Taj Coral Reef Resort & Spa, 62 thatched villas on the beach and over the lagoon, on heart-shaped Hembadhu in North Malé Atoll, 45 minutes by speedboat from Malé
For couples and young families who want a reef from the villa steps and an all-inclusive plan, Taj Coral Reef starts at $637 for one night, 2 adults, 5–8 April 2027: the lowest price any seller showed on Google. Anyone set on a private pool will find one only in the 2 suites.
Co-founder & CEOMarco Di CesareHe spent weeks comparing hotels and kept finding that the detail deciding the trip was missing from the hotel website. 10 years in marketing technology, 2 of them building with AI.About MarcoHow we write the guideLinkedIn
I would ask for a Premium Water Villa: 85 m² on stilts, sleeping up to 4, with a private sundeck, sun loungers, a view of the reef and a wide ladder down into the lagoon.
The week to consider
Consider 28 November–4 December 2026: single nights for 2 adults ranged from $747 to $820 on Google, read 12 October 2026. The dearest week shown, 24–30 January 2027, ranged from $870 to $1,404.
Taxes and spa extras
Spa prices are in US dollars before service charges and GST, and an appointment beyond operating hours costs 1.5 times the treatment price. The all-inclusive rate adds local taxes unless it is already tax-inclusive.
A day on the sandbank
The resort offers a snorkelling day at its sandbank in the middle of the ocean, an easy-access base to see marine life; it runs in 2-hour slots, with an umbrella, towels and drinking water included.
What Taj Coral Reef is
Taj Coral Reef stands alone on Hembadhu, a small heart-shaped island in North Malé Atoll that the official fact sheet places on a coral atoll a thousand years old, 45 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport. Taj, the Indian Hotels Company's luxury brand, runs 62 thatched villas there: 60 on the beach and over the lagoon, from 58 to 85 m², and 2 two-storey suites of 215 m² with a plunge pool. Booking.com and the Michelin Guide still list it under its former name, Vivanta by Taj Coral Reef.
Guests come for the water and the table. The house reef starts off the beach and under the water villas, where guests in 2025 and 2026 saw reef sharks, rays and shoals of fish; the dive centre takes divers to a wreck that sank off the island about 30 years ago, and volunteers plant coral in the nursery. Of the 500 most recent Google reviews with text, 92% of those discussing the location are positive and 87% of those discussing the staff; the Indian dishes at Bokkura come up again and again.
It is a resort to choose for what it is: a small island of thatched villas where the day is spent between the reef, the table and the lagoon. The all-inclusive plan does not cover dives, the manta trip, water sports or photographs beyond the free shoot. In July 2026 the beach was narrowed in several places by erosion and protected by sandbags; the resort acknowledged it in its reply, saying renovation plans are under review.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 20 August 2019 to 1 October 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in North Malé Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The resort's marine team guides snorkellers on the house reef and teaches beginners in the pool; its PADI dive centre goes down to the wreck off the island. Guests can plant coral frames in the nursery with the Carecations programme, and from January to April the boat goes looking for mantas 20 minutes away.
Indian therapies rooted in Ayurveda: a 60-minute Vishranti massage costs $225, the 120-minute Vishramā with a hot herbal compress $450, and Somā for two $730, plus service charge and GST. The spa has 2 single and 2 couples' suites with a soak tub, a steam room, and opens from 8am to 8pm.

In July 2026 the resort acknowledged, in a public reply on Google, that part of the beach has eroded, and the condition of the reef: in July and August 2026, 2 reviews describe many corals as dead or damaged.
No villa has its own pool except the 2 Nirvana Presidential Suites, with a plunge pool. The Superior Beach Villa sleeps 2 and takes no extra bed; the other types take up to 4. Children of every age are welcome, according to Booking.com: under 5 they stay free, and there is a children’s pool and a toddler menu that parents praise. There is no kids’ club, and the spa admits no one under 16.

Taj Coral Reef reviews
The platforms' scores, read on 3 October 2026, and what guests write about the reef, the food and the villas.
On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.7/5 from 1,038 ratings. The figures by theme come from the 500 most recent reviews with text, from August 2019 to October 2026, 160 of them written since January 2025: 424 give 5 stars, and many thank the restaurant staff by name. They are accounts of stays we have not verified.

Google
A beach villa and a water villa
In October 2026 a guest who split the stay between a Deluxe Beach Villa and a water villa liked the quick access to the beach from one and to the reef from the other. The resort is a little further from the airport, they write, and the clear lagoon and the quiet make up for it.
