Niva Velassaru suits couples and families who want the Maldives without a seaplane, from $440 for one night, 2 adults, from 1 May 2027: the lowest price any seller showed on Google. For a children’s club, look elsewhere: the island has none.

Like a regular

A guest on a water villa’s deck looks over the lagoon; beyond, the row of villas and the beach with its parasols.
  1. The villa to ask for

I would ask for a Beach Villa with Pool: 116 m², on the beach, with a plunge pool. A guest on a fourth stay, writing in June 2025, stayed there with children aged 3 and 6 and called it spacious, beautifully maintained and private.

  2. The weeks that cost less

In the calendar read on 12 October 2026 the lowest run is 1 to 7 May 2027: 7 nights at $440. The dearest week, 27 December 2026 to 2 January 2027, runs from $964 to $1,172 a night.

  3. The reef and its biologist

On Sundays from 5pm to 6pm the resident marine biologist gives a presentation at the Pavilion on the marine life of the Maldives. The house reef is a few kicks from shore, with snorkelling gear free.

What Niva Velassaru is

Velassaru is chosen for ease: the resort’s speedboat takes 25 minutes from Velana airport, with no seaplane, and the island can be walked round in a quarter of an hour, gardens inside and beaches on every side. There are 129 villas in 9 types, from 75 to 270 m², and 54 have a pool of their own. The most numerous, the 49 Deluxe Villas, sit in the garden a few metres from the sand, with no pool. Anyone who wants sand at the door books a Beach Villa with Pool; anyone who wants to step down into the lagoon from the deck, one of the water villas.

Velassaru is at its best at the table. Vela changes the theme of its buffet every night, Sora serves Japanese cooking above the lagoon, Sand grills fish on the sand, Etesian has a Mediterranean menu and a wine cellar, and Turquoise stays open from noon to 10pm. The LIME spa has 10 rooms over the water and an infinity pool above the lagoon. In the 500 most recent Google reviews, 87% of those who mention the staff and services are positive.

Extras add up. On Booking.com the shared speedboat costs $187 per adult, water in the restaurants is charged and the treatments have no published price list. Being close to Malé also puts a shipyard’s cranes on the far horizon.

In the Lumina Guide

Lumina Guide 2027

Velassaru is 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport, with no seaplane to catch: an island you can walk round, with 129 villas, 5 restaurants, an overwater spa and a reef in front of the villas.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

The scores come from 500 Google reviews with text, left from 1 August 2018 to 30 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in South Malé Atoll: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in South Malé Atoll:

Price: for two on the night of 1 May 2027, from $440 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

From Vela’s buffet to Japanese over the water

Sora, at the end of a jetty, brings Peruvian and Maldivian touches to Japanese cooking, with reef sharks and rays passing under the dining room. The reef in front of the villas

From the beach or the steps of the water villas you reach the house reef, with coral nurseries around the island; masks and fins are free. In September 2026 a couple could see plenty of sharks from their deck; the resort’s map marks the areas of strong current and warns that there is no lifeguard.

Good to know before you book

  • The site’s rates are quoted before service and taxes: the resort gives 10% service charge and 16% GST, with Green Tax on top. Source: nivavelassaru.com

  • The shared speedboat is charged separately. Booking.com, read on 3 October 2026, asks $187 per adult and $93.50 per child aged 2 to 12, «not included in the booking price», and does not allow transfers arranged by anyone else; the resort’s own site says only that shared transfers are arranged as part of the booking. The Summer Soul Vacation offer, until October 2026, includes them.

  • The 49 Deluxe Villas are in the garden, «just meters from the beach» according to the site, and have no pool: if you want sand at the door, book a Beach Villa with Pool.

  • Malé is close: far off on the right side of the atoll you can see a few cranes and part of a shipyard. The easy arrival also brings families with young children to the island.

  • Water is free in the villa but not in the restaurants, according to the site’s FAQ. Velassaru Indulgence, the plan with drinks, leaves out the minibar, in-villa dining, premium brands and themed events, and needs at least 3 nights.

