VARU suits couples, honeymooners and families who want the speedboat, meals, drinks and minibar in one plan; the lowest seller showed $796 for one night in April 2027. Anyone choosing an island for snorkelling straight from the villa should know accounts of the reef here vary.

Like a regular

A guest wading through a water villa’s infinity pool, with the turquoise lagoon all around.
  1. The beach villa at sunset

I would ask for a Beach Villa with Pool: the resort lists direct beach access and a sunset view, with a deck to hear the waves from, a day bed and a whirlpool bath.

  2. The week that costs less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026 the lowest week is 22–28 April 2027: 7 nights at $796. The dearest night shown, 24 December 2026, is $6,105.

  3. On top of the rate

The speedboat to the island and back is complimentary, the resort says. Booking.com lists a green tax of $12 per child per night and babysitting at an additional $25.74 net an hour per child.

  4. Snorkelling by boat

4 guests who wrote between December 2025 and August 2026 praise the snorkelling trips by boat; one calls them free and daily, another puts the reefs 15 minutes away.

What VARU is

VARU by Atmosphere stands on Madivaru, on the north-western edge of North Malé Atoll, and is managed by Atmosphere Core, the group behind Atmosphere Kanifushi and RAAYA; its Google reviews begin in August 2019. The February 2026 brochure counts 111 villas in 7 categories: 42 on the beach, from the Beach Villa to the three 2-storey Majlis Residences, and 69 over the water on 3 jetties, Manta, Dolphin and Turtle.

The reason to choose it is the VARU Plan, the only way to stay: the return speedboat, every meal at Lime & Chili, premium spirits, unlimited cocktails and more than 40 wines, a minibar restocked daily, 2 snorkelling trips a day, non-motorised water sports and the On The Move kids' club. Meals at Kaagé, NÜ and Charcoal come with the nights booked, one for 3 nights, 2 for 4 and 3 for 6; from the fourth night the plan adds a 45-minute massage for each adult, sunset fishing and a cruise.

Anyone choosing the Maldives for snorkelling straight from the villa should know that accounts of the reef here vary. Some guests saw turtles and sharks from their water villa, others found almost nothing near the villas and saved their snorkelling for the boat trips. In July, November and December 2025 wind and rain took days, trips or water sports away, outside the plan Teppanyaki Over Water, Cellar at NÜ, diving and jet skis are charged, with tax on top, and on Google Hotels, read on 6 October 2026, a night for 2 ran from $1,003 in October to $1,942 on Christmas Eve.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do VARU’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

8 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests write about the speedboat that reaches the island from the airport in 40 to 45 minutes, the turquoise lagoon and the sunsets seen from Bay Rouge.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests like the villas for their space and for housekeeping twice a day; the infinity pools and the ladder from the deck down into the lagoon come up often.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The personal hosts, often thanked by name, housekeeping twice a day and the care taken over honeymooners and over children at the On The Move club come up most.

  4. Breakfast

6 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The buffet at Lime & Chili is liked for its fruit, eggs cooked to order, pancakes and the Maldivian breakfast.

  5. Price

6 in 10 guests who mention the price find it fair. When they write about the bill, guests cite the VARU Plan and what it covers: the speedboat, à la carte dinners, drinks and the snorkelling trips.

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 17 February 2021 to 29 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in North Malé Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in North Malé Atoll:

Good to know before you book

  • On the reef near the villas the Google reviews disagree: between June 2022 and September 2026, 6, 3 of them in 2026, write that the island has no natural reef or that there is little to see near the villas; between March 2025 and June 2026, 4 describe fish, turtles or sharks seen from the villa or the shore. The plan includes 2 snorkelling boat trips a day, and reef sharks come to NÜ in the evening.

  • The VARU Plan grows with the nights. Below 3 nights there is no à la carte meal, and the massage, the excursion and sunset fishing start at 4; Teppanyaki Over Water, Cellar at NÜ, diving, jet skis and turtle trips are extra, with tax on top. The Book Direct offer promises a seaplane, while every other page speaks of a speedboat.

  • Wind and rain can take days away. In July, November and December 2025 guests lost days, trips, paddleboarding or the use of their pool to storms.

  • There are no bicycles and no buggies for everyone, according to guests of July 2025 and February 2026: most places are a 7 to 10-minute walk.

  • Bookings through Booking.com are paid by bank transfer before arrival; 3 Google reviews, from April, May and August 2026, describe refunds that were long in coming or never came.

Questions before you go

What people ask before booking VARU by Atmosphere, with sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.

What kind of resort is VARU by Atmosphere?

