  1. The counter has a history

    The Long Bar’s counter stretches 34 metres and belongs to the story of the 1911 Shanghai Club. Live jazz runs Wednesday to Saturday, so match the night to your plans.

  2. Pick the right entrance

    The historic building’s entrance is at 2 Zhongshan Dong Yi Road; the new wing uses 88 Sichuan Middle Road. With luggage, give the driver the address of the building you’re staying in.

  3. A swim late in the day

    The pool opens from 6am to 11pm, while the gym is available 24 hours. You can leave a swim until late rather than cutting the day short.

What Waldorf Astoria Shanghai is

An atrium links the former Shanghai Club to the newer tower on Sichuan Middle Road. The character of the accommodation changes between them: Heritage suites occupy the historic club, with contemporary bedrooms and suites in the new wing.

Peacock Alley is both a passage and a place to stop for coffee, afternoon tea or the house Red Velvet Cake. Grand Brasserie opens onto its kitchen and a green courtyard, while Wai King Kok takes dinner into the historic building’s attic.

A heated indoor pool gives the stay a different pace in the new wing. The spa is here too, with a private steam room, rain shower and changing area in each treatment room. It’s where I’d put aside a few hours for the hotel itself.