  • The official site’s FAQ mixes up 2 resorts: it describes an all-inclusive package «at Niva Dhigali», the Capers, Battuta and Jade restaurants and the PLAY Kids Club, which all belong to the other Niva. Velassaru has no kids’ club.

  • Between March 2025 and March 2026, 7 Google reviews describe rooms and villas showing wear or due a renovation; Tripadvisor’s review summary, read on 3 October 2026, says a few guests find the furnishings outdated.

A pool above the waves

In September 2026 a couple in a Water Bungalow with Pool found it completely worth it: lying in their pool listening to the waves was the highlight of the trip. The island looked even better than in the photographs, greenery, lagoon and sky in one view.

Sharks below the deck

From the deck of their Water Villa, in September 2026, 2 guests could see the reef and plenty of sharks. The island can be walked round in about 10 minutes without ever feeling crowded; on their last days strong waves made the sea boom around the villa.

4 restaurants, all to book

A family on holiday in August 2026 put the beach among the 3 best they have seen in the Maldives and praise the 4 à la carte restaurants, all needing a reservation. Their private pool was smaller than expected; the main pool, about 1.5 metres deep, was the right temperature.

Cranes in the distance

On their fourth trip to the Maldives, in May 2026, 2 guests in a Beach Villa with Pool noticed a few cranes and a shipyard far off, without it spoiling the mood. On the all-inclusive plan they ate very well; they skipped the spa treatments, finding the prices extremely high.

The villa and the loungers

In February 2026 a guest found her villa dark, smelling of damp, with a worn mattress and pillows and a dusty air-conditioning filter. It was not on the beach, as she had understood, and the loungers were taken by morning. Only the food redeemed the stay.

The arrival and the Water Villa

In March 2026 a couple learnt at the airport that the resort was full and were sent to Kurumba first. Their Water Villa felt worn, and in front of the water villas the sea floor is covered with coral fragments and algae: you can swim, but not stand. The best beaches, they write, are near the pool and the restaurants.

Questions before you go

The questions people ask before booking Niva Velassaru, answered from sources read between 3 and 6 October 2026.

What kind of resort is Niva Velassaru?

A resort on its own island in South Malé Atoll, «a Niva resort by Versa Hospitality», as the official site signs itself. It used to be called Velassaru Maldives: the old velassaru.com address now leads to nivavelassaru.com, and many pages still say Velassaru. Google rates it 5 stars. There are 129 villas in 9 types, adding up the official fact sheet: the same number Tripadvisor gives.

The site does not say when the resort opened; the first Google reviews date from 2011. In September 2026, replying to a guest on Tripadvisor, the general manager said the management team is the same and that what has changed is the loyalty programme, now Versa Keys.

Which villas can you choose and how big are they?

9 types, according to the fact sheet and the villa pages. In the garden and on the beach: Deluxe Villa, 75 m², 49 villas with no pool; Two Bedroom Deluxe Villa, 150 m², 2 interconnecting villas for 6 adults; Beach Villa with Pool, 116 m², 30 on the beach; Deluxe Villa with Pool, 110 m², and Pool Villa, 175 m² with a butler, one of each. Over the water: Water Bungalow with Pool, 80 m², 17; Water Villa, 112 m², 24, with no pool; Water Villa with Pool, 112 m², 4; Water Suite, 270 m², just one, with a butler.

Every villa has a king bed, the Two Bedroom 2; a third guest sleeps on an extra bed, in the Deluxe Villas on one of 2 sofa beds. The Pool Villa and the Water Suite ask for at least 2 and 3 nights.

Where is it, and how quiet is the island?

In South Malé Atoll, 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana airport; the contact page gives the address as «South Male Atoll, 20-02, 02015». The address on the Google listing, 39 Orchid Magu in Malé, is a street in the capital, even though the pin sits on the island.

