Vabbinfaru suits couples who put snorkelling first, from $858 for 2 adults for one night taken alone. For a stay built around a villa over the water or a different restaurant every evening, I would choose a larger island.

Like a regular

A refreshed villa: the four-poster bed with its cotton mosquito net, the thatched ceiling and the door open to the deck and the sea.
  1. Straight onto the beach

I would ask for the Beachfront Pool Villa for its direct beach access: 110 m² with an ocean view, a private pool and a jet pool, plus showers indoors and out.

  2. The cheaper December nights

For 17–23 December, the reading of 12 October 2026 shows $852 to $904 for one night taken alone for 2 adults; the dearest night, 24 February 2027, is $1,932.

  3. On top of the rate

For direct bookings, the published villa rates carry service charge and Tourism GST, plus Green Tax of $12 per person per night. The website lists combined airport transfers among its direct-booking benefits.

  4. Dinner at Sangu Garden

Keep a Tuesday, Friday or Sunday for dinner at Sangu Garden, when its grills and live cooking stations are part of the evening choice; lunch is served every day from 12.30pm.

What Vabbinfaru is

Vabbinfaru opened in 1995 and stays small on purpose. It takes 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana, the island can be walked round in about a quarter of an hour, and its 48 villas, in 5 types from 110 to 132 m², all stand on the beach with a private pool and a jet pool. There are no villas over the water: a guest from Thailand credits exactly that for a house reef where he saw a turtle, an eagle ray and several reef sharks. The renovation of late 2024 refurbished every villa and opened Saffron and Sangu Garden.

The island’s strong suit is the sea. The PADI dive centre, the Marine Lab with its coral planting and the free snorkelling sessions run all week; the spa follows Banyan Tree’s house style, with a 60-minute massage at $200, taxes included. On location 91% of the 63 Google reviews written since the renovation are positive, and on the staff 88%.

Half board and full board carry supplements on many dishes, and Sangu Garden serves dinner only 3 evenings a week, so on the other evenings the choice is Saffron or Madi Hiyaa. Anyone who wants a villa over the water or a long list of restaurants will be happier on a larger island. Malé, 18 km away, also shows on the horizon.

The scores come from 63 Google reviews with text, left from 15 December 2024 to 26 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in North Malé Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in North Malé Atoll:

Price: for two on the night of 23 December 2026, from $858 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

What a night costs, season by season

For one night taken alone for 2 adults, the lowest bookable run starts at $858 in December 2026, while nights from 24 December to 6 March 2027 range from $1,232 to $1,932. I would check the whole stay before choosing dates: 7 nights from 16 November cost $1,247 per night through the lowest seller on Google, against $1,321 on the resort’s own listing.

25 April to 5 September 20271,023–1,162

The lowest price any seller showed on Google for one night taken alone for 2 adults, read on 12 October 2026; no room or meal plan is specified. The calendar ends on 5 September 2027. The $771 low is the single night of 18 October 2026. In the reading of 6 October, the resort’s own price and the calendar both showed $899 for 7 October 2026. Booked as 7 nights from 16 November 2026, the lowest seller Google listed that day asked $1,247 a night; the resort’s own listing, $1,321.

Vabbinfaru, Baros or Kuda Huraa

Baros is the other small North Malé choice for couples considering a water villa, with children welcome from 8 years old. Kuda Huraa suits families seeking a kids’ club and a larger island with the same short speedboat journey.

A honeymoon in the Sunset Villa

In September 2026 a honeymoon couple in a Beachfront Sunset View Pool Villa knew after one day that they never wanted to leave: the villa, the very beautiful house reef and the 2 restaurants, and a night snorkel they loved.

The reef and the table

In July 2026 a guest found the service, the house reef and the massage excellent but the food far below expectations, at the level of a 3-star hotel, with the Japanese restaurant the biggest disappointment. On an island, the guest writes, the table matters because there is nowhere else to go.

A guest who enjoys staying here gave 3 stars in May 2026: this year’s price seemed unacceptable for very small villas, only 2 restaurants and a small gym, and for the same money there are resorts with large pools and villas over the water.