In September 2026 parents with a toddler praised the food, the children's menu and the packed meal the kitchen made for him. Service at the restaurant was slow, they add, and the rooms felt more standard than 5-star, with woodwork in need of care.
In July 2026 a couple chose the resort for the speedboat, 35 minutes in their account, and the house reef. Their all-inclusive covered the transfers, a 60-minute massage and a photo shoot, and they made their first dive to 10 or 12 metres.
In July 2026 a couple who know the Maldives well found the beach cut back by erosion, with large sandbags and the sea close to the vegetation, and many corals on the house reef damaged. The food and the staff, they write, were excellent.
In March 2026 a guest on the à la carte all-inclusive plan recommends the water villas, set on a calm lagoon, against the beach villas, where there are almost always waves. From 5 nights a massage and a photo session were included.
In November 2025 a family with 2 children explored the reef every day and saw rays and reef sharks. The island is small and there is no kids' club, they write, but it felt safe and there was plenty for the children to do.
What people ask before booking Taj Coral Reef, with answers from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.
What kind of resort is Taj Coral Reef?
A 5-star resort, as Google Hotels lists it, run by Taj, the luxury brand of the Indian Hotels Company, and the only one on Hembadhu, a small heart-shaped island in North Malé Atoll. The official site counts 62 thatched villas, 60 villas and 2 suites, and names a house reef, a wreck about 30 years old and a PADI dive centre among its highlights.
Booking.com and the Michelin Guide still list it as Vivanta by Taj Coral Reef, its former name. Tripadvisor gave it a Travellers' Choice award for 2026, and its sister resort, Taj Exotica, is in South Malé Atoll.
Which villas are there and how big are they?
4 types, according to the villas page. On the beach: the Superior Beach Villa, 58 m², for 2 guests, with a king bed, of which there are 12; the Deluxe Beach Villa, 66 m², with double or twin beds, for up to 4. Over the water: the Premium Water Villa, 85 m², double or twin, for up to 4, with a ladder into the lagoon. On the beach again, the Nirvana Presidential Suite, a 2-storey villa of 215 m² with 2 bedrooms, a plunge pool and room for 6.
Every villa has a deck with loungers, a daybed, an outdoor shower, a home theatre system, tea and coffee and basic Wi-Fi; premium Wi-Fi costs extra. The site does not say how many villas belong to each type except the Superior. The official fact sheet gives the Deluxe a king bed, the villas page a double. Guests in 2026 found the villas spacious; in July that year the resort wrote that renovation plans are under review.
Where is it, and is the island quiet?
On Hembadhu in North Malé Atoll, 45 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport, according to the official site; Google Hotels puts it 36 km from the airport, and the Google listing gives «North Male, Atoll 20195». VARU by Atmosphere is the nearest resort, about 3.5 km away on Tripadvisor's map.
Guests describe a small, quiet island; anyone after music and lively evenings should choose a larger one. The resort arranges Malé city tours, dolphin cruises most evenings and a boduberu drumming performance.
How do you get there from Malé, and what does the speedboat cost?
By speedboat, about 45 minutes from Velana airport, according to the official FAQ, which asks guests to book the transfer with reservations at least 24 hours before arriving. Guests in 2026 timed the crossing at 20 to 45 minutes, and one in May 2026 warns anyone prone to seasickness.
No official page prints the price, and the Google Hotels card lists the airport shuttle at an extra charge. The International Escapes offer includes shared return speedboat transfers from 3 nights, the Suite Surprises offer a one-way transfer subject to availability, and Booking.com sells an all-inclusive rate with free transfers.
Can you arrive by car or park?
No: Hembadhu is an island reached by speedboat from the airport, and the official site lists the speedboat as the only transport. There is no road and no car park; buggies take guests round the island, as 2 guests in 2026 describe.
How do you get into the sea?
From the beach, straight in front of the beach villas, which the official site lists with direct beach access, or by the wide ladder from the deck of each Premium Water Villa into the lagoon.
In July 2026 the beach was narrowed in several places by erosion and protected by sandbags, which the resort acknowledged in its reply to a guest. A guest in March 2026 found the lagoon under the water villas calm, and the beach side almost always with waves.
Is there a house reef you can swim to?
Yes. The official site describes the villas set over a house reef, and the experiences page offers guided snorkelling there with the marine team, with a lesson in the pool for beginners. Guests in 2026 snorkelled straight from the beach and from the water villas, and one in March 2026 saw reef sharks almost every time.
