Veligandu suits couples who want a small island where the reef begins at the steps of an overwater villa and a host answers on WhatsApp; from May 2027 Google showed nights for 2 from $471. With children under 12 the choice narrows to 5 of the 9 villa types, and a family after a kids’ club will be happier on neighbouring Kuramathi.

A Sunset Ocean Villa deck, with its net slung over the water.
  1. The villa to ask for

For two, an overwater pool villa: since the reopening 7 guests had the Sunset Ocean Pool Villa and 5 the Ocean Pool Villa. For the reef I would ask for the second, on the sunrise side, which 2 guests who wrote in 2026 single out.

  2. The weeks that cost less

Read on 12 October 2026, the calendar has 120 of the 129 nights from 1 May to 6 September 2027, where it stops, at $471 and the other 9 at $510. Its dearest night is Christmas Eve, $3,443; from 27 December to 5 January a night costs $1,252 to $1,384.

  3. On top of the rate

The shared seaplane: $390 per adult return and $195 for a child of 2 to 11, as Booking.com listed it on 3 October 2026. The resort makes the gala dinners of 24 and 31 December compulsory, outside the room rate.

  4. Whale sharks, on Sundays

On the resort’s weekly excursion schedule, read on 13 October 2026, whale-shark snorkelling appears once, on Sundays from 8am to 1pm: $611 a person, taxes and service included, on the price list valid to 30 November 2026, with at least 6 aboard. I would keep a Sunday for it.

What Veligandu is

Veligandu opened in 1984 with 17 coral-built rooms, a restaurant, a bar and 2 dhonis; it belongs to Crown & Champa Resorts, was called Veligandu Island Resort & Spa until March 2024 and underwent an 18-month renovation (the resort’s history). It reopened on 23 November 2024 according to Trans Maldivian Airways, which flies guests in on a seaplane painted in the resort’s colours (Trans Maldivian Airways); the group announced its return as a 5-star resort on 27 November (Crown & Champa Resorts). The MICHELIN Guide awards it one Key (MICHELIN Guide, read on 3 October 2026).

There are 100 villas: 47 Ocean Pool Villas over the water with glass floors, 28 Ocean Villas, 16 Jacuzzi Beach Villas and 9 Beach Villas (Crown & Champa Resorts). They run from the 71 m² Beach Villa to the 319 m² 2-bedroom Sunset Ocean Pool Villa with two 6.5-metre pools, and the overwater villas step down to the house reef (villas). Of the 28 Ocean Villas, the 10 Ocean Jacuzzi face the sunrise and the 18 Sunset Ocean the sunset, with a net slung over the water (Ocean Jacuzzi Villa, Sunset Ocean Villa).

Meals are taken at the Dhonveli buffet, on a sand floor with weekly theme nights; at Madivaru Silk, Mediterranean and Asian cooking on the sunset side, with teppanyaki in the same room; and at Raalhu, lobster and seafood, in the evening only (Dhonveli, Madivaru, Raalhu). Thundi Bar sits on the sandbank beside the infinity pool and stays open from 8am until the last guest leaves (Thundi Bar).

It scores 4.9 out of 5 on Google from 936 reviews, 4.9 on Tripadvisor from 5,958 with Travelers’ Choice 2026, and 9.7 on Booking.com from 137, read on 3 October 2026 (Google, Tripadvisor, Booking.com). In the 101 Google reviews with text written since the reopening, the host assigned to each villa comes up again and again, as does a reef with sharks, rays and turtles (Google).

The 5 things that matter, as guests tell them

What do Veligandu’s guests say? They write it in their reviews, even those who only came for a drink or dinner: we read every one and tell the 5 things that matter, from the location to the bill.

  1. Location

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe snorkelling straight from the villa, among sharks, rays and turtles, and the 20-minute seaplane flight from Malé.

  2. Room

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. The new overwater pool villas draw the most praise: guests describe them as modern and spacious, with the ocean view from the private pool.

  3. Staff and service

9 in 10 guests who mention it are happy with it. Guests describe the host assigned to each villa, who messages every morning and sees to restaurant and excursion bookings.

  4. Breakfast

Breakfast is the Dhonveli buffet: guests describe its range, the live cooking and the egg station.

  5. Price

When guests write about the bill, they recommend the Dine Around all-inclusive, which covers drinks and, with a booking, tables at Madivaru Silk and Raalhu.

The scores come from 101 Google reviews with text, left from 16 December 2024 to 26 September 2026. The other hotels are the ones weighed for a stay in the Maldives: for each we read its latest 500 Google reviews with text, or all of them where there are fewer, as of 6 October 2026. The score is the average of what they say, from 0 if they speak of it very badly to 10 if they speak of it very well. Where only a few mention something, the score stays close to the guide’s average: a handful of voices does not make a reputation.

The hotels we weigh it against in the Maldives:

Price: for two on the night of 1 May 2027, from $471 (seen on Google Hotels on 12 October 2026).

What a night costs, season by season

On 12 October 2026 Google showed nights for 2 from $593 before Christmas, from $815 between 6 January and 29 March 2027, and at $638 on every night from 30 March to 30 April. I would look at April: $177 a night under the lowest of those winter nights, in a month the Maldives Meteorological Service counts as the passage between the 2 monsoons, the wet south-west one normally setting in from mid-May.