The island is small: guests in 2026 walk round it in 10 to 15 minutes without finding it crowded. In January 2026 a German couple wrote that even with the island full you barely notice the other guests; in April another guest pointed out many young children. In the distance, on the right side of the atoll, a May guest could see a few cranes and a shipyard. In the evenings there is music at Fen Bar, with a DJ once a week.

How do you get there from Malé, and what does the speedboat cost?

By the resort’s speedboat, 25 minutes from Velana airport, with several departures a day according to the FAQ. The site says shared transfers are arranged as part of the booking, without a price. Booking.com, read on 3 October 2026, charges for them separately: $187 per adult from 13 and $93.50 per child aged 2 to 12, or $425 each way for a private speedboat for up to 6 people, rates valid until 31 October 2026; the resort does not accept transfers arranged by others. In April 2025 one guest quoted $180 per person for the shared boat.

The Summer Soul Vacation offer, for stays of at least 3 nights between May and October 2026, includes the shared return transfer. Flight details are due 5 days ahead according to the «Our Resort» page, 72 hours ahead according to Booking.com.

Can you arrive by car or park?

No: it is an island, reached only by speedboat, as Booking.com also says. A Google review of December 2024 mentions «free parking», but no page of the resort names a car park: the only landing is the main jetty.

How do you get into the sea?

From the beaches, which run all round the island: the Beach Villas with Pool sit on them, the Deluxe Villas a few metres back in the garden. The Water Villa, the Water Villa with Pool and the Water Suite have steps into the lagoon, the Water Bungalows direct access to the sea from the deck, according to the villa pages.

The resort map warns that the lagoon is shallow in places and that there is no lifeguard on duty.

Is there a reef you can swim to?

Yes. The snorkelling page describes a house reef a few kicks from shore, with coral nurseries, clownfish, hawksbill turtles, blacktip reef sharks and rays; you go in from the beach or the water villas, with free masks and fins, and twice a week the snorkel is guided. The snorkelling guide marks the entry points, the areas of possible strong current and those closed because of boat traffic; the resident marine biologist gives a talk on Sundays, 5 to 6pm, at The Pavilion.

Between April and September 2026 guests describe a turtle seen on the house reef, stingrays and blacktip reef sharks met while snorkelling, and sharks seen from the deck of a water villa. Boat trips go out to reefs further away, with nurse sharks and, in season, manta rays.

What pools are there?

A main infinity pool looking over the beach and the ocean, according to the fact sheet, with Fen Bar and its daybeds beside it; the LIME spa has an infinity whirlpool above the lagoon. 54 of the 129 villas have a private pool: the Beach Villas with Pool, the Water Bungalows with Pool, the Water Villas with Pool, the Deluxe Villa with Pool, the Pool Villa and the Water Suite.

Are the pools heated, and when are they open?

The site gives neither heating nor temperature for the pools, and publishes no hours for the main one. Fen Bar, beside it, is open from 11am to midnight; the spa’s whirlpool is inside the spa, open from 10am to 8pm, for guests aged 14 and over. In August 2026 a family found the main pool’s water the right temperature.

Where do you eat, and until what time?

In 5 restaurants and 2 bars, according to the dining page: Vela, the international buffet with themed nights, from 7 to 10.30am and from 7 to 10pm; Turquoise, international cooking on the beach, from noon to 10pm; Sand, fish and grills on the sand or in private cabanas; Sora, Japanese with Peruvian and Maldivian touches, above the lagoon; Etesian, Mediterranean, with a tasting menu and a wine cellar. Those 3 open from 7pm to 10pm. Fen Bar runs from 11am to midnight, Chill Bar, over the lagoon, from noon to 7pm.

Private dinners on the beach, in a cabana or in the villa are ordered separately, and in-villa dining runs round the clock. In August 2026 a family noted that the à la carte restaurants must be booked in advance. According to the FAQ, water is free in the villa but not in the restaurants; further down, in an answer copied from Niva Dhigali, the same page says it is free at table too.

What meal plans are there, and what do they include?