In July and August 2026, 2 guests describe a reef full of fish, with many corals dead or damaged, and the resort acknowledged the reef’s condition in its reply to the first; new coral can be planted in the resort’s nursery. Snorkel gear for 2 is included on the all-inclusive plan and, the resort wrote in June 2026, may be kept overnight.
What pools are there?
An infinity-edge outdoor pool flanked by the ocean and the palms, according to the spa page, and a children's pool, according to the official FAQ; Open The Grill and the Reef Bar stand beside it. The only private pools are the plunge pools of the 2 Nirvana Presidential Suites.
Is the pool heated, and when is it open?
The official site gives neither a temperature nor opening hours for the pool, and says nothing about heating. Google lists a lifeguard.
Where can you eat, and until when?
According to the dining pages: Bokkura, on the beach, for breakfast from 7 to 10am, lunch from noon to 2.30pm and dinner from 7 to 9.30pm; Open The Grill, global grills by the pool from 7 to 9.30pm; the Reef Bar, open-air over the pool, from 11am to midnight. The all-inclusive offer adds a pizzeria, and in-villa dining runs 24 hours. The dress code is smart casual.
The fact sheet lists private dinners on the sandbank, on the Moondeck, in the lagoon and at a beach barbecue, and breakfast on a dhoni round the island. The dining pages also show Mediterraneo, 24 Degrees and the Equator Bar, which belong to Taj Exotica, the sister resort in South Malé Atoll, with its own telephone number.
What meal plans are there, and what do they include?
The Coral All Inclusive offer, valid all year, covers meals at Bokkura, the pizzeria and Open The Grill, branded spirits, beers, wines, cocktails and mocktails from 11am to midnight, including the minibar, the gym, Wi-Fi for 4 devices, snorkel gear for 2 per villa, a canoe, a trial dive in the pool and snorkel lessons twice a week. Stays of 5 nights or more get a free 45-minute aromatherapy massage per person; shorter stays get it at half price.
A guest in July 2026 says the plan covered the speedboat, a 60-minute massage and a photo shoot; the offer page lists neither the transfer nor the shoot. Breakfast-only member rates and a breakfast-and-dinner package exist too. Excursions, water sports and photographs beyond the free shoot are paid for; a guest in September 2026 writes that the shoot lasts 30 minutes and comes with one print, and that each further photograph costs $30.
What is the spa like?
J Wellness Circle is Taj's Indian spa, built on Ayurveda and yoga. Its menu lists 2 single and 2 couples' treatment suites, each with a shower and soak tub, a wet area with a steam room and separate changing rooms with lockers for men and women, a unisex gym and a beauty salon. It gives no floor area, and no official page mentions a sauna, which Google lists.
Yoga and meditation sessions are offered, the official FAQ says. Guests are asked to arrive 30 minutes before a treatment to use the steam room.
Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?
Treatments are paid for: the spa menu prices them from $135 for a 30-minute eye therapy, plus service charge and GST. The all-inclusive plan gives a 45-minute aromatherapy massage per person from 5 nights, half price for shorter stays. No official page publishes a day pass or access for anyone not staying, and the island is reached only by boat.
What are the spa's opening hours?
From 8am to 8pm every day, and the gym from 6am to 10pm, according to the spa menu; Google Hotels lists the gym as open 24 hours. Treatments outside those hours cost 1.5 times the price, and early or late slots are requested by 6pm. Cancelling with less than 3 hours' notice costs 50%.
Which treatments are offered, and at what price?
From the menu, in US dollars before service charge and GST: Vishramā and Trupti, 120 minutes, $450; Pehlwān Mālish, the wrestlers' massage, 90 minutes, $335; Indian deep-tissue, relaxing and energising massages at $225 for 60 minutes and $335 for 90; Champi head massage $180; coconut and herbal body rituals $180; the signature facial $335.
For 2, Somā, 120 minutes with a floral bath and sparkling wine, costs $730, and Abhisarana, 90 minutes with a rose-petal soak, $680; Sukha, 210 minutes, $630. The spa uses products made for J Wellness Circle from Indian herbs.
Is it good for children?
Children of every age are welcome, according to Booking.com: under 5 they stay free, from 5 to 12 at a children's rate, an extra child over 5 costs $100 a day, and the Green Tax adds $12 per child per night. The villas page offers cribs up to 2 years and rollaway beds at a charge, except in the Superior Beach Villa, which sleeps 2.
There is a children’s pool and, parents write, a toddler menu. There is no kids’ club, and the spa admits no one under 16. Parents of toddlers recommend the beach villas, with the sand at the door.
What is on the island besides the villas?
