At Montreux Palace I would alternate between the lake and spa, with a night for 2 from CHF 405 on 10 February 2027. For a small hotel that feels like a private house, I would look for somewhere more intimate.

Fairmont Le Montreux Palace
  1. The Deluxe room balcony

I would choose the 30 m² Deluxe Lake View King for its balcony facing Lake Geneva and the Alps. The bathroom has a separate bath and shower; I would leave some time for the bath.

  2. March nights

From 20 to 26 March 2027 a night for 2 runs from CHF 426 to CHF 468, each taken on its own. The night of 27 July 2027 reaches CHF 3,649; I would try a few dates before settling on one.

  3. The garage beneath the gardens

If you arrive by car, self-parking in the garage beneath the gardens costs CHF 42 a night. Valet parking is CHF 48 a night; I would decide on arrival.

  4. An evening of music

I would keep Thursday or Friday free for Funky Claude’s Bar, where live bands start at 7.30pm. On Saturday the DJ begins at 10pm, so I would save the drink for after dinner.

We choose the hotels of this guide ourselves, one at a time: no one pays to be in it.

How we choose the hotels

Our reading, point by point

What we found reading the hotel’s own pages, one thing at a time.

  1. Location

Guests praise the lake views and proximity to the station; one found the uphill walk to the trains awkward with lots of luggage.

  2. Room

Guests enjoy spacious rooms and lake-facing balconies; others report tired interiors, faulty air conditioning or late-night music audible in their rooms.

  3. Staff and service

One guest recalls a miniature wedding cake for an anniversary; others describe delays and requests left unresolved.

  4. Breakfast

Guests praise the choice at breakfast and brunch; one questions whether breakfast is worth CHF 45.

  5. The bill

On Google, 17 of the 28 people discussing value for money write negatively and 10 positively. Complaints include expensive cocktails and service that falls short of the room rate.

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Fairmont Le Montreux Palace’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests praise the lake views and proximity to the station; one found the uphill walk to the trains awkward with lots of luggage.

500 guests said so on Google, from 29 September 2024 to 29 September 2026. The comments include hotel stays, brunches and spa visits. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

Price: for 2, the night of 18 July 2027, from 373 CHF on Google Hotels on 19 October 2026.

What a night costs, period by period

From 5 January to 15 May 2027 a night for 2 runs from CHF 405 to CHF 586, each taken on its own. For 16–22 May 2027 it rises to CHF 508–2,218; I would try moving the stay earlier.

How I would spend the day

Funky Claude’s Bar at Fairmont Le Montreux Palace

An evening with music

I would pick Thursday or Friday at Funky Claude’s Bar for live bands from 7.30pm. On Saturday the DJ starts at 10pm; the bar closes on Sunday.5

Fairmont Spa at Fairmont Le Montreux Palace

From pool to spa

The spa covers 2,000 m², with an indoor pool, sauna, hammam and 7 treatment rooms. The heated outdoor pool opens from late spring through summer, weather permitting.43

La Palmeraie at Fairmont Le Montreux Palace

Start at La Palmeraie

At La Palmeraie I would start with bread, Swiss cheeses and honey from the hills above Montreux. The buffet runs from 7am to 10.30am and costs CHF 45 per person when the room rate does not include it.6

Good to know before you book

  • The garage sits beneath the gardens: CHF 42 a night for self-parking, CHF 48 with valet. Electric charging costs CHF 25 per charge.14

  • With children I would keep the indoor swim for 2pm–5pm on weekdays, or 10am–noon and 2pm–5pm at weekends, always with an adult. Children cannot use the sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, fitness centre or relaxation area.43

  • La Terrasse du Petit Palais remains closed until spring 2027. For a winter dinner I would choose the Montreux Jazz Café.107

At lunch

Stop at Pureaty

Swim with the children

With children I would choose 2pm–5pm for the indoor pool, the slot available every day, always with an adult.

Sit down at Jazz Café

Other hotels to consider

The Junior Suite balcony towards the lake and Alps

Royal Plaza Montreux

Lake Geneva stretches to the Alps beyond the Junior Suite balcony. I would choose those 45 m² at Royal Plaza and leave an afternoon for the indoor pool; someone wanting more contemporary bedrooms may prefer another hotel.

The open-air pool facing the Alps

Villars Palace

In Villars you can swim outdoors in January: the Palace heats its pool to 30°C. I would book a south-facing Panorama room with a balcony and leave the forest side to others.

The Belle Époque façade facing Lake Geneva

Grand Hôtel du Lac

The 1868 Belle Époque façade looks straight out over Lake Geneva from the Vevey quay. I would book a lake-view Deluxe with a balcony facing the French Alps, and keep one evening for Emotions.

The RoyAlp chalets in the snow, from above

Chalet RoyAlp Hôtel & Spa

RoyAlp is 4 chalets of wood and stone in the Villars snow, with the slopes running to the door. I would book a mountain-view Executive with its private terrace, and leave the evening to Le Grizzly.

The lakeside façade with its awnings down

Hôtel des Trois Couronnes

Since 1842 the Trois Couronnes façade has looked out over Lake Geneva from the Vevey waterfront. I would book a Junior Suite Lake, south-facing with a sitting area, and keep an hour for the 24-metre indoor pool.

The Bellevue Suite bedroom, with the Jet d’Eau beyond the balcony door

Hôtel d’Angleterre

At the d’Angleterre I would choose the Bellevue Suite: 70 m² with a balcony on the lake, and the Jet d’Eau in the doorway. There are 45 rooms on the Quai du Mont-Blanc, and the Leopard Bar has live music 6 nights a week.

The hotel façade at dusk, its sign lit in the Old Town

Hôtel Les Armures

Les Armures is a 17th-century house one minute from St Peter’s Cathedral. Its 32 rooms share the house with Geneva’s oldest café, where the evening means a moitié-moitié fondue.

The lounge with the fire lit and the murals of the city

Hôtel de la Cigogne

At La Cigogne, on Place Longemalle, the lounge fire is lit on winter evenings beneath murals of the city. Its 49 rooms are all different, a short walk from the lake and the Old Town.

An open French window onto the balcony, with the lake and the Jet d’Eau

Beau-Rivage Genève

At the Beau-Rivage I would choose the Junior Suite Lake View Panorama: 45 m² facing the Jet d’Eau, with balconies. There are 95 rooms and suites on the Quai du Mont-Blanc, and the same family has run the house since 1865.

The Dolder Grand from the air at sunset: the turreted 1899 building between its two curved modern wings, on the wooded hillside above Zurich

The Dolder Grand

Curhaus towers above Zurich, art in the corridors and warm water facing the city.

The Belle Époque façade on Rue du Grand-Chêne: red awnings, wrought-iron balconies and the carved gable above the columned entrance porch lettered “Lausanne-Palace”, with flags; the brasserie’s green awning on the left

Lausanne Palace

Lausanne climbs behind the palace; from the right rooms, the lake appears beyond the rooftops.

Steam rising in the morning from the outdoor sports pool, with frost on the shrubs and the garden, the chalet wings with their wooden balconies on the right and rocky peaks against a clear sky on the left

ERMITAGE Wellness- & Spa-Hotel

In Schönried the brine pool runs outdoors; inside, the Stuben and cake table slow the day.
