The Old Jazz Band in the evening and the Bund outside in the morning: that’s why I’d come to the Peace. For a trip centred on Lujiazui’s offices, I’d stay in Pudong.

  1. Half an hour for its history

    Guests can join a complimentary 30-minute guided visit to the Peace Museum. Do it near the start; the next walk through the lobby will mean more.

  2. The Gold lounge

    Fairmont Gold includes a lounge with breakfast, afternoon tea and evening canapés. Gold bedrooms can face the courtyard; paying for the extra services doesn’t automatically buy a river view.

  3. Give the driver a different address

    For car arrivals and departures, use 63 Dianchi Road at the side of the hotel. Nanjing Road remains the postal address; Dianchi is the one I’d give the driver.

What the Peace Hotel is

You enter beneath a coloured-glass dome. The Peace tells a story of Shanghai through its rooms as well as its architecture: the Nine Nation Suites have distinct identities, from China and Japan to Italy, giving a reason to choose a suite beyond its size.

Dragon Phoenix serves Chinese cooking on the 8th floor. Above it, The Cathay Room pairs French food with a terrace following the building’s corner; it’s where I’d look for an evening given over to the hotel.

A 25-metre indoor pool, lit from above, offers a pause from the city. Willow Stream Spa adds treatments and places to rest, giving the stay a slower interlude while Shanghai carries on outside.