Breakfast is included in every rate, according to the meal plan sheet of August 2026. Half board adds the buffet dinner at Vela, full board an à la carte lunch at Turquoise as well, both with house water and 30% off dinner, food only, in the à la carte restaurants. Velassaru Indulgence, from 3 nights, brings lunch and dinner in the listed bars and restaurants, 12.30 to 3.30pm and 7 to 10pm, soft drinks, cocktails and house beers, wines and spirits, masks and fins and a kayak for 2 hours a day; it leaves out starred dishes, in-villa dining, the minibar, premium brands, private dinners and themed events.

The dining page names the plans differently, Premium All Inclusive, Full Board, Half Board and Bed & Breakfast. Whatever the plan, breakfast is included in every room rate, according to the meal plan sheet, read on 15 October 2026.

What is the spa like?

It is called LIME and stands over the water: the fact sheet lists 10 treatment rooms above the lagoon, 2 for couples, an Elemis suite, a relaxation room, a manicure and pedicure room, a hydro pool over the lagoon and a steam room. The spa menu adds a terrace and a lounge and, from 6pm, the Starlight Night Spa for couples on the terrace. The products are Elemis, with Biotec 2.0 facials, Aromatherapy Associates, Obsidian for men, Cochine and Margaret Dabbs. The site publishes no floor area; Google Hotels lists a sauna, which the resort’s own sources never mention.

Is the spa included, is there a fee, and can outside guests use it?

Treatments are paid for, with service charge and GST already included according to the spa menu. The facilities, steam room and infinity whirlpool, are for guests aged 14 and over, who should arrive 40 minutes before their treatment; the menu does not say whether they can be used without booking one. With the Book Direct offer there is a 60-minute treatment per room from 3 nights, with Romance at Niva Velassaru a credit of $25 per person.

No page of the resort publishes a day pass for anyone not staying on the island.

What are the spa’s opening hours?

Every day from 10am to 8pm, according to the spa menu; the Starlight Night Spa is offered every evening from 6pm, booked 24 hours ahead and weather permitting. Bookings are made by dialling 6131 from the villa; cancel 24 hours ahead, reschedule with 6 hours’ notice.

Which treatments are there, and what do they cost?

The spa menu lists the signature massage with warm coconut-wood tools, 90 or 105 minutes; Memories of Maldives, 150 minutes for 2 with a scrub, massage, wrap and bath; Soul of the Ocean, 120 minutes; Thai and hot-stone massages, Elemis Biotec facials of 60 or 90 minutes, and Margaret Dabbs manicures and pedicures. There are 2- and 3-day journeys, of 210 and 390 minutes.

The menu prints no prices, and neither does the site.

Is it good for children?

Yes, though without a kids’ club: the PLAY Kids Club in the FAQ is Niva Dhigali’s. There are tennis sessions for children and teenagers, a children’s menu at Sand and, in the 2026 festive programme, pizza-making, nail art, origami, kite flying and a first breath underwater. The villas for 3 take 2 adults and 1 child; the Deluxe Villa takes 2, plus an infant.

On Booking.com a cot is free, an extra bed costs $88.70 a night from 2 to 11, and from 12 children pay as adults. The spa admits guests from 14. With Summer Soul Vacation, until October 2026, children under 12 stay free.

What is on the island apart from the villas?

According to the fact sheet: round-the-clock guest services and in-villa dining, laundry, free Wi-Fi, a doctor in residence, currency exchange, the Velassaru Living Gallery, a photographer, a Pilates and barre studio, a gym, a floodlit tennis court with a coach from the Sunball academy, the infinity pool, the Immersion PADI dive centre, the Glide water sports centre and a resident marine biologist. The morning cruise, 4 times a week, and sunset yoga, 3 times, are free, and so is the daily ice cream. Credit cards are accepted except Diners Club.

What offers are there?

Read on 6 October 2026: Book Direct, with a floating breakfast in the pool villas and a 60-minute spa treatment from 3 nights; Early Booker Deal, booking 14 days ahead; Long Stay Seaside Serenity, from 5 nights, with daily laundry; Romance at Niva Velassaru, from 4 nights, with tapas at Chill Bar and $25 of spa credit per person; Summer Soul Vacation, from 3 nights between May and October 2026, with the shared speedboat and children under 12 free; Festive Day, Nights That Linger for stays from 20 December 2026 to 5 January 2027.

