Which villa to ask for in the Maldives

Two villas in the same category can face open sea or a neighbour’s deck. At 12 resorts, these are the numbers guests and reviewers recommend, the ones they would avoid, and the reason for each.

12 resorts, villa by villa

The first line says what to ask for, the second what to avoid.

Overwater-way.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

King Reef Villas 305 to 319, by the bridge, if you want to jump straight onto the best corals.

The trade-off

Avoid 502 to 516 if privacy comes first: these villas face the lagoon.

Why choose it

A reviewer at Johnny Africa1 sends snorkellers to the villas by the bridge, 305 to 319, and finds the south-facing 502 to 516 less private. For an overwater villa, a guest in 7162 had no outside noise at all. A guest in beach villa 6093 writes that the fence hides little from people walking the beach.

Overwater-dusk.

The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort

Beach villa 203 for snorkelling steps from the door, or overwater 509, nine villas in from the beach, for privacy.

The trade-off

Avoid Sunset Overwater Villas 542 to 544, close to the Whale Bar, and beach villas from 310 onward, where the jetty cuts the view.

Why choose it

A guest in 2035 chose it over the water for the snorkelling at the door. A guest in 5096 credits its position for the privacy. Roomer Travel7 flags 542, 543 and 544 for the Whale Bar, and a Tripadvisor8 review says that from 310 onward you look at other people’s decks from the beach.

Aerial-overall.

Six Senses Laamu

Sunset Laamu Water Villas 11 to 18, at the end of Jetty A, or Ocean Beach Villas 90 to 97 for a wide beach.

The trade-off

Sunset Laamu Water Villas 5 to 10 sit in the same category, and a regular says they are little better than entry villas 1 to 4.

Why choose it

A trip report10 calls 16 on Jetty A spectacular for its open turquoise view. On the Maldives forum11, regulars send you to Ocean Beach Villas 90 to 97, which face sunset and have no rocks or wave breakers. For coral at the deck, a guest12 recommends Laamu villas 44 and 45. The forum13 is blunt on 5 to 10.

Water-villa-sunset.

Milaidhoo Maldives

Beach villa 301, on the corner of the island, right by the coral and still water.

The trade-off

From 214 onwards the beach villas are private, but the reef is further away. Water villas near the arrival jetty see passing boats.

Why choose it

Condé Nast Traveller15 calls 301 the favourite of many guests. In the water villas, a Tripadvisor16 reviewer points to the triangular reef in front of 125. A forum17 guest explains the trade-off from 214, and Roomer Travel18 names the boats by the jetty.

The arc of overwater residences above the lagoon.

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island

Residences 2 to 8, with 8 the best for sunsets.

The trade-off

Villas 9 to 15 face Hinnavaru island and are less private.

Why choose it

With only 15 residences on the island, the choice comes down to which way you face. The Resorts Collection20 recommends 2 to 8 and marks 9 to 15 down for the neighbouring island. In 2020 a forum21 guest found 1 and 15, the only two-bedroom units, barely over the water because of sand.

Ocean Pool Villa — official bedroom photograph.

Anantara Veli Maldives Resort

Bungalows 164 to 167 over the water, or Deluxe Over Water Pool Villas 181 to 190.

The trade-off

Ocean Pool Villas 200 to 206 stand on a cliff edge. Guests disagree on 131 to 140, closest to the jetty.

Why choose it

A guest23 calls 164 to 167 exceptional spots, and another24 found 182 private, with 183 to 185 also good. Roomer Travel25 calls 131 to 140 less private, while one Tripadvisor26 guest found 131 the most private of all, so ask what you are getting.

Island-sandbank-aerial.

Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru

Beach bungalows 218 to 228, on the less windy side of the island, with more privacy.

The trade-off

One guest in beach villa 214 lost a night’s sleep to birds.

Why choose it

The room tips28 on Tripadvisor put 218 to 228 first, and for families name 103, with its own stretch of beach next to the kids’ club. The guest in 21429 adds that birds may have been nesting there that week, so treat it as one night’s report.

The overwater villas from the air, linked by a winding walkway, each with its deck and slide.

Soneva Jani

South-facing villas, the odd numbers, ideally from 91 onwards, for the best exposure and the clearest water.

The trade-off

Villa 12 faces The Gathering, the main overwater area, and 8 faces the arrival jetty.

Why choose it

The advice on odd numbers comes from a Tripadvisor31 review. Dorsia Travel32 stayed in 8 and could still see and hear the neighbours.

Island-aerial.

Soneva Fushi

A villa on the sunrise side for open ocean views. For a two-bedroom villa, 23 or higher for the better beaches.

The trade-off

Villa 19 is close to the arrival jetty, and family villa 17 had almost no beach at high tide in late February.

Why choose it

The Luxury Travel Expert34 sends you to the sunrise side for open views. The forum35 adds the advice on 23 or higher, and regulars there name 1936. The note on 1737 is one guest’s, from one February.

Island-sunset.

Alila Kothaifaru Maldives

Sunset overwater villa 217, with sun from noon through sunset, or beach villa 142 for privacy.

The trade-off

Villa 212 looks straight into the neighbouring decks and pools.

Why choose it

The notes on 21739 and 14240 come from guests who stayed there. A guest in 21241 describes the offset layout, and says it was their own villa’s experience.

Room-water-pool-villas.

Amilla Maldives

Reef Water Villas around 110 to 120, for the reef and the marine life.

The trade-off

Villa 126 sits in the line of the wind in bad weather, one forum guest found.

Why choose it

A guest43 recommends 110 to 120 for the reef and marine life. The forum44 note on 126 comes from a guest watching the wind before a stay.

Island-aerial.

Kandolhu Maldives

Beach villas 107 to 109, for more beach in front, or pool villa 103.

The trade-off

From 110 the beach narrows, and from 116 the water villas partly block the view.

Why choose it

On the forum46, a regular would have taken 107 to 109 over 110 to 112. Another47 notes that 116 and above lose part of the sea view, and a guest48 found 103 ideally placed.

Most of this advice comes from one stay, and renovations can change it.

What changes from one villa number to the next

We read guest reports, forums and reviews, and kept only advice that names a number and gives a reason.

  • The view. On a jetty, the end villas often face open water and the first ones face the island or the arrival boats.

  • The water. A villa can sit above coral or above sand, as the notes on Waldorf Astoria and Six Senses Laamu show.

  • Privacy. Curved jetties put some decks in sight of their neighbours, as a guest found in villa 212 at Alila Kothaifaru.

How to ask for a villa number

A number is a request, so put it in writing.

Write to the resort after booking, give the villa number and say why you want it: sunset, the reef or privacy. The reason helps when that exact villa is taken.

Ask for the resort’s map too. If the number is unavailable, the map shows which neighbours share the same view.

Questions about villa numbers in the Maldives

Which numbers to ask for, and how far to trust them.

Can you choose your villa number in the Maldives?

You can ask, and several guests in this guide got the villa they asked for, such as 16 on Jetty A at Six Senses Laamu10. A request is not a guarantee.

Which water villas have the best snorkelling?

At Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi1 reviewers name the reef villas by the bridge, 305 to 319. At Six Senses Laamu12 a guest recommends Laamu villas 44 and 45 for the coral by the deck.

Which Maldives villas should you avoid?

Those near an arrival jetty or a bar come up most often: Sunset Overwater Villas 542 to 5447 at The St. Regis Vommuli and villa 1232 at Soneva Jani are two examples.

How reliable is this advice?

It is one guest’s or reviewer’s experience unless we say otherwise, and guests can disagree, as they do on villa 131 at Anantara Veli25.
