighthouse, Mediterranean cooking from 7 to 10pm, no shorts or swimwear; The Collective, pizzeria and gelato bar from noon to 10pm; The Retreat, adults only, from 11am to 8pm. Then the Pool Bar, the Sunset Bar from 6:30 to 8pm and the wine cellar from 4 to 6pm.
Private dinners on the beach, on a sandbank or in the villa are booked separately. The page speaks of 7 restaurants and bars, the fact sheet and the 2025 press release of 6; one guest advises booking tables from the first day. The dress code is island chic.
Which meal plans are there, and what do they include?
Every rate includes Club InterContinental: à la carte breakfast at Café Umi, afternoon tea from 3 to 5pm, the aperitif from 5 to 7pm and soft drinks by the pool, according to the club page. Half board adds dinner at a selection of restaurants. All inclusive brings breakfast, lunch and dinner at a selection of restaurants and unlimited drinks from its own menu; Premium All Inclusive, from 4 nights, adds champagne, cognac, chosen wines and a minibar restocked daily.
The site publishes no prices for the meal plans, which are chosen after the villa, and from 4 nights several offers take 20% off them. Children under 12 eat free on their parents’ plan, from the children’s menu. A guest in 2025 also mentions full board, which the site does not describe.
What is the spa like?
It is called AVI, «sunshine» in Dhivehi, and stands over the lagoon: the spa page and the 2025 press release count 6 overwater treatment villas. Products come from The Organic Pharmacy, Biologique Recherche, VitaJuwel and Margaret Dabbs; in 2020 it won Luxury Island Resort Spa at the World Luxury Spa Awards. Next to it are the yoga pavilion over the sea and the gym.
Besides the 6 treatment villas on the spa page, the resort’s December 2025 press release includes thermal suite time in its wellness journeys, and its fact sheet lists steam rooms and ice fountains, all read on 15 October 2026. The site gives no floor area.
Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?
Treatments are extra. The thermal suite is included only in some offers: 2 hours for 2 in AVI Wellness and access in the residence offer; the site gives it no separate price. The resort credit, $50 a day for direct bookings of at least 7 nights, can be spent at the spa, and the festive offer adds $150 of spa credit.
No page publishes a day pass for anyone not staying on the island, and the resort does not allow third-party boats or excursions.
What are the spa’s opening hours?
The site does not publish AVI Spa’s hours. The water sports centre opens from 9am to 6pm, and yoga runs to a weekly calendar, with free sessions at sunrise and sunset according to the home page’s structured data.
Which treatments are offered, and at what price?
The spa page names Biologique Recherche facials, The Organic Pharmacy treatments and Margaret Dabbs care for hands, feet and legs; the yoga page adds aerial yoga, aqua yoga and floating sound therapy. The April 2026 press release gives 2 prices: $150 plus taxes for Floating Sound Healing and $280 for the 120-minute Maldivian Essence ritual.
The full menu is not published. There is also a Young Spa for teenagers in the teens’ programme, and visiting practitioners who come and go through the year.
Is it good for children?
Yes, it is one of its strengths. Planet Trekkers takes children from 4 to 12, with access included, and has a toddlers’ area, a library, a children’s pool, a garden and a pirate ship to climb; for teenagers there are cooking classes, dive certification, catamaran sailing, a Young Spa and teens-only evenings. Babysitting is charged, according to the FAQ.
Under 2s stay free; from 2 to 12 children stay and eat free on their parents’ plan, with green tax and the seaplane to pay; from 12 they are charged as adults. The Retreat is closed to under-18s. The site does not publish the club’s hours.
What is there on the island besides the villas?
A curator for every guest, with a 24-hour digital service; the spa; the gym by the sea and the yoga pavilion; a padel court, free since July 2026 according to the press release; the marine centre with the Manta Trust; non-motorised water sports included and motorised ones charged, from jet skis to parasailing; diving; bicycles; a 30-minute photo shoot; a boutique.
The sustainability page counts 1,577 solar panels, 15% of the island’s energy, and a coral nursery guests can sponsor. Drones are banned, and pets are not allowed according to Booking.com.
Almost all need at least 4 nights and take 20% off the seaplane and the meal plans. Direct bookings of at least 7 nights earn $50 of credit a day.
Can you get married at InterContinental Maldives?
Yes: the romance page offers ceremonies on the beach or in more secluded settings, with a bouquet, menus and a photographer, and anyone who wants the island to themselves can take all 81 villas, as the buyout page explains. The site publishes no prices or capacities and does not say whether the ceremony is legally binding.
Honeymoons and anniversaries get champagne on arrival, a decorated bath and bed and, from 5 nights, a floating breakfast, with a wedding certificate required. In September 2025 a guest thanked the officiant of their ceremony.
Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?
Yes. The festive programme, 12 Pearls of the Ocean from 20 December 2026 to 7 January 2027, ends on 31 December with sunset cocktails, the gala dinner, a concert by Pixie Lott and a midnight drone and fireworks show, according to the July 2026 press release. On Christmas Eve the choice is the gala buffet at Café Umi, a set menu at The Lighthouse or Fish Market’s à la carte.
The 31 December dinner is compulsory and charged on confirmation from age 7; children from 7 to 12 pay half. The site publishes no figure for 2026: the all-inclusive terms, written for the previous festive season, give $760 plus taxes for New Year’s Eve and $515 for Christmas Eve.
Can you play golf?
No: the resort has no course and no golf packages. The island’s sport is padel, free, beside the gym by the sea.
When is it open, and what is the best season?
All year: the site announces no closures. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 100 of 117 nights had a price; from 24 December to 9 January the calendar showed none, and the site sets a minimum stay over the holidays.
The FAQ names January to May and October to December as the best months; for mantas in the lagoon it is December to April, for Hanifaru Bay May or June to November, according to the resort’s pages. In late September 2025 a guest arrived to wind and rain on the first day.
How much does a night cost?
Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night: $1,687 on 7 October 2026, $4,151 on 27 October, the calendar’s peak, $1,242 on 13 November, $1,217 on 4 December, the cheapest night, $2,068 on 21 December and $1,991 on 10 January 2027.
These figures already include taxes and fees: for 7 October the official site on the same card asked $1,709, and its booking link showed almost a quarter of that as tax. The calendar names no villa or meal plan; from 24 December to 9 January it showed no prices, and the seaplane is extra.
What do the reviews say?
On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.9/5 from 468 ratings, Tripadvisor 5/5 from 1,815, with Travellers’ Choice, and Booking.com 9.7/10 from 30, with 10 for staff and cleanliness and 6.3 for Wi-Fi. Of the 394 Google reviews with text, 96% of those discussing staff are positive, as are 97% of those on the location and 96% of those on the villas.
The praise goes to the curator who arranges everything through the app, to staff who remember names and favourite dishes, to the turquoise lagoon and to the villas with their private pools. Few write about price, and not all in the same way: the seaplane is charged separately, and so are lunch and dinner without a meal plan.
Which taxes and charges are added?
The site’s rates are net: the FAQ adds 10% service charge and 17% GST to the seaplane, the same 17% applies to excursions, and green tax is $12 per person per night, children included from age 2 (MIRA GST, MIRA Green Tax, read on 15 October 2026). Google Hotels’ prices for the Maldives, on the other hand, include taxes and fees, and Booking.com quotes the seaplane with taxes included. At Christmas and New Year the gala dinner supplements come on top.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-in is from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to the FAQ, Booking.com and Google Hotels. In August 2026 a guest on the 3:30pm seaplane was given a room to rest in after check-out; for a same-day departure the international flight should leave after 9am.