The rates of every offer are subject to service charge and taxes; Summer Soul Vacation cannot be combined with others and is free to cancel only within 14 days of booking.

Can you get married at Niva Velassaru?

You can renew your vows, in a symbolic ceremony: the vow renewal sheet warns that it is not legally binding. It takes place on the beach at the water’s edge, with a master of ceremonies, a boduberu drum procession, a bouquet, a cake, Taittinger champagne and a certificate. The packages, valid from 1 January to 31 October 2026 with service charge and GST included, cost $1,950 a couple for Tropical, $2,900 for Deluxe, with a 30-minute photo session, and $3,900 for Premium, which adds dinner on the beach and a spa treatment for 2. For parties and private dinners the resort points to private dining and tailor-made events, without publishing capacities.

Is there a New Year’s Eve dinner?

Yes. The 2026 festive programme, published in September, has the New Year’s Eve dinner at Vela, Turquoise and Fen on 31 December from 7pm to 10pm, live music at Turquoise until 9.30pm, then a DJ on the main beach from 9pm and the «Pure Celestial» party from 9.30pm until late. On Christmas Eve dinner is served in the same 3 restaurants, and Santa arrives at the jetty on the morning of the 25th.

Neither the programme nor the festive offer gives a price for the dinner or a compulsory supplement. On Google Hotels, read on 12 October 2026, the night of 31 December cost $1,172 for 2.

Can you play golf?

No: the fact sheet lists no course and no golf packages. The island has the floodlit tennis court, the gym with Kinesis machines and the Pilates and barre studio.

When is it open, and which season is best?

All year: the site announces no closures, the offers cover the summer and the festive programme runs from 20 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. On Google Hotels, read on 3 October 2026, all 120 nights from 4 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price.

Guests describe May and July as rainy months, warm even without sun. On Google’s calendar the nights from 27 December to 7 January cost $964 to $1,016, close to twice November’s.

How much does a night cost?

Google Hotels, read on 3 October 2026, for 2 adults and one night: $508 on 16 November 2026, $477 on 1 December, $797 on the night of 24 December, $1,214 on 27 December, the calendar’s peak, $1,195 on 31 December and $595 on 12 January 2027. All 120 nights from 4 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 had a price.

These figures already include taxes and fees: for 4 October the official site, on the same listing, asked $439, and its booking link declared more than a quarter of that as tax. The calendar names no villa and no meal plan; the speedboat, on Booking.com, is charged separately.

What do the reviews say?

On 3 October 2026 Google showed 4.8/5 from 990 ratings, Tripadvisor 4.8/5 from 2,867, with a Travellers’ Choice 2026, and Booking.com 9.3/10 from 554, with value for money at 8.7. In the 500 most recent Google reviews, August 2018 to September 2026, 87% of those who mention the staff are positive, 89% of those who mention the location and 84% of those who mention the villas. Guests happy with the bill cite the short hop from the airport and the all-inclusive; others consider the cost of drinks, water in the restaurants and water sports, all charged separately.

What taxes and charges are added?

The site’s rates are quoted before them: the Early Booker Deal terms add service charge, government tax and Green Tax, and the vow renewal sheet puts the service charge at 10%; GST has been 17% since 1 July 2025 (MIRA, read on 15 October 2026). Booking.com adds a Green Tax of $12 per child per night. Google Hotels’ prices for the Maldives, on the other hand, include taxes and fees. The spa’s prices include service charge and GST; the speedboat is extra.

When can you check in, and when must you leave?

Check-in is from 2pm and check-out by noon, according to Booking.com; Google Hotels gives 11.59am. The Long Stay Seaside Serenity offer promises early check-in, subject to availability. In February 2026 a guest who arrived at 9am was given a room with a shower to wait in until her villa was ready.