A 5-star all-inclusive resort on Madivaru, an island on the north-western edge of North Malé Atoll, managed by Atmosphere Core, as the Green Globe release of April 2024 says. The resort brochure of February 2026 counts 111 villas in 7 categories, 6 restaurants and 2 bars; Tripadvisor says 108 villas.

Google reviews of the resort begin in August 2019. In June 2026 the group announced a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice award for VARU, in October 2025 it called Kaagé a Travellers' Choice winner for the fifth year running, and the island holds Green Globe certification.

Which villas are there and how big are they?

7 types, according to the villa pages and the brochure. On the beach: Beach Villa, 16, at 75 m²; Beach Villa with Pool, 15, at 90 m² with a 10 m² pool; Two Bedroom Beach Villa with Pool, 8, at 175 m²; Majlis Residence, 3, at 330 m² with a 45 m² pool. Over the water: Water Villa, 29, at 95 m²; Water Villa with Pool, 39, at 95 m² with a 10 m² pool; the Water Suite, one, at 155 m² with a 15 m² pool. Those are the brochure’s sizes; the villa pages, read on 15 October 2026, give a larger total area for each, in the same order 79, 102, 184 and 436 m² on the beach and 96, 110 and 177 m² over the water.

The website's «Total Area» is larger for every villa, from 103 m² for the Water Villa to 715 m² for the Majlis Residence, and the Beach Villa plan counts 10 villas where the brochure counts 16. On 7 October 2026 the website, on Google, asked for two $1,014 for a Beach Villa, $1,157 for a Water Villa, $1,279 for a Beach Villa with Pool, $1,485 for a Water Villa with Pool, $2,328 for the 2-bedroom villa and $3,409 for the Majlis Residence.

Where is it, and is the island quiet?

On Madivaru Island, North Malé Atoll, as the contact page says, on the atoll's north-western edge; measured on the map it lies about 38 km in a straight line from Velana airport, where Booking.com says 6.2 miles. A guest who stayed in July 2026 walked round the whole island in 15 minutes.

Guests describe it as calm and uncrowded, even close to full in March 2026; you get around on foot, and most places are a 7 to 10-minute walk.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the transfer cost?

By speedboat from Velana International Airport, included both ways in the VARU Plan, with boduberu drums and champagne on arrival, as the plan brochure says. The plan and the resort brochure give 40 minutes, the home page and Booking.com 45.

There is no seaplane, although the Book Direct offer lists «Complimentary Roundtrip Seaplane transfers»; the honeymoon and returning-guest offers say speedboat. The Google Hotels card lists the airport shuttle as an extra charge, and Booking.com a paid shuttle: on the plan it is included.

Can you drive there or park?

No: the island is reached only by boat and has no roads for cars. The Google Hotels card lists free parking, an error for an island. On Madivaru you walk; guests of July 2025 and February 2026 found no bicycles and no buggies for everyone.

How do you get into the sea?

From every beach villa straight onto the sand, as the villa pages say, and from the water villas down a ladder from the deck. A guest who stayed in July 2026 found the beach by Bay Rouge and the water sports centre the easiest place to swim, when red flags kept the water-villa side rough for much of the stay.

For safety the plan bars outside boats and excursions by outside operators.

Is there a reef you can swim to?

There is a reef around the island, and guests disagree on it. In January 2026 an Italian guest found a shallow reef full of fish under the water villa, with rays, mantas and small sharks; in May 2026 a couple saw turtles and sharks from theirs, and reef sharks visit NÜ in the evening. In March, June and September 2026 others saw little near the villas.

The VARU Plan includes 2 snorkelling shuttles a day to nearby sites, booked ahead and weather permitting, and lends masks and fins for the stay; a guest of April 2026 put the reefs 15 minutes away by boat. No official page gives the distance to the house reef or a way in from the beach.

What pools are there?

The main pool is Bay Rouge's, an infinity pool by the bar facing the sunset, open from 7am to 7pm, according to the bar page and the plan. Private infinity pools measure 10 m² in the Beach and Water Villas with Pool and the 2-bedroom villa, 15 m² at the Water Suite and 45 m² at the Majlis Residence, as the brochure says; the villa pages give 9 m², 14 m² at the Water Suite and 37 m² at the Majlis Residence.

In strong wind, as in December 2025, the pool of an exposed water villa gets little use.

Are the pools heated, and when are they open?

Bay Rouge's pool opens from 7am to 7pm every day, according to the bar page and the plan brochure. No source says whether it is heated; the villa pools are private and always open to their guests, and in December 2025 one guest found the pool of a sheltered water villa warm.

Where do you eat, and until when?