Mantas, turtles and reef sharks

In April 2026 a German guest found everything top: very good restaurants, lovely bungalows, 30 minutes from the airport and a house reef with mantas, rays, turtles and many harmless reef sharks. The drawback is Malé, close enough to haze the view and bring boat traffic.

Questions before you go

The questions people ask before booking Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru?

A 5-star resort of 48 villas on its own island in North Malé Atoll, run by Banyan Tree, the flagship brand of Banyan Group. The official site dates it to 1995 and calls it «the Original Maldives»; its Marine Lab, opened in 2004, was the first at a Maldives resort. Every villa is on the beach with its own pool, and none stands over the water.

In late 2024 the resort refurbished all its villas and opened Saffron and Sangu Garden, with grand openings from 27 November to 7 December 2024, according to the Banyan Group release; Madi Hiyaa opened in October 2023. Stays earn ALL – Accor Live Limitless points, according to the Best Available Rate page.

Which villas can you choose and how big are they?

5 types, all on the beach with a private pool and a jet pool, according to the accommodation page: Oceanview Pool Villa, 110 m², with an ocean view across a garden; Beachfront Pool Villa, 110 m², straight on to the beach; Beachfront Sunset View Pool Villa, 110 m², facing the sunset, with afternoon tea and a sunset sail by dhoni; Wellbeing Sanctuary Pool Villa, 120 m², with a wellbeing programme and check-in at any hour; Grand Beachfront Pool Villa, 132 m², with a separate living room and a sofa bed for up to 5 guests.

The first 4 sleep 3 and have a king bed; all have showers indoors and out and a minibar. The site does not say how many villas each type has. Guests since the refresh describe the villas as clean and well kept, with the private pool and the beach at the door.

Where is it, and how quiet is the island?

On Vabbinfaru, in North Malé Atoll, 18 km from Velana airport according to the location page, which puts the speedboat at 20 to 30 minutes. The Google listing gives only «Kaafu Atoll, North Male Atoll»; the sister resort, Dhawa Ihuru, is on the next island.

The island is small and quiet: guests walk round it in about 15 minutes, and in April 2025 a couple wrote that they saw other guests only at meals, with occasional live music and no loud entertainment. Malé, 18 km away, can be seen from the island.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the speedboat cost?

By the resort’s speedboat from Velana airport, 25 minutes on the official site and 20 to 30 on its location page; there is no seaplane. No source publishes the price. The website’s booking benefits on the offers page and the Stay More Pay Less offer include the transfer; Booking.com says the private speedboat is charged on top, and Google Hotels lists the airport shuttle as an extra charge.

Booking.com asks for flight details at least 2 days ahead. The Best Available Rate includes an airport meet and greet; in December 2025 a guest arriving early in the morning was given the villa straight away.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No: it is an island, reached only by boat from the airport, and no page of the resort names a car park. Google Hotels lists «parking» among the amenities, which does not apply to an island with no roads.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beach, which runs round the island: all 48 villas are on it, and the Beachfront and Grand Beachfront villas open straight on to it, according to their pages. A floating deck in the lagoon is used for weddings.

Guests praise the beach as wide and soft; in November 2025 a guest in a beachfront villa could swim and snorkel at any time. There are no overwater villas, so no steps into the lagoon from the room.

Is there a reef you can swim to?

Yes. The facilities page describes a house reef at the shoreline, and the home page’s answers say coral gardens begin moments from shore. With the activity guide 2026, the Marine Lab runs a free citizen-science snorkel on Tuesdays and the Save the Reef clean-up every other Wednesday; a guided reef snorkel costs $60, the night snorkel $70, the snorkelling safari $55.

Guests since the renovation describe reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, rays and, in April 2026, mantas; in December 2025 a returning guest recalled sharks gathering at night by the jetty. For divers there is the Rannamaari wreck, sunk in 1999, and about 40 sites nearby.

What pools are there?