According to the official site: the PADI dive centre, the coral nursery, a gym, the infinity pool and children's pool, J Wellness Circle, a concierge, currency exchange and 24-hour in-villa dining. Non-motorised water sports, kayaks, paddleboards, windsurfing and a catamaran, are listed in the fact sheet, with coaching at a charge.
The experiences page and the fact sheet add big-game and sustainable fishing, the sandbank in 2-hour slots, dolphin and manta trips, a photographer and Malé city tours. A doctor is on call, Google lists, and a guest in July 2026 praised the resort's doctor and nurses.
What offers are there?
Read on 3 October 2026 on the offers page: Coral All Inclusive, valid all year; Suite Surprises, 15% off the suites with breakfast and a one-way transfer subject to availability; members' breakfast rates for stays of 3 nights or more; and the Taj Holidays International Escapes package, from 3 nights, with breakfast and dinner, a 60-minute spa therapy and shared return speedboat transfers.
Carecations, from 2 nights, adds breakfast, one main meal and a coral-planting dive with PADI and Green Fins instructors, and 15% off spa therapies. Booking.com lists a cake, a bath decoration and a chocolate platter for honeymoon packages.
Can you get married or renew vows at Taj Coral Reef?
The events page offers Taj's Timeless Weddings, with Haldi, Mehendi and Sangeet ceremonies, vow renewals, honeymoon packages and photo shoots, and the fact sheet an all-inclusive Renew your Vows package with a photo shoot and a champagne breakfast. No page gives a price, a guest capacity or whether a legally binding marriage can be held.
The only room listed for events is Seaboard, a boardroom of 51 m² for up to 30 people. A couple in May 2026 renewed their vows on the island and found it perfectly organised.
Is there a New Year's Eve dinner?
No official page read publishes a New Year's Eve programme or price. The terms of the resort's offers warn that supplements may be charged on 24 and 31 December and for lunch on 25 December and 1 January, and the Google Hotels calendar, read on 6 October 2026, showed no price for any night from 23 December 2026 to 5 January 2027. A guest saw in the new year at the resort in 2022–2023.
Can you play golf?
No: the island has no golf course or driving range, and neither the official site nor its offers publish a golf package or green fee.
When is it open, and when is the best season?
All year: the offers are valid round the year and no official page announces a closure. On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, 102 of the 117 nights from 7 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price; 25 October and 23 December to 5 January showed none, which does not mean the resort was closed.
The resort names January to April as the best time to meet the mantas, at a site 20 minutes away, on its experiences page. In February 2026 guests had several days of rough sea and found a sheltered stretch where they could still snorkel.
How much does a night cost?
On Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night, taxes and fees included: $714 on 7 October 2026, $1,312 on 16 October, $1,390 on 18 October, $824 on 27 October, $818 on 6 November, $1,167 on 15 November, $705 on 13 December, $1,240 on 22 December, $749 on 17 January 2027 and $1,091 on 28 January 2027. For 7 October the official website asked $796.
The calendar shows the lowest seller and names no villa or meal plan: for 7 October the $714 was goseek.com's, and Agoda and Booking.com showed the same $796 as the official site for a Superior Beach Villa. From 23 December to 5 January no night had a price. The speedboat is not included unless the rate says so.
What do the reviews say?
On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.7/5 from 1,038 ratings, Tripadvisor 4.7/5 from 2,714, with value at 4.4 and a Travellers' Choice award for 2026, and Booking.com 8.9/10 from 199, with staff at 9.6 and value for money at 8.5.
In the 500 most recent Google reviews with text, 92% of those discussing the location are positive, 87% of those discussing the staff and services, and 81% of those discussing the villas. Praise goes to the reef under the villas, Bokkura’s Indian dishes and the waiters, often thanked by name. Reviews mention villas whose renovation is still under review, a beach narrowed in several places by erosion in 2026 and extras excluded from the all-inclusive plan.
What taxes and charges are added?
Google Hotels prices for the Maldives include taxes and fees: on 7 October 2026 the official website's listing on Google Hotels showed $796 for a night, $196 of it taxes. The spa menu adds service charge and GST to its prices, and the terms of the offers say local taxes are extra unless the rate already includes them.
The official pages read do not give the rates of GST or service charge. Booking.com says a Green Tax of $12 per child per night is added, while the adults' is already in its price.
What time is check-in and check-out?
Check-out is by noon. Check-in is from 3pm according to the official site's hotel information, Google and Booking.com, while the official FAQ gives 2pm; the FAQ asks guests to say in advance if they will arrive earlier or leave later.