According to the dining page: Lime & Chili, the buffet, breakfast from 7am to 10.30am, lunch from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, brunch on Tuesdays from noon to 3pm and dinner from 7pm to 10pm; Kaagé, Maldivian, dinner from 7pm to 10pm except Fridays and lunch 3 days a week; NÜ, Mediterranean seafood over the water with a rooftop bar, lunch 3 days and dinner 6; Charcoal, the beach grill, dinner from 7pm to 10pm 6 days a week; Teppanyaki Over Water, sittings at 7pm and 9pm; Cellar at NÜ, a wine lounge over the lagoon, from 6pm to 10pm.

Bay Rouge, the pool bar, is open from 10am to 1am with snacks in the afternoon. Lime & Chili holds the Indian Ocean Gala Dinner on Fridays and its Asian night on Wednesdays, according to the resort’s newest file, the March 2026 brochure, and the plan, read on 15 October 2026. There is no underwater restaurant; NÜ, Teppanyaki Over Water and Cellar at NÜ stand over the lagoon.

What does the VARU Plan include?

It is the only way to stay, all-inclusive: the return speedboat, every meal at Lime & Chili, snacks at Bay Rouge, premium spirits, wines and beers, unlimited cocktails, more than 40 wines, a minibar of wine, beer, soft drinks and snacks restocked daily, the gym and tennis court, non-motorised water sports, 2 snorkelling trips a day, the kids' club and daily entertainment, as the plan brochure lists.

A lunch or dinner at Kaagé, NÜ or Charcoal, drinks included and booked ahead, comes per guest with the length of stay: one meal for 3 nights, 2 for 4 or 5, 3 for 6 or 7, 4 for 8 to 10, then one more every 3 nights. From 4 nights the plan adds a 45-minute massage per adult, sunset fishing once and a sunset or stargazing cruise. Teppanyaki Over Water and Cellar at NÜ are charged, the first 2 dives are 20% off, and the plan ends at 11am on the day you leave.

What is the spa like?

ELE|NA Ayur stands over the water, the plan and the home page say, and offers Maldivian rituals with warm sand pouches and coconut shells, massages, body wraps, facials with Elena Essentia products and sound healing, according to the spa menu; the brochure puts a gym and a salon with it.

No official source gives the spa's size, its number of rooms, a sauna or a steam room; Booking.com lists a sauna, which the resort's own pages do not mention.

Is the spa included, is there a charge, and can outside guests use it?

On the VARU Plan each adult aged 18 or over has one 45-minute treatment for 4 to 7 nights, 2 for 8 to 11, 3 for 12 to 15 and 4 for 16 to 19, from the plan's own list: a jet-lag facial, Yogayaam, the Stress Buster massage or the Tan Accelerator, as the plan and the spa menu say. Other treatments are charged, plus tax and service.

No page publishes a day pass for anyone not staying on the island, and the plan bars outside boats. Treatments are for guests aged 18 and over.

What are the spa's hours?

The website publishes no general hours; the festive calendar holds spa workshops at 10am, 11am and 2pm. The spa menu asks you to arrive 15 minutes early and to cancel 5 hours ahead for a treatment and 24 for a package, or pay 50%, and 100% for a no-show.

Which treatments are offered, and at what price?

According to the spa menu: the Veli Bon'dli sand-pouch massage, the Kashi Nashi coconut-shell massage, hot-stone, Thai and sports massages cost $120 for 50 minutes and $150 for 75; Balinese, Swedish and bamboo massages $110 and $140; the 90-minute Kan'duge ritual $200 a person or $360 for a couple.

A coconut body scrub costs $60 for 30 minutes and an anti-ageing facial $145 for 60 minutes. Prices are in dollars, before government taxes and service charges.

Is it good for children?

Yes. On The Move, the kids' club, runs activities every day on the plan, and the festive calendar adds crafts, cinema, games and a children's mocktail class; families in 2025 and 2026 praised the club and a kitchen that prepared baby food. According to Booking.com, children under 4 must stay with a parent at the club, and babysitting costs $25.74 an hour per child.

On Booking.com children of all ages are welcome, those 12 and over pay as adults and under-2s eat free; from 2 to 11 they pay a supplement the same page gives as $140 in one place and $120 in another, plus a green tax of $12 a night. Cots are free for under-2s and there are no extra beds; the 2-bedroom villa and the Majlis Residence take up to 6 guests.

What is there on the island besides the villas?

Disport, the sports centre with a gym, a floodlit tennis court, badminton and beach volleyball, the dive and water sports centre, the spa and salon, the kids' club, a wedding pavilion, a clinic and the harbour, all marked on the island map. Yoga, Pilates and strength classes run every week, the plan says.