Every villa has its own pool and a jet pool. The only shared pool is the saltwater infinity pool at Madi Hiyaa, the overwater restaurant, open from 8am to 6pm according to the facilities page; a guest in May 2025 described it as a pool on 2 levels.

Are the pools heated, and when are they open?

The site gives neither heating nor temperature. The infinity pool at Madi Hiyaa is open from 8am to 6pm, according to the facilities page; the villa pools are the guests’ own at any hour.

Where do you eat, and until what time?

According to the dining page: Saffron, Thai, breakfast 7 to 10am and dinner 6.30 to 10pm; Madi Hiyaa, Japanese over the water, lunch 12.30 to 2.30pm, dinner 6.30 to 9.30pm, bar 11.30am to 10pm; Sangu Garden, grills, buffet and live cooking, lunch every day and dinner on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday; Naiboli Bar on the beach, 10am to 11pm, with Bodu Beru drummers on Fridays.

The site counts the venues differently: 3 restaurants and 2 bars on the buy-out page, 5 venues and then 4 on the wellness page. Beach barbecues, floating breakfasts and dinners on the beach or in the sala are booked separately. The reviews written since the renovation keep coming back to the Thai cooking at Saffron, Madi Hiyaa with its infinity pool and the care taken over vegetarians and coeliacs.

What meal plans are there, and what do they include?

4, under the Dine Around programme: breakfast, the buffet at Saffron; half board, with lunch or dinner in any of the 3 restaurants; full board, with both; all-inclusive, which adds unlimited soft drinks, juices, tea, coffee, water and selected beers, cocktails and wines, afternoon tea, the minibar refilled with soft drinks and beer, and 20% off destination dining, diving, water sports and body massages. Meals are booked ahead, all 3 courses in one restaurant.

The Banyan Tree Villa Lifestyle package, from 3 nights, brings all meals and drinks and one cruise or night fishing trip. Guests on half and full board in 2024 and 2025 report supplements on many dishes; in November 2025 a guest welcomed the free water in the villa and at meals.

What is the spa like?

The resort holds Banyan Tree’s Wellbeing Sanctuary designation, with a resident practitioner for acupuncture, cupping and sound healing, a wellbeing studio and Lagoon Floating Therapy, according to the wellness page.

The site publishes neither the spa’s size nor the number of rooms, and no official page mentions a sauna or steam room, which Google Hotels lists among the amenities.

Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?

Treatments are paid for, with tax and service charge included, according to the spa menu; each visit includes 30 minutes of Calm Time with refreshments. All-inclusive takes 20% off body massages; the Banyan Tree Romance offer includes a 60-minute couples’ massage, the Wellbeing Sanctuary offer a 60-minute massage per adult.

No page publishes a day pass for anyone not staying on the island; a guest wrote of a day visit in May 2025 without saying how it was booked or whether it included the spa. Children are admitted only for a treatment of their own, with an adult.

What are the spa’s opening hours?

From 11am to 8pm, according to the spa page. The spa menu asks guests to arrive 15 minutes before a treatment; cancelling with less than 4 hours’ notice costs 50%. The wellbeing sessions run from 7am to 6pm, at most 6 people each.

Prices include tax and service charge. In April 2025 a couple wrote that it was the best massage they had had on the islands.

Is it good for children?

Children of all ages are welcome, according to Booking.com, which charges them as adults from 12; but there is no kids’ club. The family page offers the Bubblemaker dive for children of 8 or 9, night fishing, the Marine Lab programme and a Maldivian cooking class; the festive programme adds a cruise with Santa, beach games and a pool party.

The Banyan Tree Family offer, from 3 nights according to its terms, lets 1 child stay and eat free in the Oceanview and Beachfront villas and 2 in the Grand Beachfront, the one with a sofa bed for up to 5. The spa admits children only for a treatment of their own.

Google Hotels’ prices for the Maldives, on the other hand, include taxes and fees, and so do the spa and activity prices. Late check-out until 6pm costs 50% of the day’s Best Available Rate.
